Opinion Team of the Decade (2000-2009)

Go watch some tapes of Scotty West AG, he was a genius in close, and led the AFL disposal count for 3-4 years running I'm pretty sure. From 96-07 he was considered one of the best players in the comp despite playing in a largely unsuccessful team. That's gotta count for something.
I've have seen him play before and some random youtube video isn't going to sway me. He could easily swap places with guys like Ricciuto or Ablett like you said.

FB: James Clement - Matthew Scarlett - Dustin Fletcher
HB: Andrew McLeod - Justin Leppitsch - Chris Johnson
C: Simon Black - Michael Voss (C) - Nathan Buckley
HF: Jason Akermanis - Warren Tredrea - Mark Riccuito (VC)
F: Brad Johnson - Matthew Lloyd - James Hird
Foll: Dean Cox - Chris Judd - Ben Cousins
Int: Scott West - Matthew Pavlich - Adam Goodes - Matthew Richardson

Ablett not in because 3 years of dominance simply isn't enough, compared to something like Simon Black, who's been dominant all year compared to Ablett who was nothing before 2007. If Ablett were to fit in then I might as well put Chris Grant in too, he was still very good for the first couple of years and then age started getting in toward the latter stages. Riewoldt misses out because I thought Tredrea was the best CHF this decade and Pavlich for his versatility. Jonathan Brown misses for the same reason Riewoldt along with the fact that Brown was never good until 2007. Yeah, he may have been important but I believe the Team of the Decade should be constructed with quality and in that case, I rate Tredrea higher, not to mention, I think Brown is seriously overrated for people think his 'leadership' is a huge factor.

B: Wirrapanda -- Scarlett -- Glass

HB: McLeod -- Fletcher -- Cousins

C: Hird -- Black -- Voss

HF: Akermanis -- Tredrea -- Ablett

FF: Ricciuto -- Fevola -- B.Johnson

R: Cox -- Judd -- Buckley

INT: Goodes -- Lloyd -- West -- Kirk

2 players you may raise some questions about:

Fevola = anyone that can win a Coleman medal and continually finish high in the goal kicking list, while playing for a bottom 8 team is worthy imo. (regardless of his off field antics)

Kirk: You need a tagger, and he is as gutsy as they come any of them players would love to play alongside him rather than against him.

I think Kennelly gave great run off half back and Spider in as the other ruckman.

B: C Johnson (Bris) M Scarlett (Geel) D Fletcher (Ess)
HB: D Hardwick (Ess / Port) J Leppitsch (Bris) L Hodge (Haw)
C: N Buckley (Coll) M Voss (Bris) J Bartel (Geel)
HF: J Hird (Ess) J Brown (Bris) A Goodes (Syd)
F: J Akermanis (Bris / WB) M Lloyd (Ess) B Cousins (WCE / Rich)
Foll: D Cox (WCE) C Judd (WCE / Carl) G Ablett (Geel)
I/C: B Lade (Port) S Black (Bris) M Ricciuto (Ade) C Enright (Geel)

All except Buckley and Ricciuto are premiership players. Buckley got in because he somehow dragged that rubbish Collingwood side of 02-03 into two grand finals. Ricciuto because Adelaide were the dominant home and away season team for a number of years in the middle of the decade.

Team is dominated by Brisbane and Geelong players with solid representation from WCE, Essendon and Port. Tredrea edged out by Brown on weight of 3x premierships and consistency over the whole decade.

Emergencies are Richardson, Reiwoldt, B Johnson.

Your glaring errors in my opinion are:

- Out: Brown, In: Tredrea. Tredrea is comfortably the CHF of this decade.
- Out: Kouta, In: Simon Black. Swap Black and Hird between Wing and HF also.
- Out: Mick Martyn, In: Chris Johnson. MM wasn't much chop, and backline way too tall with him in it.
- Swap Judd onto Field for Robert Harvey
- Out: Everiit, In: Pavlich. Goodes to be second ruckman.
- Out: Jeff Farmer, In: Akermanis. Complete no-brainer.
- Remove Hodge, White and Richo from your extended bench

Brown has to be in. could also find a spot for tredrea. No way is he better than brown. was only elite for 4 years . brown has been elite since at least 04.
Black in, happy with that.
Must find a spot for richo, as he is a better footballer than half the side!!

Tredrea edged out by Brown on weight of 3x premierships...

Yeah, because his 19 game/14 goal contribution in 2002 in particular was just the tonic the Lions needed to go back-to-back.

... and consistency over the whole decade.

Up until 2007 he hadn't kicked over 39 goals in a full year, won a Best and Fairest or made the All-Australian team.

lol. seriously.

You're counting Brown's partial 04/05 years where he barely managed to get on the park due to suspension and injury, but ignoring Tredrea's '99 when he finished runner-up in Port's B&F count at the age of 20 and his 2005 where he won his third B&F and was laughably jipped out of his 5th straight AA CHF gong by some late Pav-hype.

Tredrea was elite during 2001-2005 and if you are calling Brown elite since 2004 then Tredrea was elite this year as well.
tredrea was not elite this year. maybe im being a little harsh on tredrea but imo he is just not in the same league as brown. he was a gun and deserves a spot on the bench prob, but not at browns expense. Brown has been extremelly stiff with AA selections.

It's not about AA selections. It's about dominating as a key forward. Both are top shelf and both are in the same league talent wise so I have no problem with your selection of Tredrea on the bench. However, saying he wasn't elite for long enough as your reason doesn't make sense.

Here's a list born of an apparently entirely erroneous thread.
I hope you like it.

The Erroneous Thread's Amalgum 22

HF: Hird - Tredrea - Riewoldt
FF: Akermanis - Lloyd - B.Johnson

This is what these idiots think, anyway.

But this is the real answer.
FB: Pickett, Scarlett, Wirrpunda
HB:Mcleod, Leppitsch, C.Bolton
C:Akermanis, Ricciuto, Cooney
HF:S.Johnson, J.Brown, Cousins
FF: Chapman, Gehrig, Farmer
Foll:Sandilands, Black, G.Ablett jr.
Int:primus, Goodes, Voss, Pavlich

Coach: Paul Roos.

BTW, I can't believe there's a whole board just for making lists.
I don't really know how I feel about it yet, I'll have to get back to you.

I know Pickett won a Norm Smith and all, but even considering my Port bias, if he's in the best 22 of the decade i'll eat my computer. No way does he even come close.

Brown had a break out year in 2007, but before that he was either average or suspended half the time. As DT said, didn't crack 39 goals until 2007, didn't win a B&F until 2007, didn't get an AA guernsey until 2007.

If people are leaving Ablett out because 3 years of dominance isn't enough, then Brown should be nowhere near the team. I rate Brown very highly on current performance, but over the course of the decade Pavlich and Riewoldt have been better, and Tredrea has been the best.

Alot of players not in the "best 22 of the decade" won't make it into the "best 22 of the decade". You can't pick all KPP's & midfielder's.

Pickett, for mine, is one of the 2 best back pocket's of the decade.

I agree that Aussie Gun's team is almost certainly the best, just shows you how good the Eagles Midfield was when you see Cox, Judd, Cousins in people Rucks.

My Only query is with the coach of the decade, it annoys me how the premiership coach is always coach of the year and following from that how premierships are the method of measuring coaching success. I would say that Paul Roos has been the premier coach in the competition for the past 5 years and he would get my nod for coach of the decade because of what he can do with his list. I could've coached the lions to a premiership with that team for gods sake, not that Lethal isn't an amazing coach just saying you have to consider the cattle on the park.

just for fun how does pavs stats compare to browns this decade?

and this brown has been stiff for AA selections thats crap, the stooges that pick these teams r massivley affected by media hype (where brown is like a hero in everyones eye) if he has a good year he will be in the team straight away even if he is not the best HF he will be on a flank (tredrea never got that luxury) i mean the selectors dont get the job because of their intellegents, roo was on it this year!

in tredrea's AA years he was the best by far

A centre half forward's ability should not be measured solely on goals kicked. And if even if you do, Brown averages more goals a game than Tredrea.

Except all-up Tredders has maintained his averages for a lazy 64 games - or almost three full seasons - longer.

Tredrea career: 248 games, 539 goals = 2.17 goals per game
Brown career: 184 games, 423 goals = 2.29 goals per game

In terms of the decade (2000-09), Tredders played the equivalent of over one full season more than Brown.

Tredrea decade: 210 games, 466 goals = 2.21 goals per game
Brown decade: 184 games, 423 goals = 2.29 goals per game
