Sylvia has played some good footy, but the problem is that he's inconsistent and lacks fitness to run out a whole game. The latter issue can be fixed if he actually completes a pre-season, and perhaps his consistency will be solved by that as well.

I'm probably going to get flamed for this but I think Tambling has showed enough for tiger fans to get very excited, once he fully matures he'll be a very classy player.

Hope your right. Tambling would add so much to the side if he could become the star he should be. Having a classy fast midfielder of the ilk of McLeod or Burgoyne alongside Deledio would be great, and if he could develop to become a SF simliar to Farmer would be handy.

Still alot of doubts though. Good to see opposition supporters see something in Tambling. Sylvia will come good IMO, played some good games last year IIRC. Has he done a proper pre-season this year?

Well if I'm not mistaken, I used a comparison in Shannon Grant. Sylvia isn't Brock McLean either, and never will be.

yes i understand u used shannon grant in your comparison but u also stated at sylvia doesnt have pace...well correct me if im wrong but brock mclean doesnt exactly set the world alight with his pace...neither does ben cousins, simon goodwin, simon black...i could keep goin on and on...as u can see u dont need to be lightning quick to make it at afl level nowadays...

From what I've seen of all the players you've mentioned, I still think you do if you're Colin Sylvia.

Sylvie is a sleeping giant. With a solid preseason, he'll fire up. Won't forget the five classy goals he kicked on a senior Melbourne defender in a practice match last year.

But Goodwin, Cousins, Black and McLean are A grade midfielders with great ball-winning ability. Sylvia doesn't have that. I think that's what Mark is trying to say, that unless Sylvia develops ball winning ability or passing ability of say Grant, he'll need to become faster or be consigned to the AFL scrapheap.

Correct mark?

Nope he's still injured.

He always plays well at the end of seasons, because his fitness has usually sorted itself out by then. He was actually really good for the last 5 or so games last year, even though he was still playing limited minutes (yet equaling Walkers output, but obviously with less errors and more goals).

Sylvia is very much in the Riccuito/B.Johnson mould, he is a forward/midfielder who will do better as an outside player even though he has the body for an inside role.

He's a great kick of the footy and can consistently nail goals from outside 50. He's just not getting much game time, and he's not training anywhere near enough.

Luckily for Demons fans, we've had the amazing Brock McLean come along at the same time, so it alleviates the pain of Sylvia's lack of output. Unfortunately Carlton fans don't get that luxury and simply have to to stcik with trying to talk up what will surely go down as one of the biggest F ups in draft history (taking Walker over McLean)

Yeah, but McLean and Black especially, both have exceptionally quick brains. They know more about playing in close than 99.9% of the league - they are just genuine footy brains.

Sylvia is imo, better suited to the B Johnson role of playing both forward and as an outside midfielder. He's a great kick, a long kick AND he's an incredible overhead mark and super-strong.

Mmm. Somehow I doubt it. :)

Eventually Sylvia has got to perform and stop blaming injuries though. I'm sure he will but you can't go through your career going "Well is was injured"

Tambling has Deledio also, who has come along well, so the pressure on Tambling is less.

Walker doesn't have anyone from 2003 early to help, but they do have Murphy who in some way makes up for the Walker disappointment.

Exactly, Richmond and Melbourne fans can at least say "well, one out of two ain't bad" but Carlton fans just say "well, he is crap but I ahve to pretend he's good otherwise that year was a COMPLETE waste"

Walker is ok, your being harsh on him. I like both players actually and think that they are unfairly criticised. In a year or two they will both be good. (Sylvia and Walker).

Some players are also unfairly pumped up beyond what they have done on a footy field ;) Are your RJ's showinggggggggg...............

As for Tambling he doesn't even look like a footballer. Sylvia looks the type but has been injured. Walker looks the type but needs to screw his head on.

Tambling however looks like Oakley Nicholls. i.e Like me if I ran out on a footy field without training up first. LOST!

he has got ball winning ability....he's been injured the last 2 years....and as for goodwin cousins and black....they are all much older than sylvia, dont worry sylvia when fit will definately become an A GRADE midfielder

12.5 possessions per game last year suggests otherwise. IMO Sylvia's talent doesn't reside in getting the contested ball, it's his fitness and ability to cover the ground and link up. Even though he was injured last year, Sylvia would have won more of the ball if he was a ball-winner. He's not.

when he's fit he'll prove otherwise....he was drafted as a ball winner by the melbourne footy club....just wait and see..

Hey Parrot,

Didn't Sylvia earn a Rising Star nomination against your mob after the 2005 Parkville tip farewell game :)

It isn't terribly clear whether we are voting for who we think is better or worse. The thread starter seems to be asking which is the bigger draft blunder... I wonder if people haven't looked at the poll and just assumed it's who they think is better.

Looks like Sylvia is the biggest draft blunder :)

I agree but thats how all these polls turn out. Personally I'm stuffed if I know how two kids how have barely seriously entered their AFL careers would be talked about as draft blunders. I also love the way some people conveniently forget things like injuries in case it may interfere with their sh*t hanging of the club intended. Last I looked it was pretty hard to prove anything from a hospital bed or a cast on your leg. Boggles the mind.

A large percentage of polls are bona fide trolls. Some are just more well disguised than others. This board is more or less Bay13 in poll form.
