Sydney's stand on betting

Much less of a chance to train yourself to be a winner gambling though
See that's the thing. You can't. You can't win with Betfair, Sportsbets, Bet365247alldayerryday, Ladbrokes, campaignerface, whatever they are.
They close your accounts if you're successful. It's bullshit.

Never heard of a crypto exchange ******* you off because you made money.
(I did get bumped from a crypto exchange for buying drugs tho, which was also a bit annoying but anyhow).

You know some of us are capable of being against the insidious scourge of gambling, AND the Swans sponsorship by Qatar Airways.

Just another BS argument for letting the vultures get away with anything they like.

It doesnt seem like the Swans themselves are against how the Qatar government treats gay people. Or migrant workers. Or women. Or anyone who isnt a rich man I guess.

You can train yourself to win, just not on online sports betting.

David Walsh (who owns MONA) made himself hundreds of millions from gambling(has a PHD in maths). Initially started off as a card-counter and the rest was made off of mathematical algo rhythms by plugging his business into the TOTE, as well as making money from online casinos. His best mate has the largest gambling turnover of anyone in the world, around half a billion (also from Hobart).

That is the absolute exception however. If you want to win in gambling, you need to play against other players, not the house, because the house always wins.

Much easier to make money trading of course, because it's a proper skill and the exchange makes money whether you win or lose, so it's beneficial for exchanges to have their users actually profitable because they stay int he game longer. It's the exact opposite of how the gambling industry operates. They're a bunch of crooks.

The hide to make a self-aggrandising video, staring down the barrel of a camera
Except the Swans didn't make it - this is part of the NSW state government's 'reclaim the game' campaign. They've done this with a number of clubs, the Western Sydney Wanderers for example.
Sydney were probably paid for the ad, probably partly in compensation for losing advertising revenue at the SCG, which they may have had no say over. The same NSW government who paid for this campaign also own and run the SCG (through Venues NSW).

FWIW the cats banned gambling advertising at KP 4 years ago, does not seem to have done us much harm

LOL “current reality”.

Like it’s been like this for centuries.

“Their careers are financed by it”. LOL. Their careers are partially financed by it. And not long ago their careers were somehow perfectly remunerative without the gambling dollars.

“Alternate reality”. What, you think everyone has the memory of a goldfish?

Some of us can remember AFL before 2015.

Such a BS disingenuous argument.

ROFL

BS disingenuous argument… yep, you’ve nailed it.

This is complete PR s**t.

Every person in that ad is in the betting business.

Open your eyes.

Yes, it's hypocritical. Like I said earlier, I've no doubt we could find hypocrisy in Mahatma Gandhi.

But their stance on gambling, which is what we are discussing here, is to be applauded.

It seems there's always the whataboutery whenever anyone does anything worthy.

And it can be ignored, or else nothing good ever happens.

They made a lot of their money from the tote paying them rebates so not exactly the same situation as the average punter. The rebates TAS TOTE paid them ending up killing the TAS TOTE and the government had to sell it off for a pittance.

Yeah, that's true.

If you're a Walsh family member, David will gamble online for you make money.

Won't do it for less than 20k though.

Yup, no argument from me. My grandfather was a professional gambler. Horses, cricket, poker, darts, snooker, whatever. Put a market on it and he'd throw cash at it. Was pretty good at it too actually, if he wasn't a massive piece of s**t I'd thank him for the house I live in lol.

Being a full time Gambler and a massive piece of s**t usually go hand in hand, unfortunately.

And you’re clearly a one-eyed duffle coat wearer.

The front of these people is incredible. The fact some actually swallow it is staggering.
We've already established you're a cynic.

And you can't even establish a consistent position.

Talking about "current reality" as if it was ever thus, and not a turbocharging that in truth has happened in only the last few years.

Then on the other hand railing against something for being "PR". In 2023. On social media.

Do you know how much they were getting per year from betting companies ?

Yes, “Current” means “ever thus”. Very good.

I hope players go further and boycott the game itself until the AFL disassociates with this dog industry that preys on the weak and vulnerable
You do realise that these weak and vulnerable are just going to get into some other addictive habit. It’s called Darwinism.

Yeah Nah, I give Sydney no credit at all for this.

This is a PR stunt they have clearly shown with other sponsors they do not care about taken moral or ethical stands.

Qatar Airways
Nike
Origin Energy
McDonald's
Furphy- Alcohol has ruined as many lives as gambling
QBE is one of the dodgiest insurance companies going around as well.

Every NSW RL club is funded by mini casinos.

One of the greater hypocrisys was when Netball Australia rejected Gina Rineharts money on moral grounds that she wont apologise for her dads actions, while at the same time having their number 1 sponsor in Origin Energy being a key exporter of goods from the Uyghur prison camps.

Its amazing at how so many of these people are in bed with something 10 times worse then what they are fighting against

Cummins is a good one. He is against Alinta Gas for environmental reasons but then plays for a IPL franchise whose owners actively employ thousands of child slaves and who actually funded the beginnings of their business by starting up a fake bank to steal millions of money from people to start up their company and also pay off the authorites, using part of that money to bribe officials to protect themselves. Being against energy but okay with theft and child slavery is a pretty special trait
So because Cummins (your example) chooses to take a stand on environmental issues he has to take a stand on all moral/humanitarian issues tied in to cricket?

that's fine but that's not the issue at hand
