1pm for me, knock off work early then straight to the cinemas. Cant wait.

Awesome. A long term thing of mine for a decade or so is to book the day off when I see the release date announced. And then book opening session for opening day. I’m wired that way haha. So here we go, it’s almost time. Enjoy mate!

No spoilers here.

Superman is a glorious entry into the new DCU. A brilliant blend of the best of All Star Superman and Birthright. Was so pleased when Gunn referenced these as comics he was drawing upon as Grant Morrison’s fingerprints are all over this.

Gunn nailed it. It’s hopeful. Inspiring. Action packed yet heavy with emotion when it needed to be. Some genuine moments where I felt all the feels.

He sets it up from the opening and the fusion of characters just works. There was a concern that there would too much going on with all do the characters however I wasn’t too worried about that myself. I loved it. Took me back to the great DC stories rich in detail of a gallery of characters. They dovetail in and out nicely and don’t take away from the core of the film, Clark’s desire to do better.

Mr Terrific had a moment to shine with his one shot fight scene. Some genuine cheers in the cinema I was in which was sharing packed for a Thursday morning.

Gunn aimed high with his references to the current geopolitical climate and good on him for doing so. Corenswet was outstanding and he and Brosnahan have real chemistry. Excellent casting choices. Hoult was frighteningly good with his take on Luther.

Nitpicks? For sure. But that can wait. Because I’m riding too damn high at the moment. Upon leaving the cinema I’ve already bought tickets to come back this evening with my sons. Can’t wait. If this is the direction of the new DCU under Gunn and Safran, then yep, I’m in.

Just got back from watching it:

- Most comic book feeling superhero movie I've watched in a long time.

- Gunn is a master but it felt like he could've gone a bit harder here.

- Enjoyed that the movie basically kicks straight into gear and there's no origin story.

- I will say I much preferred Guardians of the Galaxy 3 - but a solid start at DC for Gunn.

7.5/10

Yeah 7.5 for me too. Had a lot of fun. Not perfect, but really enjoyable nonetheless. Hard when the bar for all superhero movies is set by the same character.

Was wrong about having Krypto and casting Hoult, both were fantastic.

Mr Terrific and Metamorpho surprised me and were great.

Loved the Will Reeve cameo. Was a really nice touch. And playing a reporter too which ironically he is in real life. Someone cut onions in that scene.

Loved the emphasis on Lex's jealousy of Superman which is a core part of his character.

Even though more detail here are on minor quibbles. Nothing majorly bad but things that if changed would have enhanced the movie. Pretty much agree with glenferry above and have the same takeaways from the movie.

Wish the story had more time to breathe, really hits the ground running. Don't think we needed to retread origins at all, but digging deeper on Clark and Lex would have been good. Movie starts off with a lot of assumed knowledge.

Story isn't overcrowded but the amount of characters was smidge too much, would have preferred cutting down to give more time to others.

Kents miscast IMO, cast and treated very much background characters. Considering how well Lois, Clark and co have been cast. Cant argue too much though.

While Mr Terrific was great, he's ship was probably overdoing it, the amount of special effects and things like the pocket dimension are great but should be saved for later on in the saga or team up film.

Potentially ambiguous translation of Jor El and Lara's 2nd half of the message...not sure if this storyline has been touched on in the comics?

Really minor - I know Peacemaker is part of the DCU, and the DCEU parts have been retroactively booted, but I've still got a bad taste in my mouth about not doing a full reboot and still letting them be part of DCU. Wish he held off on the cameo.

Overall, promising start for DCU.

Mate you may have your franchises mixed up, it’s Mister Terrific haha (Mr Fantastic is about a fortnight away) ;) :D

Seen it twice now so have a much better feel. And second viewing does validate my initial thoughts that a few things were just a bit too off for my liking. They’re minor overall however I wish Gunn made a couple of tweaks.

The film moves at a pretty rapid pace and I felt a longer running time was needed given everything Gunn is trying to cram in. I loved that the interview scene was so early, within the opening 20 minutes really, and I thought it set an excellent baseline of their relationship.

From there however there were significant chunks of time where he and Lois are not on screen together. Too long for me. One of the highlights of the movie was just when the two of them were conversing. The subtle but powerful shift between his Clark voice and Superman voice, it left me wanting more of that. Also felt the investigative work by Olsen should’ve been done by Lois instead.

I was also hoping for a an absolute all out scene of Superman at his maximum power. Cut loose and unleashed. It was kinda teased throughout, his power levels not quite at full whilst he’s recovering/recuperating etc. The 2 on 1 with Ultraman and Engineer I was certain would be it, just go for it. But it didn’t quite happen unfortunately.

The best fight scene was given instead to Mister Terrific. And as much as I thought that scene was great, it should’ve been Superman too had his bad ass moment.

Ma and Pa Kent were under utilised, I was hoping for more. And I can’t say I was a fan of the Jor El and Lara reveal. Birthright touched on manipulation of Kryptonian technology by Luthorcorp so I was hoping it would be come out that Lex had manipulated that dialogue, even if it was in the post credits for example.

As for Cena, yes I had a feeling Peacemaker would cameo. It’s a bit odd and hard to explain how it all works, I get the sense Gunn is making it up as he goes along with that kind of thing. As clearly the previous DCEU was not this universe, where metahumans have been a thing for 300 years.

FMD what a dill haha. Brain is cooked, fried and mashed from work this morning. Heavy duty coding and system work wasn't the best prep before seeing the movie haha. Of all the characters, would think I wouldn't get his name wrong lol.

Agree with everything you've said there in the spoiler tags.

RB really nailed Lois. Very Kidder like when she asked if they could do the interview there and then.

Also great pickup with shifts in Clark and Superman's voice.

Still a great story I wonder if the same story being told would have been more effective over a 6 episode arc, the big pieces get more breathing room and have more time to flesh out some of the characters. Would never happen for obvious reasons. Fan of less is more in terms of the amount of characters when it comes to solo character films. Civil War was a pseudo (but great) Avengers film.

Hall of Justice needed a bigger reveal too IMO.

Yes great point, Hall Of Justice is a very significant thing in its own right. It just kind of happened didn’t it.

Brosnahan was excellent and I maintain that interview scene was brilliant, they both nailed it. Would’ve loved to have seen them interview again at the end of the film, that’s where I felt longer running time would’ve been so beneficial. The film breezed through and I didnt want it to end when it did.

Personally I could’ve done without the dimensional tear threatening to destroy Metropolis (my mind went baxk to the excessive destruction in Man Of Steel), but that’s a minor thing. The swelling up of the music when the two young children raised his flag in Jarhanpur was amazing for me, would’ve loved the image of Superman arriving in that moment too.

I used to do the midnight screenings for the Star Wars movies with a mate. Was good fun.
Unfortunately won't get to this until the weekend, so need to avoid spoilers... what am I doing here!?!

Same, used to really enjoy going as a group to those midnight premieres. Those were the days. Could just bounce back the next morning and get to uni/work. Not anymore haha.

Don’t worry am not here to spoil anything, we’ve been using spoiler tags, which I imagine should be a thing for at least the first week or so. Enjoy the film!

Saw it at 9pm last night, packed cinema and an awesome crowd - no chatting or phones or anything.
I loved it. Thought the casting was absolutely on point. Like that's just straight up Superman, Lois and Lex.
You could make an argument that it's a bit overstuffed, but I don't reckon anyone who's ever watched a full arc of Justice League episodes in one sitting will have an issue with that.

It was a great time at the cinema and there were some genuinely warm moments. Good start. Agree there was probably 20 minutes on the floor that needed to flesh it out a little more but didn't feel it was too crowded, more lived in.

I never read the comics but I assume that was closer to the comics?

It was good but wouldn’t say it lands in a top 5 comic book movie for me.

Some notes from me:

  • prefer Cavill by a long way.
  • prefer the Man of Steel suit. This one just looks comically average to me.
  • Hoult was absolutely incredible as Lex. Loved that performance.
  • over the top campy/cheesy for me. Prefer the dark/serious vibe.
  • Mr Terrific was awesome. Great role.

There are different variations of Superman comic book adaptions. The classic and the there are even ones for Man of Steel. Gunn has made a movie focusing on the classic version that resonates with most viewers.

Man of Steel yes it did draw upon elements from the comics, it also took some liberties in its reinterpretation. Largely led by Snyder who wanted to deconstruct the character, which came at the expense of the usual hopeful, lighter hearted tone.

I liked Man Of Steel, the opening Krypton sequence was glorious, Hans Zimmer’s score is epic and the oil rig scene always gets me. The final hour and the deviations Snyder took were my main issues. The killing of Zod is contentious however the mindless destruction of buildings etc in Metropolis is something not associated or identified with a comic accurate Superman.
