I think the Swedes are on top in the world when it comes to music right now.

They aren't scared of prog rock.

Some great Swede prog bands are;

Unifaun-if you're into Genesis, you will love this band.

Black Bonzo-like a rocked up Yes.

Anglagard-Very Crimson like but with a bit more rock guitar.

Anekdoten-another Crimson styled band but much heavier sound.

And if you're into post rock, this band tops em all Cult Of Luna.

P.S. we should do Canada because they have some fine bands too.
PROG RULES OK!!!

PPS the guitarist in my band is in another band doing Police songs at the Khyats Hotel in Brighton 25 Wilson St I believe Saturday night..

He is very good so I'm assuming this band will be very good.

It's name?Lasagna Pinata.

My band The Darling Buds are playing at Revolver this Tuesday.:D

I know its not particularly your go smasha, and this is probably supposed to be a prog thread but the Swedes are among the best exponents of metal too :thumbsu:

Look no further than Meshuggah.

I am big on CoL too.

In general Scandinavia is a hotbed of musical awesomeness.

Meshuggah I respect! but listen in small doses.

Forgot about a punkish band The Refused who are sadly no longer around.

If you like the King Crimson album Red,look into Anekdoten.

Awesome band and one I think metal heads could get into.

Wholeheartedly agree on the whole Swedish domination.

The Hellacopters.
The Nomads.
Anglagard.
The Hives

Not to mention some other awesome members of the Scandinavian rock brotherhood from Norway.

Gluecifer
Turbonegro
Madrugada

Runemagick
Burst
Dark Tranquillity
The Knife
Katatonia
In Flames
Opeth

Could go on forever really, and not even touch the pop stuff like Jens Lekman

Heaps of ambient/dark ambient, such as Atrium Carceri and Raison D'etre

I thought it was pretty much common knowledge amongst music lovers that Sweden is king

Amazing record from Sweden IMO:

Arch Enemy
In Flames
At The Gates
The Haunted
Entombed
Dark Tranquillity
Dismember
Meshuggah
Amon Amarth
Opeth
Bathory
Bloodbath
Katatonia

When discussing Swedish music I'm suprised no one has mentioned The Soundtrack Of Our Lives (TSOOL) - one of the best bands I have ever seen...

That first clip sounds like a poor imitation of 'My Sharona'.

The second one is straight out of the Keith Richards "How to Write Riffs' handbook.

And for god sake, will some slap that clown in the red jumpsuit, he did nothing but blow kisses to the audience, might be time to tell him that he has an instrument to play.

And that lead singer is a big fat heap of sh!t, he makes me look like a matchstick, no wonder he is wearing the Demis Roussos wardrobe.

Love Meshugah so much. Though it's an all out metal assault, the technicality of what they do is mind boggling. At their concert in October all i could do was stand in amazement of their playing. Their drummer was faultless, often playing 2 or 3 compeltely different time signatures in 30 seconds.

Amazing.

...Who evolved out of the band most criminally overlooked whenever these lists are compiled, Union Carbide Productions.

From 1987's 'In The Air Tonight' - Cartoon Animal

Khoma would be one of my favourites....

http://www.myspace.com/khoma

If you haven't heard them before, listen to more than one song on their myspace as they are pretty varied. They have members from Cult of Luna, Refused and other bands, but list who they sound like as Radiohead, Muse, Mew, Sigur Ros, Kashmir. The Second Wave album is one of my favourite albums and well worth checking out I reckon.

I was just thinking about these guys when I saw this thread as well. A criminally unrated band. Hopefully they do another album pronto

Put me down as a huge fan of TSOOL. Great combination of 60s rock (Love, The Who, The Stones) with some Detroit muscle ala the Stooges thrown in. And as Finbarr notes Union Carbide Productions were an incredible band. In the Air Tonight is one of my fave albums of the 80s - easily top personal top five.
