Who should get the Franklin match up round 1? Rutten normally takes Roughead but I'm just not quite comfortable seeing Davis take Buddy.

Round 22 last year against the Saints Riewoldt was just too good for Davis, outmarked him, better when the ball hit the ground. There were a couple of times the ball came into them one on one and Riewoldt was just too strong for him, made it look easy. Luckily for Phil and for us his goalkicking that day was comparable to a 12 year old girl trying Auskick for the first time otherwise it probably would have cost us the game.

It's all to be expected from such an inexperienced player coming up against a star like Riewoldt but I think these sorts of players will give us more trouble this year than they have in the past.

Just something that we haven't really had to worry about for a while with Bock and Rutten holding the defensive posts.

Let Davis at him I reckon. Put confidence in the kid and let him go to work. At the very least he'll learn a few things. Can always swing Stevens or Otten onto Buddy if philth gets a bath.

I'm more worried about Rutten on Roughie. I'd almost switch them to be honest. Roughie always seem to trouble Rutten.

Don't wonder - find out.

It's round 1. Were plugging him as our next CHB - let him play on buddy and prove himself and learn a little. Stevens probably first in line if Buddy proves too much to handle for him.

Not like its a sudden death final where we shouldn't be letting someone learn by staying on Buddy the whole game.... ;)

But we do need a CHB right now more than a CHF.
Play him, let him learn, then swing him forward for a few games this year to see how he's traveeling.
Next year we can think about bringing through another player - especially if we lose Tex ;)

Who would your next CHB be after Davis? (ignoring Stevens given he probably won't be around in a few years).

Talia?

Would we ever play Rutten on Buddy? I think it's at least worth considering. I know Rutten is giving away inches and speed, but I still think he could hold his own.

I wouldn't think so SP, unless Truck takes him when he is inside 50 and switches out with Stevens/Davis when he leaves the 50 to go roaming up the ground. Inside 50 I would be comfortable with Rutten on him but once Buddy starts roaming up the ground it would be time to switch it up and let Truck stay at home closer to goal.

Some murmurings recently of Otten being better placed across half back where we know and love him. My question is that if he does move back there, does our defence with Stevens Rutten and Davis already there become too top heavy?

Or does Andy's versatility take him away from being considered another tall, to a run and carry defender?

I tend to think he is capable of taking a running role and the 4 of them are ok. Thoughts?

Andy would provide run from HB. Though if he's moved the HBF, it may well be due to other player not being able to provide that run?

Would like to see him in the middle as well though.

Davis should get first crack at Buddy

However for what its worth, if this match up goes pear shape I would consider Hendo for the job.

I know that Hendo does give away 6-7cm however this is not an issue for this particular match up, reason being, Buddy does not take too many over-head marks due to his shoulder issues

the key to the Buddy match up is speed and work rate, Hendo is about the only player on our list who can not only match Buddy in this area but beat him

We managed OK with Otten, Stevens, Bock & Rutten in 2009. What difference do you think substituting Davis for Bock will make?

If memory serves me correctly Bock missed a reasonably amount of games in 2009.

However assuming that set of 4 play, Bock's run gives it a less cumbersome look. Davis is well advanced defensively but does not give a lot of run and carry at this stage.

I like your thinking, but Hendo is still getting used to the physicality of the game. Work-rate wise he'd be all over Buddy, but physically, Buddy would smash Hendo.

physicality, what physicality

Buddy is an exceptional player however I don't view Buddy as someone that plays a physical style, if it was Brown I would tend to agree with you

IMO Buddy's strength is more to do with working the space in front of him with his speed and work rate and this is where I see Heno as a good match up for Buddy

Hendo is an attacking play, Buddy would monster him.

I like the way in which you're approaching this, and it's good to make Buddy accountable as he gets frustrated and lazy, but Hendo would be in a world of struggle to defend Buddy.

Interesting idea. Id like to see it for a quarter - see how it works.

I know he's not ready yet but I think this is just the type of role we need Talia for. Got the combination of height, athleticism and defensive skills. Hope he makes some strides this year.
