Is it not also possible that SF may develop its own resistance to Tamiflu through overuse?

Yes, the current use of Tamiflu blankets is ridiculous and this is quite likely.

Also quite possible it will mix with current Tamiflu resistant seasonal flu. People can get two flus at once, and a new mixed flu can result.

A concern that has not received much media is that swine flu may have spread to Egypt which is having a lot of problems with human infection with H5N1 bird flu.

A mix of those two, with the infectious ability of swine flu and the killing power of bird flu would be really nasty.

Given my previous comments on the media and panic, it will probably not surprise you to read that I am not too unhappy that the media have not appeared to have cottoned on to this risk.

Good to see people absolutely r*ped for swine flu tests and tamiflu, read in the sun this morning $99 for a test if you havent been overseas, $65 for Tamiflu! Alot of people will struggle with that.

This is a joke, i saw a lady with a mask on at Flinders Street this morning!!Get a grip this is at the moment a mild flu, nobody in Australia has died yet! 10 people outside of Mexico have died out of 10,000(confirmed) probably thousands more have had it and survived, all 10 had pre existing conditions. People die from the flu every year, the hysteria is shameful. The governement is trying to re coup the cost of the stockpile of Tamiflu it has by shoving this shit down our throats and making people worried for something that as it stands is no worse than seasonal influenza. They are trying to re coup some lost revenue on this Tamiflu stockpile. The medical fraternity is laughing all the way to the bank! If they were serious about curbing this "deadly pandemic" tests would be free and medications fully tax deductible at the very least! But no both are top dollar.

Shame on the government, shame on the media, yet another mind control test.

North Korea and the US are about to nuke the shit out of half the world and we're shitting ourselves over a small case of the flu!

Soft. It will get nastier later in the year and next year, but otherwise you'll feel like you've got seasonal flu + vomiting and diarrhea.

Swine Flu, although almost harmless now, is going to get 'nastier' later in the year?

Re Tamiflu, it is quite possible that here swine flu will get mixed up with Tamiflu resistant seasonal flu, and the resultant mutant flu will be Tamiflu resistant.

Wait - the Swine Flu will mix with our regular flu to produce a killer, tamiflu-resistant 'mutant flu'?

:eek::eek:

Come on DR, this is getting beyond a joke now. You need some help.

I like everything you said up until the last sentence, which is essentially just the same 'end of the world' fear-mongering but wrapped up in nuclear packaging rather than 'swine flu' packaging.

All the scenarios that DR has mentioned are possibilities. In my opinion, his failure is giving this information absent any information about the probability of any or all of these scenarios coming to fruit.

You need to do some reading. Also don't misquote me "could" or "possibly" doesn't equal your "will"

Since I'm about to head off to Canberra soon, perhaps someone else can do a simple Google search.

Brief reply from what I've read:

Chances of current swine flu mutating in some way: quite likely (doesn't mean it will necessarily be worse). It's genetically unstable IIRC. For the sceptics here, this is their greatest concern ie greater number of infections/spread -> greater virus replication -> higher chance of mutation/change. This is what happened in 1918 and 1957 IIRC re the later more severe waves of flu infections

Chance of mixing up with Tamiflu resistant flu: significant concern but unknown probability. This flu was a problem in parts of the northern hemisphere last winter. Such mixing has ocurred in the past

Chance of bird flu mix: currnetly low but enough to concern some health organisations and IIRC they are looking closely at the bird flu outbreak in Egypt

I already know what I am talking about:

Aside from the misquoting, obviously not.

on full alert at my work. ed's are backed up, its bad news.

At least someone in the firing line knows what they are talking about. On the US stats, there are probably 10 to 20 times the number of known infected folk here, and the numbers will rapidly climb.

So just because you've read a few dailyKOs articles about the terrors of swine flu, you fancy yourself as a 'killer flu' expert, ey?

Fair enough. You stock up on perishables and oxygen masks, and hire a contractor to give the old underground bunker another once-over just to make sure it is still in working condition since the last scare (the Nuclear terror of North Korea circa 2006), while I go about my daily life more worried about being killed by sharks than by the 'killer flu' (since I rate statistics more highly than doomsday speculation).

Each to their own. :thumbsu:

Have pulled this from a recent abstract.

Trends in Recorded Influenza Mortality: United States, 1900–2004

Conclusions. The considerable similarity in mortality seen in pandemic and non-pandemic influenza seasons challenges common beliefs about the severity of pandemic influenza. The historical decline in influenza-classed mortality rates suggests that public health and ecological factors may play a role in influenza mortality risk. Nevertheless, the actual number of influenza-attributable deaths remains in doubt.

Here's the whole abstract.

Tests confirm swine flu on Pacific Dawn

AAP

May 28, 2009 12:30pm

TESTS have confirmed three crew members of the cruise ship Pacific Dawn have swine flu, Queensland Premier Anna Bligh says.

More details are expected to be released at a media conference in Brisbane this afternoon.

Premier Bligh said the vessel, which was due to dock in Cairns and the Whitsundays and had planned to divert to Port Douglas, would now be staying off the coast.

The vessel would not be docking in Queensland until authorities determined the appropriate quarantine measures.

The news comes as doctors fear the impending winter influenza season will cross-breed the swine and human strains of H1N1 and create a superbug resistant to antiviral drug Tamiflu.

Australian Medical Association of Queensland president-elect Dr Mason Stevenson says there is a real concern in the medical community that the nation's only ammunition against the swine flu will become ineffective.

He also said an estimate that one-in-five Australians may contract swine flu was a conservative figure.

"The human H1N1 Brisbane strain, which has been circulating in Australia for the last few years, is already largely resistant to Tamiflu,'' he said.

"Any cross-reactivity between the swine H1N1 bug and the human H1N1 bug will transfer this resistance.

"Then we will lose our front line antiviral antibiotic to combat this potentially serious and occasionally deadly disease.''

Dr Stevenson said a vaccine for swine flu wasn't expected to be available in commercial quantities until later in the year, after the influenza season passed.

DR where is the media beat up about HIN1 Brisbane virus and how many people have been infected with this virus that resists Tamiflu??? Furthermore how many people have died from HIN1 Brisbane Flu?? How come i've never heard about it?? Sounds eerily similar to H1N1 Swine Flu.
Only difference is a litttle Piggy copped this one first.

Oh wait a minute, H1N1 Brisbane flu is resistant to Tamiflu you say, well better push the virus that takes it so we can make some money back off the stockpiles that are fast expiring, governments gotta make some money back off that as they stockpiled enough to save the entire world when the bird flu was a threat. 8.7 million doses at $63 per dose is alot of money down the toilet if people aren't purchasing it. Most people when they get the flu have a good lie down, drink plenty of fluids and are sweet in a few days. Now with all this hysteria everyone with the flu will be on Tamiflu and the government will finally see a return on the investment they made a few years ago!

I bet the drug company didnt allow the government to stockpile 8.7 million doses in good faith, the government has paid for them and would like to see a return no doubt. What a perfect coincidence this is!

Revenue, fear mongering, greed will always take precedence, the government and the thiefs that lobby them (including the media) could not care less about you and it is obvious the way they are handling and portraying this current issue!
