Matty Maguire

Matty Maguie, as has been talked about on some of the other threads, may really struggle to find a spot in the Saints team as his ijuries have set him back so badly. At 25, would he be an ideal target for us, possibly top reinvent him as a forward, where he he has been playing some of his foooty in the VFL with some success? I'd definitely consider him. His injuries would have decreased his value to a 3rd rounder i reckon.

Thoughts?

Re: Matty Maguire

Hall and Maguire in the forward line would be interesting to say the least.

Only if he came real cheap.

Re: Matty Maguire

3rd round pick in this years draft will be practically useless. Worth a look IMO. Get Bazza to sit in on his contract negotiation too:thumbsu:

Re: Matty Maguire

He was a big Sydney Swans supporter before he was drafted by the Aints although it has probably rubbed off by now.

Re: Matty Maguire

depends on the club's position, on whether to persist with the notion of never bottoming out

his market value is probably a 3rd round pick.... so if we do decide to pick him up, we should try and get him at a 4th round offer

haha yer Hall and Maguire in the same team would be hilarious, that is if Hall continues on next year, I'd have Matt in trhe Sydney team

Re: Matty Maguire

Forget playing him forward, play him in defence like he's used to and release Grundy forward. A backline of Bolton, Maguire and LRT with Richards floating loose would be pretty solid.

That does actually sound like a very impressive backline all of a sudden doesn't it? And it's a backline that would play together for quite a few years yet.

Bevan Bolton Maguire
Shaw LRT Richards

Yep. A third genuinely solid defender is what we've been seriously lacking, and this has messed with our structure. Teddy fills that role in a pinch, as can Grundy, but neither are really cut out for it long term. Grundy needs to be developed forward, as defensively he's capable without adding much, Richards isn't big and strong enough to rely on him consistently to shut down an opponent, and plays his best footy (which is pretty damn good) as a loose man. Having Maguire and LRT gives us protection against teams with a dominant small forward, like Geelong with Steve Johnson, as Craig Bolton is then allowed to take the small while LRT and Maguire can take the two tall forwards (in Geelong's case, Mooney and Hawkins), and Richards is allowed to roam loose. I have said in the past that White should be thrown into defence for this reason, but getting Maguire would achieve the same thing structurally.

Re: Matty Maguire

there's no market value in goose, so if he was to leave, it would be of his own volition, or he's been pushed out

on the premise that he is pushed out, it means dempster is currently rated higher than goose, i am not completly sold on that theory

possible chance dempster is back on the trade table

I completely agree. The past 2 seasons it's really been the teams with, as you have put it.. small dominant forwards that have troubled us... Collingwood, Bulldogs etc. We don't seem to have a problem shutting down the Franklins, Tredreas, Browns etc but the likes of Medhurst, Johnson, Didak seem to tear us to shreds.

Re: Matty Maguire

The other benefit of drafting Maguire would be giving Henry Playfair some company in rehab.

Travis Cloke

SO there's still Swans fans who believe we have to chase a big-name forward? Okay, well, Travis Cloke fits the bill in so many ways.

Firstly, on-field: he's big, strong, has great stamina, super hands (when in form and confident), and he's young.

Two years ago he won C'wood's B&F and was ranked with Franklin as one of the next "elite" forwards of the competition.

He's had problems on and off the field, although not in terms of personal discipline, and this is where Sydney might be an attractive proposition.

Lifestyle-wise, Cloke might want out of Melbourne after the hassles he and his family have been through. The Cloke family name no longer has the same traditional ties to the Pies, and father David might even be happy to see Travis get out of Melbourne.

And the Swans have a great record with unsettled former Magpie players.

There's also the pressure on Cloke from within the Collingwood ranks, from emerging forwards such as Chris Dawes (potential superstar), Ben Reid et al.

I remember his efforts in lifting C'wood over the line against the Weagles in that semi-final in Perth, and I seriously rate Cloke anyway.

(And if we can't chase him, why not chase Dawes, who seems to be struggling to get back into Malthouse's good books.) (Have I said it before? Dawes is a dead-set superstar in the making.)

With Cloke as the CHF, it would help allow White and Johnston to develop, and with Goodes to get to the forwards sooner or later, and maybe even Grundy getting to play where he should be playing, and Veszpremi crumbing, I dunno, it could be a whole lot worse.

Re: Travis Cloke

i say invest in our own talent

collingwood would ask for more than we should be ready to pay for the forward

realistically if we are to chase forwards... guys like tim boyle would be in our purchase price
