That wont be half as lethal as the ManBearPig Flu:thumbsd:

H181 or 'ManBearSwine Flu' is no laughing matter, DeadlyAkkuwate. Due to warmer temperatures and higher oceans across the planet (as a result of global warming), H181 is predicted to wipe out half of the population by 2050 -- unless we all start driving hybrid vehicles and stop eating steak by 2012.

;)

Dry Rot's arguments seem very sensible to me. Although the current swine flu is relatively mild, the possibility of a recombinant strain with a much higher mortality rate should concern everyone.

Agreed. It is ignorant to ignore the possibilities that may result from the current strain of swine flu. What concerns me is that trade and supply routes may be largely restricted, ultimately leading to less goods available to the public which would cause mass hysteria.

I've got my food stocks ready and bug out plans in place!

Well trade was going to die down as soon as the world's governments stimulus money dries up and all we're left with is a shit banking systemt hat doesn't work.

At least now they can blame it on the swine flu.

Is there any truth to the rumours I've been hearing? That people who have died from the swine flu are getting up again? There were reports from Guadalajara, Mexico of the recently deceased actually getting up and murdering hospital staff.

Mass hysteria? I mean, I say it's bullshit and the bloody media will sensationalise ANYTHING these days. But I dunno...

I've heard that. Some small towns in the United States have had communication completely cutoff except for a few flares being lit from the roof of the local shopping centre.

Scary stuff.

stretching the emergency departments in SE QLD to the max. bad stuff.

Well yes.... but how much of that is caused by panic and people turning up at ED's that should have just stayed at home and got better as they do every other year with every other strain of "killer flu" (and they all are to some extent)??

I mean you are apparently there, how much of this is an outbreak of deadly swine-flu and how much is the general human condition referred to as irrational panic?

By the way, Perths ED are regularly stretched to breaking point by a couple of major car accidents or a particularly big weekend of violence in the pubs. What are the actual numbers rather than vague statements about "stretching departments" and so on?

Agree, there are less people with this flu than in previous years, it is really giving me the shits with all this media fuelled panic.

I'm off to the footy on Sunday, if I start felling like I might be getting the flu I will still go, same as every other year. Plus there is no way I am going to the Doctors if I do get the flu, I can't afford to be put in home detention.

Can someone update me with how many people have died or are in a critical condition because of it in Austtralia?

Its the spread and mutation of the disease mantis.

and I would be livid if I got it from someone with your attitude to be honest.

as for the emergency departments atm, they are not overcrowded by just flu victims. BUT it has increased the numbers who are attending departments thus causing bypasses and closures of ed's locally here. When I got to work last night, their were 6 ambulances backed up and 2 more in the public car park, waiting to unload. I have never seen it as busy.
There were 35 cat 3 people waiting to be seen, with a full department, no beds available in the hospital.Thats at the start of the shift. It was downhill from there.

But Campbell we have had far worse flu's, as the one I mentioned I got about 3 years ago, everyone I knew that had it were really sick for over a week & a lot of people died from it.

How come there was no action by the Government then? This panic is being driven by the economic downturn & pharmaceutical companies, mainly CSL, which is an Aussie based company who is making the supposed Swine Flu vaccine.

I understand because of you career you are being told to treat it like a pandemic, but sorry I can't take it seriously.

The problem with the disease this time is IT IS NOT the normal expected people who die from it, ie immunosuppressed people, the elderly and children.

ITS fit, healthy people. Thats the major concern.

Yet no one has died here, or been really sick. It's a beat up Campbell, sorry.

If it suddenly starts killing people then I will change my mind & apologise, until then I will dismiss it as a beat up.

What are you talking about?

The government has done something; lot's of things. Schools have ben closed, airport procedures changed, airport screenings, they've initiated an education campaign, they're releasing public awareness ad's... In fact, they're doing exactly the things that the pandemic plan that has been in place for some years now says they ought to. This is a very interesting time for virology, a chance to study a pandemic as it unfolds and for researchers to learn and adapt, no doubt it will result in changes to how flu pandemics are viewed and managed. As usual, it is the people who know the least about the science behind a subject that are the ones mocking a subject.

I agree it has value as a trial run of procedures... but, as a regular traveller (including 4 international flights this week) it smacks of style over substance or doing something for the purpose of being seen to be doing something... apart from more forms and some people in REALLY silly "nuclear fallout" style suits (at KL yesterday) it all seems an exercise in futility to be honest...

What researchers are doing and what info they are getting from it is probably also useful, that said it remains a mild flu with minimal deaths (less than one would expect from normal flu) and can someone please confirm the assertion trotted out by Campbell that the deaths are largely outside the normal groups? I have just watched a guy on CNBC who advised that its still largely hitting the usual suspects and that there was insufficient evidence of deaths outside those groups to make any judgements as to whether those who have died were/were not immuno-compromised. Anyone got any detailed info on this?

One person at my work is confirmed to have it - about 6 others have been sent home. No big deal, but at least they are telling all the people who are sick to go home and stay there. Too many people coming to work sick makes everyone else sick.

Yeah, that's just stupid. And the airport screening is little more than a stunt too, it won't pick up people incubating the virus only those already showing symptoms.

It probably will just fizzle out, but at the time of the outbreak some of the reports suggested that this had the hallmarks of a different sort of pandemic - it seemed to be a animal-to-human mutation, it seemed to be hitting the young and otherwise healthy, it also seemed possible that the death rate was alarmingly high - faced with that, in the scramble to understand exactly what was going on, health authorities did the cautious thing and recommended to prepare based on what the limited information was showing. Some of that stuff has changed as more has been learned about the virus, like the demographics that are vulnerable to it.

Can't you read? I was talking about the bad flu that happened 3 or 4 years ago, this flu is a minnow in comparison, yet no media pushed panic then, people actually died from that flu in Australia & people were really sick for a week or so.

Satire at it's best...

...or stupidity at its worst...

Geez the Victorian government is incompetent. Its at a point where the Federal government should seriously consider impeaching them and taking control of the state. Bunch of hacks couldnt run a u8 soccer league never mind a state. Embarassing. Better off getting Mugabe in then the Victorian Labor Party I say
