Adam McPhee will play against the Kangaroos.

McPhee fit, Welsh faces fitness test

Sunday, 16 March 2008
Adam McPhee is a certain starter for Essendon in Round 1 after getting through yesterday’s VFL practice match against Werribee. The match committee felt McPhee would benefit from a hit-out with Bendigo after missing some of the pre-season with a hamstring strain. McPhee moved well, putting to rest any fairs he would miss the match against the Kangaroos.

Andrew Welsh however may miss the start of the season with hamstring tightness. Welsh is expected to train later this week and face a fitness test but Matthew Knights has been very clear on the fact he will not risk players – particularly early in the season – that are not 100 per cent fit.

McPhee played up forward for Bendigo, kicking the first goal of the game. He sat out the second half and watched a very young Bendigo line-up go down by five points to a Werribee side that contained a number of listed Kangaroo players.

Other senior-listed Essendon players that took part in the game were Tom Bellchambers, Jay Neagle and Andrew Lee. Lee and Bellchambers came through the game unscathed but Neagle was forced from the ground after a knock to the ankle. It will be assessed this week but early indications are that it is not serious.

From what I saw of Pears against WC last week, theres no way he will play rd1. The kid tried hard and actually made it to most of the contests when attempting to spoil against his opponent. But he looked liked a player who has a bit to learn (not saying he doesn't have heaps of potential) and I would suggest he will play with Bendigo for a few weeks.

Now that McPhee looks in and Welsh looks like he's out and Winderlich is certainly out, I've changed my side from the start of the week...

Rama Mal Nash

Paddy Fletcher NLM

Lovett Jobe Dempsey

Davey Scotty Monfries

Jetta Lloyd McVeigh

Rucks..Hille,Stanton,Houli

Int..Slattery,Laycock,JJ and .. either Pev or Dyson

NLM could be swapped for Johns imo. Only because Johns played pretty well in the WC match and looked confident down back.

Wish I could fit Neagle in but it sounds like he will have a sore ankle this week.

B: Dustin Fletcher - Mal Michael - Nathan Lovett-Murray
HB: Courtney Demspey- Patrick Ryder - Jay Nash
C: Mark McVeigh - Jobe Watson - Andrew Lovett
HF: Adam McPhee - Scott Lucas - Alwyn Davey
FF: Leroy Jetta - Matthew Lloyd - David Hille
R: Jason Laycock - Brent Stanton - Bachar Houli
INT: Ricky Dyson - Adam Ramanaskus - Andrew Welsh - Angus Monfries
EMERG: Henry Slattery - Damien Pevrill - Jason Johnson

I reakon thats our best side minus Winderlich.

I think Welsh has to be left out if he's got hamstring soreness. He had a few minor hamstring problems last year, and I'm not into risks at this stage of the season, especially when we've got plenty of other viable options.

This leaves my sides as follows (I'm also working on the assumption that Winderlich, Hocking and Gumbleton will be unavailable):

B: Fletcher Michael Ramanauskas
HB: Nash Ryder Houli
C: Lovett Watson Dyson
HF: McPhee Lucas Lovett-Murray
F: Davey Lloyd Jetta
Foll: Hille Stanton McVeigh
Inter(from): Laycock Monfries Dempsey Slattery Johnson Peverill Johns

YES!

I would love to see this squad line up!

Why hasn't anyone got young Sam Lonergan in their team? I was really impressed with him throughout the NAB Cup campaign.

Yeah, interesting one.

I guess if you have Watson, Slattery and one of Pev or JJ then maybe team balance might be a little screwed.

I doubt he'll play round 1 but I wouldn't be at all surprised if he's picked

Hey guys. Just out of interest I think this is how North Melbourne will line up. Playing Easter Monday is great but I can't wait all weekend to see the game! Should be very interesting to see if Essendon can follow on from a great NAB Cup campaign, should be a great hit-out.

B: Gibson Watt Pratt
HB: Firrito Petrie S.Thompson
C: Wells Harris Rawlings
HF: Jones Edwards McMahon
FF: Thomas N.Thompson Hale
R: McIntosh Simpson Harvey
I/C: Swallow Campbell Lower Hansen
Eme: Brown Urquhart Harding

Out:
Jesse Smith (Inj.)
Jess Sinclair (Inj.)

- Missing Jesse Smith is huge, wont return til Round 5 and is a huge loss.
- Good chance Laidley will give in and play Brown instead of Hansen (Ugh).

I was just wondering why given Knights said he wanted his best possible 22 on the field for your last NAB cup game, why didn't Mal Michael play? Is he carrying some sort of injury?

Assuming he is right to go, here's my predicted lineup fwiw.

B: Fletcher Michael Rama
HB: Lovett-Murray Ryder Nash
C: Lovett Watson Houli
HF: McPhee Lucas Jetta
F: Hille Lloyd Davey

Ruck: Laycock Stanton McVeigh

Int: Dyson Monfries Slattery Lonergan

Emg: Dempsey, Peverill, JJ

A question for the early birds, will our extended squad be announced on the Wednesday or Thursday?

I'd like to see who's in the mix as unfortunately I'll be away for the weekend from Thursday morning and more than likely will miss everything bar the game itself on Monday.

Is the 'squad' the 22 + 3 emergencies = 25? Man I am frothing for this game can't believe we have to wait the extra few days till Monday... bring it on!:)

Who do you think he'll get a game in front of?

What do you mean by "get a game in front of "?

As far as i can tell there are still positions in the midfield and interchange up for grabs.

He has played in the probables and played in the NAB cup and the last game in WA, so as i said i would be surprised if he didn't play.

probables?

i was pleasantly surprised when i made the trip out to cranbourne. seeing sammy in that black strip indicated that knights is serious about giving games to some kids who previously haven't had the opportunities. i too would expect him to play against the roos, especially with heath being unavailable. he will be in the extended squad at least for sure

Wonder how many games the young'uns will get in a row. Knights I think said 6-8, while I wouldn't mind at least 4-5.

Sheedy only seemed to give them 2-3 max last year just to give them a taste but did not let them getting really settled, Lonergan didn't even get a game when he was kicking ass in the VFL.
