I havent started a thread on here before, so go easy on me; I would like to hear what others think....

@ the GFC 2008 Season Launch, Mark Thompson addressed years past and years ahead, RE: Recruiting strategy and policy.

He noted that the club has only 3 players recruited/ traded on the current list from other clubs, Tom Harley (1 game for Port), Cam Mooney (10 with Nth Melb) and Brad Ottens (150+ with Tigers).

In addition, Thompson noted that whilst he is at Geelong, the clubs focus will be on drafting the best suited young players in the comp and bring them up as "our" players, whilst claiming Tommy and Moons as our own!!! :thumbsu:

Also, he noted that he will never be involved in trading to get the "best" player around....

In summary, IMO, this is the policy that has made us the club we are today.

THE BEST!!!!

Agreed mate :thumbsu:.

It certainly fits heavily with the whole 'we are Geelong' tag line the Club and us as supporters embrace.

By having so many players play together for so long, it creates that unity which money can't buy (i.e. a champion team) and the dividends were more than evident last year...and hopefully again this year.

:thumbsu:

Good to see..

Number 1 Draft pics do not Equal Premierships...

Otherwise Carlton, Richmond, St Kilda and Hawthorn would have one. :)

He cried tears of blood when Moloney went to Melbourne in the Ottens deal, Bomber hates trading players. Having said that he's done pretty damn well with his trades so far - a lot of the guys that would have been traded at other clubs are still with us, the guys we've gotten rid of haven't exactly set the world on fire. Street, Spriggs, Kingsley are three names that spring to mind, there are a bunch of others of course though too.

The man is a genius when it comes to putting a quality list together.

He's not solely responsible for it.
Stephen Wells has had as much, if not more, to do with it that Bomber.
And I'm sure there's a number of other people that have contributed...

But he has a big part of it, being coach and all. Not discounting the others involvement though.

Agreed, Wells and his team have done an amazing job on draft day right back to '99 when this list first started to be assembled.

Clearly I'm biased (and it is easy to say with the '07 flag secured) but GFC's ability to find quality with picks from the mid-twenties onwards is a big contributor to the success last year.

I could select a gun with a top 10 pick, I couldn't pick one with a pick in the 40s to 60s yet Wells and co. found Egan (62), Enright (47), Ling (38), Gamble (47), Hunt (44) and Stokes (61) down there.

Realise all clubs have these sorts of stories but I firmly believe GFC is one of the best at finding those uncut diamonds.

Spot on. I remember reading that at the time Stokes was drafted, Bomber wasn't too keen on him. Bet he's glad we drafted him now. :thumbsu:

Even picking Mackie at number 7. Most people said at the time that was one out of left field. In hindsight, it was a brilliant move.

I remember that quote about Stokes as well. :D

Sometimes when Thompson talks about Stokes I get the feeling he is talking with a mouth full of humble pie because of it.

When I heard GFC grabbed Stokes I personally was wrapped. Following Woodville-West Torrens pretty closely in SA I knew how good this guy potentially could be. He was such a massive upgrade on Thurley it beggars belief.

Oh cOze - great AV :thumbsu:

I really don't buy this 'we don't trade' argument. Apart from the fact they've left off David Johnson from the list of traded players, there have been plenty of traded players in bombers time, Brent Grigc, David Haynes, Kent Kingsley, Joel Reynolds, Sam Hunt to name few. Plus what about Ottens? Is Bomber saying that with the benefit of hindsight, he wouldn't go back and do the Ottens trade? Have other recent successful teams such as WCE done more trading than us?

Probably because he's not a traded player. He was on Essendons Rookie List, but we picked up late in a draft.

Maybe they've just changed their policy on it.
Not to say they haven't done it but I think, as a whole, the club hasn't relied on trading for players to rebuild it's list like clubs such as Carlton & Richmond have recently done...

He certainly tried it early in his tenure at Geelong. Mooney, Kingsley, Mitchell White, and Justin Murphy were all in his first 2 drafts (I think). And obviously Ottens in the 2004 draft. I had a Geelong official tell me face to face that Brent Grgic was absolutely not a factor in that particular trade (Bizzell to Melbourne). What mattered was obtaining the draft pick to get James Kelly. The rest was immaterial.

The impression I've picked up from various interviews, was that the White trade really formed Thompson's opinion since. Hence why he offloaded Moloney through clenched teeth. Now they've developed a strong enough list, I guess he's decided they'll avoid it altogether.

He said on the night that he didnt think that Ottens was a top line player, he was a quality player that fitted in with what we needed.
