Not many teams starting with Shaw down back this year. Any reason? He's priced about $40k more than Rance, Laird et al. which I think I can justify spending. He hasn't missed a game in years, massive average over this time and is a captain option. Could be a great POD.
Shaw can score very high but also puts out some very low scores. Rance is a more consistent player but with a lower ceiling.

Starting with Shaw means you will ride all the highs and lows. Not starting with him could reward if he hits his best games early while others have to pay top dollar to bring him in, but also could cost if he stinks it a couple of times early while others will be able to pick up him mid-year at a cheaper price.

Shaw with his more variable scoring is just a bigger gamble than a player such as Rance, that's all. Some will be willing to take the early gamble and some wont. Almost everyone will have him in their team eventually though.

Did a quick team this morning. Here is where I currently sit. Still got almost $100,000 in the salary. May look at bringing Willie Rioli in for Black, and Graham/Bolton for Scheer. I originally had Caddy, Jamie Elliot etc, but downgraded them. Any Thoughts?:

JOM unlikely for R1. Get Myers.

Jasper POD God :)

Decided to stack mids this year and minimise mid pricers. 117k rookies will change but l'm pretty set on the rest. Some risky picks that have big upside if they stay fit and in form.

Pretty risky to have no coverage for sandi, I like the rest of the team. Good side

Shaw - Laird - Hibberd - Schranberg - Berry - Newman (Ryan, Stewart)
Danger - Pendles - JPK - Treloar - Bont - Fyfe - Powell Pepper - Myers (Pickett, Brown, Graham)
Gawn - Sandi - Some campaigner from Freo
Dahlhaus - Macrae - Ryder - McCluggage - Bowes - Black (Bolton, Rioli)

The forwards are awful. I have no idea what I'm gonna do there but I only picked Ryder for DPP.
Rookies are obviously just fillers, mostly.
I'm likely to change either Pendles, JPK or Treloar to Heppell or Beams or someone cheaper.
Backline, I like Hibberd at his price, still might change there too.

Going to be a good year this year. Taking Dusty, Zorko and Merrett out of the forward line is going to make a lot of the teams different.

I like mid staking this year. Plenty of players that should get 110+ no problem. However I think you've overdone it. Usually we have 1 or 2 pretty good mids averaging 70-85 from basement price who you'd rather have on the field (Kerridge, Petracca, Vandenberg, Miller, Crouches, JOM was at 100, etc), I think you should have room for at least 1 if not 2 mid rookies. Swallow is a trap imo, hes not averaging above 95 and he's far from a keeper.

Love the Acres pick

I don't have the balls to pick him

I'm trying not to let my love for him to blind my judgement but I just get a break out feeling.

I had it with Ross in the midfield last year, at 360k he went on to average 95 and could have been a real useful stepping stone. Didn't back my gut feeling and regret it. Acres in the forward line should average similar and would be a worthwhile fwd keeper.

Last 5 rounds, 2nd in our BnF resulted in a SC avg of 96.6 = increased midfield time really showed. Stuck at HF for a lot of the year but this'll be his mid year. Few other good games from the midfield scattered throughout the season.

If I get it wrong I'll sideways trade to Billings ahead of rd 3 to show I haven't learnt my lesson ;):D
