News Suns to ask for Pick 1 as a priority pick

If they want picks 1&2, they need to hope and pray Melbourne finish below Carlton. The rest of the AFL may have sympathy if Adelaide don't get Anderson due to a priority pick and campaign against priority pick 1, but I can't see the same outcry in favour of Melbourne, given Melbourne have a strong roster and simply had a bad year, and Melbourne were the most recent club to benefit from a priority pick to begin the draft.

I say give them PP 1 giving them picks 1 and 2. I think they've sorted out their off field stuff. They have a decent, experienced coaching group, the AFL have planted Mark Evans up there, they have elite facilities now and Dew and Co. appear to be developing a strong culture off field. I think they should get a PP on the basis that over the years they've lost a lot of talent to the go home factor including getting little return on investment on some high draft picks e.g. Scrimshaw. If there was any year to give the Suns a PP it is this year as it will give them the two best prospects in Rowell and Anderson who are best mates which should reduce the go home factor like McCluggage/Berry with us and they are also elite midfield prospects which the Suns are crying out for.

With the operations off field stabilising and a solid culture building, Dew will have plenty to work with with a young core of Lukosius, Rankine, Ainsworth, Bowes, King, Rowell, and Anderson supported by experienced leaders such as Swallow, Witts, Harbrow, Thompson and some super handy role players like Sexton, Weller and Collins. That's the nucleus of a decent young team with all the right pieces in place starting to build. They could expect another couple of bottom 4 finishes in 2020/2021 but after that if they can keep their young core together they should be able to start to move up the ladder and attract some decent recruits from opposition clubs.

I tend to think the Suns should be given a COLA for around 5 (ish) years to try keep their young stars intact. Rankine re-signing is a great start, but they a group of at least 5-6 young guns growing together long term in order to become successful.

Stewie Dew probably gets one more year to try turn things around, but he might be in strife if they get flogged in all of their 5 remaining games.

I'd expect the inverse - the industry would and should be more concerned at a poor club (blip as it may be) being pushed out of a top pick than a good one who traded well.

I hope they get pick 1 and 2 because Melbourne don’t deserve it

Can't possibly get a first round priority pick. Throws the integrity of the league off. They will probably get a pick at the start of the 2nd round which they can trade for mature bodies.

They have three talented kids who dominated against us in the neafl, give the suns them as zone selections before the draft instead of the pp

What on earth will that do to help them? All of them will be matched anyway, picked outside the top 25 and will only cost a couple of low picks.

Look who for played for GWS in NEAFL VS GCS. Basically a NAB league team with a few 19- 20 years old AFL listed players and B rookie.
Players on your afl list that played against GCS.
Sproule, Caldwell, Shipley, sheriden, Idun, K Briggs, B-rookie Irish Brown and the other all from NAB league.

lols, it was basically Gold Coasts academy versus GWS’s academy, with a few over agers and listed players thrown in.

We are just starting to get the injury till they have all season. Just saw their neafl stats , they have had 39 different goal kickers this season and only 5 have kicked over 10 Nutting , Corbett, Day, Gore and King. God knows how many players they have fielded this year.

1 idea to help inject some depth and leadership into the Suns could be to revive the old veterans list for them

6 players on top of their list in a player/coach type roll with the AFL putting them through their coaching qualifications while still being eligible for selection in games might be an attractive end of career option for older players who still have a bit in the tank and are looking to get into coaching post career while it gives the Suns options to help them out when they get injuries and doesn't eat up list spots they need for development

Perhaps the cost could even be reduced a bit by allowing the established clubs to apply to move older players on to it to get the veterans contract off their salary cap but they still pay out the contract

Don't mind it, but those veteran need to play AFL games and not sitting in rehab, if not it could turn GCS into veteran retirement and rehab centre.

Well any idea sinks or swims on the people who are turning it into reality , don't forget you still have an entire list of younger players to get games into and the value of these guys would be mostly in the extra coaching and leadership so I think the way to go would be to have them focus on learning the ropes with the coaching during preseason and early in the year and give them a nice slow build up to help out if needed during the second half of the year

Ideally they don't play many games at all and their value comes out in other areas by GC playing competitive footy without them

I think the general consensus around the traps is the Suns will get picks 1 and 2. Quite frankly I can live with Melbourne being pushed down the draft order, they made a prelim final last year and seems absurd they are in line for pick 2 this year.

Is it still absurd that we made the Prelim last year and have pick 3 in the draft?

Yeah. It's inevitable they should (and will) get one.

I think they qualify for the Unique Circumstances to receive one, even if admittedly a lot of it it self-inflicted
