Are there such things in our team?

The thing that I'm wondering is when players are under presseure, there seems to be no system as to how to get out of it...eg kick long to the defensive flank or to the ruckman who leads that way...

And why the change when we get in front?
Is this player or coach related?

A team rule of a different kind is needed also. Dodd should have been dragged after reversing the 50m our way and gifting the goal to Gilbee after pushing him over. Harvey must crack down on this as the umps will always look for a way to ream us.

Same situation with Carr's knee on Ablett. We may just have got over the line the last 2 weeks with an experience JCarr on the ground. Harvey must crack down on indiscipline and unfortunately he has not done so yet.

A kick to Sandi would have been a good start after checking to see no other options.

We just could not clear the defensive 50 during that last 10 minutes. I sit at top of 3tier stand and had good view of whole field. There certainly wasn't anything open ahead by foot and the guys were trying to run and handpass to create an overlap to get the ball moving. Fatigue and skills let us down then. Bullies also flooded (or ran into space defensively) alot more than we did.

Having said that I think there were too few players with confidence willing to demand the ball and run hard to create space when the pressure was on. This always makes it easier for the guy with possession in the def 50. Not enough leaders when needed!!

Players just started freezing. We'd been switching the play all day but the Dogs went man on man and no one could get free to get that easy kick on the wing. And there was hardly any movement up the ground, they were just all clumped together waiting for someone else to do something with no one providing any leads or support.

But its weak-minded players IMO.

When the game gets like that its just good old fashioned footy. You have to play hard to win and you can't shirk the contest and hope to find a 'free man in space' coz its just not going to happen.

Instead of switching across the ground all the time just bang it long down the wing close to the boundary to the tall timber and get them to knock it over the boundary if they can't mark it.

Make sure there's guys at their feet, which there was, and fight like hell if it doesn't go out of bounds.

And just move it forward inch by inch if you have to, making sure there's numbers behind the ball in case the Dogs manage to break...

It's not rocket science.

I think half the playing group is just too scared to get their hands dirty and win the hard ball when the game is on the line.

I'm sick of seeing them kick and handball back and forth across the half back line like scared rabbits until someone gets caught holding the ball...

the guys in the middle just weren't working hard enough.

Adding to that, the umpires just got absolutely red hot on holding the ball in the last 5 minutes. it went from "play on play on" for the first 95% of the game, and suddenly we were getting ____ed by free kicks.

I agree. There comes a time when you just have to roost it as far as you can along the boundary line. If you can't mark it, or get the crumbs, get it over the boundary line and start again.

I'd also like to see us really pushing up when standing the mark. Make the ump call you back. Too many times we just concede 3 or 4 metres, which makes it easier for them to play on.

And get a tall player to stand the mark if it's a set shot on goal from 50.

And whenever it's a ball up or boundary throw in we should try to steal a metre or 2 of territory by dragging the ball closer to our goal.

They're all small things, but it makes a difference.
