Consistency :tearsofjoy: And after Burgess came back from the UK, he suddenly realised Aussie football players need size. Beneficiaries - Melbourne and Adelaide

Mind you, there are a lot of EPL players who could flog our players in the gym.
Basically Goodwin told him our players will have size and we are going to train full contact like we play and you can go and sit in the stands and watch and dont upset the players that you are worried about them getting injured.

I wrote up some of the things in Dr Peter Brukner and Burgo podcast back in Octobetr 2021 after Melbourne won the flag including the following.

At 47 minute mark Burgo talks about Goodwin at the start of the preseason said that they will do heavy physical contact work at training and he didn't care if they got injuries and told doctors and HP team to stay away 60m+ and not spook players with their concerns. Said 70% of their injuries were as a result of contact injuries in training.

I wonder which one of our injured players will come back 2-3kg heavier?

oh boy dunk GIF

At least Chadbro has called the fitness out

Cornes on playing out the second half

“We’ve looked really hard into it, especially the strength and conditioning staff; they’ve really delved into why that might be. It's not good enough, we need to be better in the second half of games. Like I said, we've had a really good week of training that's been physical and really intense, and the energy has been as good as it's been all year. I feel like the boys are ready to produce a better performance than what we've shown over the last month.”

I was watching highlights from one of the games in 2023, we looked visibly fitter and the players were more ripped. Could consecutive years in the top 4 with limited preseason have effected our fitness levels?
Whilst i'm sure it makes some difference, many other teams are in the same position and don't seem to be impacted. Geelong is a good example.

Sure can.

Early start to the season and longer season also impacts.

We also had high rates of off season surgery and injury, which further impacts things.

The older, more mature players and teams do better across the year. Every year, younger players struggle in the second half of the year and younger teams fall in a heap.

And travel also has to be factored in. Victorian clubs only leave the state 3-5 times a year. A mature team like Brisbane or WC and GWS from a few years ago, can manage this. Young interstate sides battle.

Hawthorn, Geelong, Sydney etc all had down years which typically coincided with shortened preseasons, more injuries, harder schedules.

Gotta go

Players are too unfit

Players are too small

Players are always injured

I imagine if there is a global KPI for fitness coaches, he is failing most of them
Really?

With one or two on the bench for 3 quarters we basically held even against the reigning premiers.

Two of the injuries were contact.

I don't think our fitness is the issue this point of the season. Definitely early it was. Our players physique are improving, it's our skills that are hugely a let down.
It was a huge issue for about 10 rounds though, which is sackable.

Fitness isn't what cost us today, but the number of hamstrings we've done in recent times is concerning and a function of the high performance team...

Liked because I agree skills are the first priority. But better strength and fitness will allow us to execute skills properly under actual and perceived pressure and fatigue. To me they go hand-in-hand. Our guys looked incapable of matching Brisbane’s spread and run when they broke forward of centre: Sinn looked exhausted chasing Bailey for his first goal from stoppage. Burgoyne and Horne-Francis also looked gassed and had games where they couldn’t impact defensively because their opponents looked fitter. We all know there’s an issue with our strength in tackles too.

Could you imagine a Port player looking like this in his second year on the list? Maybe George was a big guy to begin with but still...
