Brown, Reid and Howe form a guaranteed trio back there. Reid is a-grade and Howe is close to that off this season. You have a bent against Brown, so it's almost not worth getting drawn in to an argument with you about it. You're a broken record and off the mark. All I'll say is he is a good reliable defender, who offensively should play to his limits.
I'm bullish about Langdon and Scharenberg. Both have shown AFL qualities. Keeffe, Frost, Marsh provide key position depth. Goldsack depth as a third tall. It isn't even an issue.
Our issues in defense are more about durability than anything. And maybe a quality half back distributor. I'm hoping Scharenberg and Ramsay can help out here.
What if Brown leaves? You have noted the KPD depth we hold but how close are they to Brown. I see all three as a step down, based on what we have seen in the past. What about the future? Reid, in particular, is not likely to have a long career. I can't see anyone listed that will ever develop to his level.

Brown hasn't left yet, and I suspect he'll stay. But even so Reid, Keeffe, Frost, Marsh, White can all play key defender. Marsh is our developing key defender and he is already a top 25 intercept marking player across the competition. He has similar limitations as Brown with his field kicking. You flip that argument around on our key forwards and it's a bit more damning.

Nice, didn't know that. Spot on with regards to forward line being the bigger concern.

Big year for Marsh in 2017. He needs to become one of the best full backs in the AFL. Is it going to happen? Probably not.

Big year for thats gold , will people continue to take the bait? or will they finally realise that 95% of what he says is taking the P 1 5 5

Losing (potentially) Brown and Frost.

Have Reid, Keefe (unknown commodity at the moment) Langdon, Marsh.

Feel we are one experienced, competent, bankable tall defender light there.

Go to AFL live and watch the Collingwood v Bulldogs game. He's far from cooked. I hope he is still with us next season, but he is fringe 22.
That why I was asking. He always seems pretty reliable to me. I am just a bit curious why he is isnt getting more regular games.

Interesting that neither of the 2 grand finalist have big marque talls down back. It seems mobile talls in the low to mid 190 cm mark is the current trend.

With Howe, Marsh, Ramsey, Scharenberg and Langdon If well coached and developed surely they can be developed into players who can play similar roles to those played by Rampe for the Swans and Wood/Hamling for the Dogs.

Ah so you DID rate Frost.

Still do to some extent. As I said he can still go on to have a long if unspectacular career like Zac Dawson . Good closing speed and reasonable defensive attributes.

I always maintained however that there's no room for both him and brown in the same side . He's moved on for more opportunities.

Cloke. Cloke should be played down back.

I'll say this until the day he retires.

He has all the physical attributes to make a fantastic centre half back. His field kicking is more than adequate for the role and with a kick as booming as his could launch attacks from CHB with ease. We also would improve our goal kicking accuracy as a side considerably and our forward line would become less predictable.

HAving said that, I think Marsh with some more weight on him could be a really could backman long term.

Cloke at FB was never tried. I don't see Brown lasting, he was dropped this year and I see him as being pretty over rated after one good game on Riewoldt. Don't think Brown is the answer.

You were talking us up as premiership contenders a few days ago if we signed wells mayne rockliff
I know I thought Marsh was staying though and Brown was a chance so i didn't think the KPP backs backline would be THAT bad. Now we aren't getting Rockliff either we aren't going anywhere again.

Frost couldn't even get a game, Brown is one dimensional is who can't run or kick, Marsh is a loss but he still needs a lot of work till his anywhere near a decent backmen.

Notwithstanding the fact that Frost, Marsh and potentially Brown are gone, you're right about durability being a big issue. You can also add being having a better system/better coaching to the mix. And this applies to the whole team - not just the backline. Our transition from attack to defence is horrible. I know Brown was crucified for that debacle against Kennedy but our lack of team defence meant that the Eagles mids were under no pressure when kicking to Kennedy.

Agreed - another example is the Weagles Web in 2015. They were undersized with the likes of Wellingham and Yeo zoning off to chop out against bigger opponents. Marsh is a big loss as he had the mobility to play this role. Similarly, Hawthorn play a pretty small backline.

I'd like to see a bigger mid like Crisp work out of the backline more. We also have Mayne who has experience in the backline as well.

If we lose Brown, we may have difficulties if the opposition load up with tall timber/gorilla forwards (eg Cloke, Lobb, Patton, Jenkins) but if our backline is well-drilled (a big assumption) we still have the right personnel to cover loss of KPDs.

Frost gone, Marsh gone. If Brown joins them and does leave, then you think this year our defence was horrible? Wait until next year when it will reach new heights. You need a gorilla down back to nullify the oppositions talls.
