Don’t agree with you on this one caesar88

The evidence is stacking up & when even Paul Roos is saying it, there’s a bit of credibility behind the theory.
Except we lost on the weekend due to inaccuracy and poor defensive structure.

What evidence?

We made a GF in 2022 with unremarkable contributions from Heeney & Warner during the stretch that actually got us to the GF.

We had our best form in 2023 when Warner was out injured and Heeney was in the worst form of his career.

In our only two wins this year, the only time either Heeney or Warner got coaches votes was Warner against Freo.

As for Roos' comments, they make no sense. We need to go back to basics and apply better defensive intent. Well no disrespect to Warner but he is a liability when it comes to the basics and defensive intent, so I feel like Roos has the bones of a good point but no idea how to present it without just resorting to the same crap I could get from David King's laptop.

We can’t just blame injuries but seriously if you line up the names missing, missed most weeks etc and took the equivalent out of any team I bet they would also struggle.

But being reliant on those players means we're crap! /s

The problem is not the form of our top line players (it’s not helping) and it’s not solely down to injuries. While exposing players like Hanily, Corey Warner and the like to roles that they aren’t yet ready for yet is not something that would be expected, they aren’t underperforming.

It’s the output from our mid tier leverage of players made up from the likes of Hayward, Florent, Lloyd, Roberts which is hurting us the most and is not helping in shouldering the burden of those missing which is then further exacerbated when the likes of Blakey and Warner are not at their best.

Get improvement from our middle tier and that’s where we will see big improvements.

Last year we won several games off the back of Heeney, Chad and Gulden. Heeney in particular single handedly dragged us across the line in multiple games and Chad had some critical 4th quarters down the stretch of the season.

Roos specifically called out going back to basics and defensive intent before he even mentioned Heeney or Warner so he's covered that as well.

'22 and '23 are ancient history and not what Roos was referring to. Last year our 3 gun mids were our barometer which was clear as day to anyone who watched our games.

Strange that that's the only year Caesar didn't include in his analysis. :p

Wish we could trust Chad to mind an opponent because the ploy of getting an out of form midfielder to run with a star opponent would be a great move right now. See Jack Viney on Caleb Serong last Saturday. But I have little faith that Chad would stick to the job of running with Noah Anderson, for example, this weekend.

No one single-handedly drags a team across the line. It doesn't work that way. As demonstrated in Gather Round when Heeney was brilliant but we lost, or Opening Round when Warner was brilliant but we lost. Or the many games in 2023 where Gulden was Herculean but we lost.

It is always a team thing. If our defence wasn't strong and doing their jobs last year, then we'd have basically been pretenders like Adelaide in recent years - capable of kicking huge scores but losing a lot of high-scoring shootouts. If Rowbottom wasn't elite in his role then the trio you speak of are probably not winning All Australians but instead being torn to shreds by Cornes & King on the weekly footy programs for only playing one way, a la Essendon's mids. If our talls weren't being as competitive as they were in the first half of last year, then the amount of supply they'd have had wouldn't have made a difference to producing a winning score. If McInerney was not also one of the best kicks inside 50 in the comp, then it probably becomes that much easier for teams to nullify Gulden and kill our clean entries. If Blakey & co were not so instrumental in rebounding from the defensive 50, then there's no way Gulden & Warner could've still made us such a potent ball movement team by themselves. If Grundy was not so competitive in the ruck contests, then we likely have an entirely different set-up that doesn't even favour your mentioned trio.

And that's to say nothing of the defensive roles that the likes of Cunningham had on the competition's best small forwards, or Jordon had on the competition's best half backs and flankers. These roles go unrecognised when successful, because if not successful then they can change the dynamics of a game that might not be in our favour.
