I have just made the big move from Melbourne to Sydney for work and am already missing the footy.

Are any of you Sydney residents? Do you get together anywhere to watch Tiger matches. Is their a good pub (preferably in the city) to watch the footy?

I tell you what, the AFL has a massive job to do up here and is nowhere near as close as people in Melbourne are led to believe. I was under the impression that the people up here would at least know what AFL is but the guys I work with literally know NOTHING about the greatest game in the world.

What did you expect when they follow that stoopid meathead game called rugby. Worst game in the world.

I know what you mean-when I went up there ,it hardly gets a mention.
Another funny thing I saw in the papers from last year-they had all the league team lineups listed with their logos but the storm logo was microscopic compared to the rest.

They have a real chip on their shoulders concerning Melbournians and the greatest game on Earth -aussie rules.

Lived there for a couple of years Scroda, and if it's like it was before, you're going to struggle. AFL tended to get almost no coverage if the Swans weren't involved. The Swans players and supporters used to hang out at the East Leagues club in Bondi Junction when I was there, and I made a couple of mates that were Ex-Melbournites who just wanted a chat about serious footy matters. None barracked for Richmond, but we all ended up having the same desire for the Swans to get beaten. Things may have changed and a few pubs may have small AFL gatherings now. Best of luck.

Scroda -

I've been in Sydney for 8 years now and am a mad Tigers man. A good mate of mine has also been up here for a number of years and we always get together through the year for a few beers and to watch the games.

There is a Tiger supporters group in Sydney and they meet at the Drummoyne (Balmain area) Leagues Club to watch the games. I've actually never made it there but there's also no shortage of pubs around the Paddo area that show the games.

Sydney is no-where near as intense as Melb when it comes to footy but you can still get good coverage if you've got an Internet connection and Fox footy.

Keep in touch through here and I'll let you know which pub we'll be at for the 1st game. There is also a sports bar at Darling Harbor (I think it's called One World Sports) that shows most games. The only problem is when there is a big Union or League game in competition. Most times we can be found there.

Go Tiges

Thanks for all your help guys. May have to catch up with you nineteen eighty. looks like fostels the go and will have to make friends with a victorian bartender who has rights over the remote control! Fat chance

It's not that bad. Most pubs are reasonably flexible and as I said before, as long as there's no clash with a big union or league game, they'll put the AFL on.

I've found the biggest problem being atmosphere. Most of the supporters are a little on the quiet side. They get a little nervous when there's a few Melbournians watching a game. The other pub that is known as a footy pub is Percy's opposite the Nth Sydney Hotel on Miller St. That became a home away from home for me for my first few years in Sydney. One of the local AFL teams also has it as home base so there's always a good crowd watching.

cheers

Know exactly how it feels. Lived in sydney for 10 years, no body knows anything about, or what aussie rules is for that matter. Forget kicking a footy around up there with anyone, they dont know how to kick the thing. Beautiful moving back to melbourne. Melbourne is footy:D.

The Mrs was doing some work in Sydney and arranged me a daughter to fly up (4 days after 9/11). On the Sunday the Tiges were playing Carlton in the final and she planned a family excursion to Manly. Luckily a pub opposite the beach had the game on. Was a fairly old prestige looking pub. Not sure if this will help but it sure helped me on the day. By the way there was 50 ppl in the pub and me and a young lass who I finally plonked my clack next too were the only ones watching the game.

Jeez, try living in country NSW! Broadcasts are pathetic, and even having Fox Footy is useless at times.
Even worse is trying to find a local team to play for!!!

Here I was thinking living anywhere near Byron Bay would be like your own nirvana. I now see it's not. :(

Well, true, I can't complain too much living near the beach, perfect weather etc. However, come the footy season, having to stay up 'til 1 am to see a game, and on top of that sitting through ten minutes of ads while the game telecast skips forward 15 minutes is a bit annoying. But apart from that, I shouldn't whinge really...
