THE SYDNEY Swans have signed their third Irish recruit with County Tyrone’s Kyle Coney set to land in November to commence training.
Coney joins countrymen Tadhg Kennelly and rookie Brendan Murphy at the club, after Swans player personnel manager Stuart Maxfield travelled to Ireland to secure the 18-year-old's signature.
And Maxfield is delighted with the new acquisition.
"Kyle is a player that we saw in a game for Tyrone (his home county)," he said. "His athleticism and his talent really stood out, so we met with him and his family and we were able to come to an agreement.
"He's accepted a two-year international rookie contract with us."
The Ardboe clubman has been in fine form for his county’s under-18 team, winners of the Ulster Championship and now set to contest the All-Ireland quarter-final.
Maxfield said the teenager, just under 190cm, has all the attributes of a successful AFL convert.
"He’s got exceptional pace for his size so we expect him to be a midfield player or a rebounding half-back flanker," he said.
"He plays as a midfielder and a forward in the Gaelic game so he certainly possesses those athletic attributes."
Maxfield added that Kennelly, a member of the 2005 premiership side, and Murphy are delighted to have another Gaelic footballer join the club.
"They’re more than happy to have a fellow countryman come over and come on board," he said.
"Tadhg Kennelly is almost the blueprint for international players coming over for development programs and the success of those so far gives Kyle Coney an excellent opportunity."

I dont know if theres already been a thread about it but I just read this now so I though I'd post it. It'll be interesting to see how he plays and wheather he can bring something new for the swans.

yeah, this is exciting and shows just what influence kennelly has, and how he might be able use it to the club's loing-term benefit in future
right now, though, i'm just really keen to see brendan murphy as soon as possible (next year, i guess)
there's huge reports about him

i wonder when kennely retires if he will go home to ireland and be a recruiting manager for sydney or another club in some form?
he could be used well as a promotional person who could talk to kids and especially their families. as many parents would be wary of their kid going overseas to play a foregin game, his personal experiences could hopefully win over a few more recruits.

Kennelly has spoken himself about wishing to be an Irish Ambassador between the two codes.

Congrats to Kyle hope he makes it.

Ahhh, another midfielder/halfback flanker.....

yeah probs will be a kpp forward
its been foward foward ruck ruck ruck IIRC. were due a forward.
fev is off the table, no chance brown, lynch is signed. maybe like someone said in another post boyle but i dont think hes high profile enough. could say roughie but not mean enough.
fev was the last bad behaved foward were pout of luck.

just means we dont need to draft anyone else. can just trade our picks for a ruckman

Ok this is something id like to know more about, who is out there that we can go for thats a KPP that is young and looks promising?
I dont like the idea of trading early picks as much as anyone else, but at this stage of the AFL evolution we need to be very cautious of how we use our draft picks.
Robbie summed it up well last nite, that we dont have much to offer other clubs. Unless we get rid of our best players we shouldnt expect to get much in return.

surely we're past that point as a club where we have to draft a HIGH-PROFILE player, forward, mid or back ... if boyle is there, chase him

surely we're now mature enough as a club and a group of supporters that we can just get the best player available, rather than the most marketable player
i'd feel ashamed and embarrassed if the club still believed we needed such a player to draw fans
we HAVE fans
we also have good kids in development as key forwards (jesse white), rucks (currie, orreal), and key backs (murphy, by all reports, and faulks)

Yes. Kennelly is signed on until the end of the 2009 season.
thanx:)

Link Meanwhile airlines around the world are reported to be not doing so well, but AFL clubs are doing their part to keep the numbers up. Hoganstand reports that Christopher McKaigue is the latest Irishman to head downunder for a trial. The Derry Lad is believed to be in Australia for a trial with the Sydney Swans. It could be an interesting scene for him if he is at the SCG today where the Peres Peace team, consisting of Israeli and Palestinians are being hosted by the Swans.

Anyone seen McKaigue yet?

I am worried about this, our potato crop could be in jeopardy?

Sure we have kipflers, but our king edwards could be decimated.

AUSSIE bound teenage Tyrone sensation Kyle Coney is refusing to be side-tracked by the whole furore over his move 'Down Under' as he sets his sights solely on the upcoming All-Ireland Minor Championship Final.

The 18-year old Ardboe scoring ace takes up a contract with Australian Rules outfit Sydney Swans shortly after the Croke Park showdown with Mayo, a decision which has reopened a war of words between some high-profile GAA figures (including Red Hands seniors boss Mickey Harte) and AFL recruitment coaches.

I can't believe that he's going, a massive sensation. If he'll be half as good a Aussie Rules player as he is football then. It'd make any Tyrone fan sick in the stomach to think that he's leaving.
He's last game will be the All Ireland final this Sunday before Tyrone senior team plays..(UP TYRONE)..should be great games. But good luck to the lad and all but, what a loss for Tyrone. He's a smashing player, one of the ones for the future. Pity.
