I'll be eternally grateful to Dew for 2008.

Best of luck to him in whatever he decides to do.

If Croad doesn't come up, I think we'll be looking at the youngest list in the AFL, or very close to it, again next year...interesting times.

After 12 seasons of AFL football, Stuart Dew has announced he will retire at the end of the 2009 season.

Making his debut with Port Adelaide in 1997, Dew played 180 games with the Power before initially retiring at the end of the 2006 season. After a one-year absence from the game Dew was drafted to Hawthorn in the 2007 National Draft.

The 29-year-old played 15 games in his comeback year in 2008 and 11 games this season, including his 200th game in Round 5 this year.

Dew was a key part of Hawthorn’s 2008 premiership, having reached the ultimate success for the first time with Port Adelaide in 2004. As the only member of the playing group who had previously played in a premiership, Dew bought experience, maturity and leadership to the group.

A natural reader of the play and a booming left-foot, Dew’s time at Hawthorn will always be remembered for the instrumental role he played in the Hawks grand final win.

He proved to be the game turner in the third quarter – he beat three opponents to get a handball off to Mark Williams for a goal before kicking two majors of his own in a five-minute display.

Dew has been an enormous acquisition to the Hawthorn Football Club and his effect on the youngest list in the AFL has been significant.

The 3rd quarter burst of Dew in the 2008 GF was the most charged I've been at a Hawks match since the 80's. Watching it still makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

Sad to hear but i wish him all the best in the future. Was a very good pick up by Clarko in 08 and he payed massive dividends on Grand Final day last year. Possibly the best 5-10 minutes ina Grand Final for a long time. Sad that he couldn't get his body right but he has had a great career and has a deadly left slipper.

I remember we copped a lot of flak for recruiting him in 2008, but it only took his first game for the Hawks vs Melbourne Rnd 1 to show us what he could bring to the club.

Gee, what a loss, we will really miss his experience and leadership qualities. Even at Box Hill he lead by example and did the team thing. We'll miss ya fella and thanks for everything. A little premature (albeit injuries) but you can honestly say you gave it 110%and achieved such a great deal in footy. Enjoy the green pastures of retirement once again!

Thanks for the Premiership Stewie. Great to watch in full flight (and didn't we get to see it a lot when he played with Port!!!).

Did his job, maybe we can keep him on as an assistant, maybe forward coach, or in some similar capacity

Stewie Dew is the only footballer to have made me cry twice.

Once on GF day because he was so damn bloody good.

Again today when I read this.

He was a supremely talented everyman footballer. Honestly looked like he'd jogged down from the bar on GF day, pulled on a gurnsey, and got down to business. Seldom has anyone become such a familiar part of a team's furniture in such a short amount of time.

Part of the perfect storm that won us the GF last year.

The Williams/Dew/Williams/Dew/Williams goal ranks up there with anything I've seen at the footy.

Good decision - actually good decisions, Stewy Dew and the Hawthorn footy club seem to go hand in hand.

Only very, very good players, nee great ones play over 200 games and are instrumental in 2 grand final victories.

But it is the gut busting 5 sessions a day he was completing to get himself back into shape to fulfill his commitment to our footy club that I shall remember him fondest for as a player. Those efforts were an inspiration to the playing group and in their own small way contributed to our premiership as much or more than the three goals kicked on the day.

Has there ever been a better 26 game player at Hawthorn?

Good luck to him in the future - we could do worse than look at him as a forward coach - he knows the value of booting the ball looooooooooooonnnnnnngggggg.

Such a shame that he couldn't keep the body right. He won us a flag, and for that I am forever thankful.

It really leaves a massive hole in our side now.

Eternally a part of Hawthorn folklore.

Such a short stay and such a massive impact, words cannot describe what you contributed to our great club.

I propose the "Stewart Dew Medal" for any player that rips the heart out of the opposition and puts them to bed in the "Premiership Quarter" of a Grand Final.

It would be the most exclusive club in town.
