I'm sure Slone will be in. totally ripped it up against Freo and cemented a spot
You have Jacobs twice! I know he's good but....
I'm not sold on Symes or Tambling.
Otten at 1/2 back for sure

Yes I do.

I agree Otten is best at HB rotating as a defensive mid.

Scratch Matches over, my side...........

Symes Rutten Stevens
Smith Davis Johncock
Mackay VB Hendo
Porps Walker Knights
Danger Tip Smack

Jacobs Vince Thommo

Bench, **** this too hard. I am so glad I dont have this job.
Maric Sloane, Martin, Jacobs, Tambling, Jaensch, Otten are all guys I want in that best 21.5.

Few changes for me on that.

Johncock Rutten Stevens
Otten Davis Martin
Mackay Thompson VB
Vince Tippett Knights
Porplyzia Walker McKernan
Jacobs Douglas Dangerfield
Henderson Doughty Sloane sub: smith

immediately after richmond game thoughts...

B: johncock rutten stevens
HB: doughty davis otten
C: symes thompson mackay
HF: knights tippet henderson
F: dangerfield walker vanberlo

R: maric douglas reilly
B: porplyzia vince sloane
Sub: (mckernan)

Emg from martin, jaensch, tambling, smith

Will have a go...

B: Johncock - Rutten - Petrenko
HB: Doughty - Davis - Otten
C: Tambling - Thompson - Van Berlo
HF: Dangerfield - Walker - Knights
F: Porplyzia - Tippett - Callinan

R: Jacobs - Vince - Douglas
I: Mackay - Reilly - McKernan
S: Moran

Players missing out are:

Stevens - misses out because Otten is a quicker third tall option that can hurt the opposition more with his run and carry. On team balance we don't need Otto in the midfield yet.

Symes - is fighting it out for the same sort of spot as Doughty/Tambling, and I have them in front of him at the moment.

Hendo - starts in the SANFL because I expect/hope that Knights will pass him as a HFF option before round 1. If not then they're a straight swap.

Jaensch - only missing out on team balance, will get opportunities.

Maric - coin toss between him and Jacobs. I have Moran as the sub because he offers greater versatility and I'm hoping McKernan continues his form to provide the back-up ruck option.

Martin - same deal as Jaensch. Either of these guys (or Symes) could be a swap for Tambling if he really stinks up the rest of the NAB Cup/Challenge.

Sloane - shit, can't believe I couldn't find a spot for him...might have to rethink this team. Maybe could pass Reilly at some point as a tagger???

Smith - really wanted to get him in too, but not just yet.

Sellar - seems a long way off now after McKernan's performance last night.

Young - could easily have him as the third tall defender if we go with Otto in the midfield.

Hard to see guys like Stevens and Symes missing from the first 22 but I'd leave them out to make them earn their spots and to give the younger guys a chance of making a spot their own.

I love the competion for spots that comes from a fit and healthy list, I could not have imagined leaving some of these guys out before I started constructing the 22

And the final version (assuming no more injuries)...

B: Johncock - Rutten - Stevens
HB: Doughty - Davis - Van Berlo
C: Henderson - Thompson - Otten
HF: Sloane - Tippett - Knights
F: Porplyzia - Walker - Dangerfield

R: Maric - Vince - Douglas
I: Mackay - Reilly - McKernan
S: Tambling

Would love to get Jaensch into that team, just can't see it.

I've caved to the conclusion that Stevens will be in the team, despite Otten being more that capable of doing his role while being a far more flexible player

If Symes (the slug in both mind and body) can break into that team then I'll eat my hat. Martin will shoot past him when recovered, and I'd have Smith ahead of him too. Tambling has got a lot more to offer than we've seen so far as well.

Strong team with good players left out, BRING IT ON!!! :D

Tambling will play round 1. I am sorry if this makes the rest of you upset or concerned. Chin up, the kid is going to be a superstar for our team. More than you realise. This is his time to shine.

Sauce won't play round 1. Maric redeemed himself against Richmond. He has proven that HE is the #1 ruckman until Sauce or Moran take the mantle. The HAVE to earn it first.

That is all I have to say.

Jolly good how against Richmond. See you at AAMI in 2 weeks :D

I would vomit if McKernan wasn't named in the 21, would indicate Tippett doing far too much ruck work for my liking.

Was always convinced that he'd play round 1, but I'm not sure he's earned it above several others so I sat on the fence and made him the sub...

I think he has earned it after a pretty solid performance today, from the sounds of it. His attack on the ball seemed to be a feature, which is always a positive sign.:thumbsu:

Question, where is Petrenko? Missed the last two games after being very impressive in the first two.

In a real game his leadership is pretty important back there.

I personally am not fussed either way. Just think Craigy likes him there for structure/experience.

In a real game his lack of pace and quick decision making capabilities is also far more exposed. His loopy, unpredictable kicking doesn't help either.

Probably take my opinion re Symes with a grain of salt, I simply don't rate him as a footballer at all. Courage and leadership will only get you so far...

Some things he said on Twitter -

"2 needles in the groin today, not exactly the greatest feeling. Hopefully it fixes me though, hanging out to play footy again."

"hopefully I'll be alright to play with eagles next week but no chance of playing rd1 seeing as I've hardly played footy this yr"

Injured, back I think. Really disappointed because I thought we were primed to unleash the double barrell with Pets and Stiffy in defence, the rebound would've been epic :(

Still don't like McKernan not being in the 21...too much to offer in terms of keeping Tippett in the forward line.

I reckon with 21 they will run one ruck man and three mid spares...
if the anyone blows up mckernan fills the void...

err tall will be the way to go with the sub... except if its a shitty day
then an extra mid...

I dont think you'll be able to run two ruckmen and get the rotations
done...

it will certainly be interesting to hows it pans out..
and how other teams go about it...

for mine a big man as sub is a lock...

Symes will play. He is one of the defensive generals. On his own he is not there. But our defensive units is a sum of all parts.

Please no! Just don't rate the guy. Good bloke and honest trier but no standout qualities (and several deficiencies) so has to be behind a bunch of others small mids on the fringes of the team (Sloane, Martin, Reilly, Tambling, Jaensch, Smith).

A piercing or some sort of medical procedure?

If Tippett, McKernan and Stevens are all in the 21 you could gather a handful of ruck minutes from each of them and have some fresh midfield legs on the bench.

I know NC has said it's unlikely that McKernan, Tippett and Walker will all be part of the same forward line but I wouldn't completely rule it out.

my thoughts would on the sub is purely based on coverage
should injury occur...

I think the key positions need to be covered first...
and mckernan is the most capable of filling the void there
espcially forward and maybe maric slotting into defense if
rutten or davis go down with mckernan taking the ruck...

if a mid gets hurt...NC will rely on the endurnce base of the crows
to get them accross the line i reckon...

how would others cover if say a key position def goes down early?

Drumm

I think that your pretty close however I'm not convinced just yet that both Jaensch and Smith have done quite enough in the practice games to secure selection, both have showed signs, Smith in particular has shown his class however both have probably played in patches.

I could be wrong however given Jaensch lack of game time today I would be confident that he may drop out for round 1 and I would seriously consider starting with Smith as the sub, with this in mind Tambling, Otten amd Symes may well fight it out for the last spot, by all reports Bling had a pretty good gaame today (good timing) which may be just enough to squeeze him into our round 1 side.

I also sense that the sub will likely be a running type of player rather than a ruckman or KPP, this is why I have gone with Smith

with that said, here is my prediction

FB: Johncock, Rutten, Stevens
CHB: Doughty, Davis, van Berlo
C: Mackay, Vince, Reilly
CHF: Douglas, Tippett, Henderson
FF: Porplyzia, Walker, Dangerfield
1R: Maric, Sloane, Thompson
INT: SMACK, Tambling, Knights (Smith)

Emerg: Symes, Otten, Moran

Re Otten, he started against the Dees like a house on fire however since he has been a little patchy, I just think he needs some solid footy under his belt.

At least we've got some good selection headaches. Unlike last year, where the only headache was wondering if we had 22 fit players to pick from.
