Carlton has included three players into its 25-man squad to play Essendon at the MCG on Sunday.
The Blues have named, Mark Austin, Steven Browne and Darren Pfeiffer on the extended interchange bench.
Earlier in the week Brett Ratten highlighted having a reasonably settled 22 as one of the reasons for wins over Port Adelaide and Collingwood. But he says the club still needs to get a number of games into its younger players.
“It’s a tough one; we need to get games into our younger-type players to give them experience,” Ratten said.
“That’s been the pleasing aspect as we go along, maybe earlier in the year we might have given some free games away to players to get that experience, but now you’ve really got to earn your stripes to get into this team,” he said.
The interchange bench will be reduced to four on Friday evening.

Blues include three

In: Austin, Browne, Pfeiffer
Out: None

Good to see the kids included.......again :thumbsu:

All 3 would be extremely close to getting a game.

All 3 inclusions are on the bench, but not sure what will happen.

Bench: Bentick, Wiggins, Grigg would have to be definites to play unless Grigg is still troubled by his ribs which I doubt.

The last spot is up for grabs expecially if Hampson is dropped as many seem to think.

I'd be happy if any of the 3 are included as they all represent the future of the Carlton Football Club.

i know it doesn't mean much these days but waite named forward seems like a good move!

maybe browne in vs the bombers pace

bentick wiggins and grigg going nowhere from that bench (unless grigg isnt fit from last which would be unlikely), so the only answer is going small rather than hammer for one of fife and browne

Looks a competitive unit.

Ratts may feel that Thornton can handle McPhee, freeing Waite to go forward. Has me a little nervous, as McPhee has shown glimpses in recent weeks. Lucas close to goal is another interesting one...Setanta will no doubt go to him, and Jamieson will hopefully continue where he left off last time on Lloyd.

Neagle up forward leaves us one tall short in defense, and im tipping Austin will make his 08 debut. Failing that Russel may have to go back.

Interesting to see who Gibbsy goes to...with a couple of big name scalps in recent weeks he would have to be set for a big job. Both Stanton and McVeigh have been named off the HBF, perhaps signalling Knights more defensive mindset, but I think he will end up on one of them.

Watch for Welsh to go with Judd or Murphy. He did a gret job on Priddis last week, I was actually pretty impressed with him.

Up forward Waitey has to work hard up the ground so Fev has a few acres to lead into. I can't see that Essendon have anyone to go with him. The Dons are also lacking a tall down back to cover Kruez. Pears will likely get a call up...I'm actually surprised big Mal wasn't amongst the in's.

Anyway the game is one and lost in the midfield, and I just can't see them matching us. If we can take care of the few dangerous floaters they have in Lovett, Lovett Murray and McVeigh, and Cam can match it with Hille, we should get away with a five goal win.

If they are actually going to play Stanton across HB, I would love to see Gibbs go to him and make him accountable going the other way.

Not being cocky but anyone else think welsh has NO chance against firstly Judd but then Murphy?? I think if we had Welsh in our team he would no way get a gig in the middle.

Re: Blues include three

For us,

IN: Lovett, Pears, Dyson
OUT: Nil

I'd expect Atkinson to drop out for Lovett.

The other two may not play, but undoubtedly someone will do an ACL making toast before the game, knowing our luck, so they may get a run.

Welsh will go to Stevens IMO. He did a very good job on Mitchell and a good job on Priddis last week. I think McVeigh will go to Judd.

Good to see Mark Austin in the squad again, good mate of Gibbsy and gives us that extra option in the backline if needed.

I recon Michelle will come in for Hammer
I'm not sure if we will make any changes to the side or our defence.

Wiggins is playing Pfeiffer's position and his and Russell's improved form is the reason Pfeiffer isn't getting a game.

Cloke or Kreuzer might play forward to allow Waite to play down back.

Hopefully we smash that mongrel Lovett with a nicely timed bump to the head.

Re: Blues include three

I wouldn't be so quick to drop Hampson. He has a very big future for us. But if he really needs a break, I'd pick Browne. - A quality youngster that we should look to fast-track. Austin deserves a game so bad it's ridiculous, but how do you squeeze him in with O'hAilpin, Jamison, Waite, and Thornton all in the backline?

You move Waite up forward and give a ruckman a rest maybe? Personally i feel Kreuzer Hammo and Cloke are working well together so i wouldn't change that combination, but there is always that option.
