Team Depth

i seriously think freo are going to do it this year, we have topped up and drafted well. are the chardy sipping pinkos starting to get worried?

yes, geelong lost a few very handy players that may have been useful if/when injuries pop up during the season.

Freo have as much depth as Gary Colemans swimming pool!

In fairness I think that the Roos have quite good depth (obviously behind the Cats)

But if you think about it, our draftees are mostly "ready made" type players eg/ Tarrent being a KPP that has the body shape to slot into the team if needed, as opposed to a Notte type who the Eagles will have to keep in the shed for a few years.

Players like Power, Brown, Sansbury etc are all good enough players if required, which strengthens the depth of the list, yet the only problem I see is that some of the depth players are close to getting a 22 game.

geelong lost a lot of depth at the end of last season. the eagles have weak players after their best 22. i think freo have great depth this year. we will trouble lots of teams with our dazzling array of skills.:thumbsu:

Depth is over rated. Its no good having "depth" running around in the VFL, or WAFL when there is no prospect of that depth ever getting a senior guernsey.

Sure, Geelong lost at least 5 players of note at the end of 2007 - Ablett, King, Playfair, Gardner and Callan. But realistically only King & Ablett were senior prospects.

Our depth is still pretty formidable. But if we were to lose KPP's like Scarlett, Ablett Jnr, Steve Johnston or Brad Ottens I doubt we could adequately cover them.

Best Teams for Depth:

Geelong (senior and reserves premiers last year)

West Coast (anyone who can pull Priddis out of a hat like they did last year deserves praise)

Hawthorn, specifically their forwards. Mitch Thorp would be looking at senior game time if he was at any other club.

Worst Teams for Depth
St Kilda (can't believe the OP mentioned them, terrible depth albeit caused by their annual injury list, Casey are awful)

Carlton (maybe in a couple of years they might climb up but there would be fewer teams with so little AFL game time under their belt IMHO)

Richmond, obviously still a bit of deadwood hanging around.

Melbourne, I doubt there's a team with greater defensive issues going around in the AFL.

Sydney, not their fault though, a good run of injuries has seen little rotation in the senior side not to mention their reserves then match up in the mickey mouse ACT league at half pace to win by 25 goals each week.
