Don't think there were too many injuries at all from the game. Spider has abit of hamstring soreness, so I think he'd be the only one who'd be rested.

I'd bring Bailey in for Everitt. Adelaide have inexperienced ruckman (Meeson and Maric) and probably a good way to ease him into ruckman his same age, with only one more year experience than him. Everitt pretty much didn't play against Richmond anyway, so we are really gaining a player if you look at it like that.

Birchall should get a chance in front of his home state IMO. Has been training well and deserves a shot. Big ask against Adelaide, but a good test to see where he and we are at. Ries to miss out on the larger ground. Birchall sounds like a guy who likes to run and kick the ball so York Park would suit that kinda play. Also on the size of the ground ... it should suit Buddy's style as well.

Gilham perhaps needs to get an opportunity in defence. Not sure who for, but would like to see him get a go. Osborne had a shocker so maybe he needs a week off, didn't really have a position on the weekend, and unless we drop Miller and try Ozzie as the small forward (which I think may a good idea for Ozzie at the moment) Gilham offers more height in the backline. Port supporters rate him as a defender when used as a third tall, just not enough weight for a key position player. Apparently very good season at sanfl level, so I reckon nows a good time to see if he's up to it against quality opposition.

So In: Birchall, Bailey, Gilham
Out: Everitt (didn't play the game anyway) Ries, Osborne

On Ozzie, I still rate him, but didn't think the game acceptable from someone of his experience. Needs a bit of backhand to get him on his game.

Wandered in from the Adelaide boards to see how you hawkers are viewing the match.

Plenty of enthusiasm for our youngsters at crowland, how are you guys feeling about yours? What matchups are you guys looking forward to seeing in the game on sat?

Be ready for a hard in close affair as Craigy seems to have the boys as hard at it as they were last year. The battles in close against some of your tough nuts should really whet the appetite for the season proper :)

I want to see Taylor really take over in the ruck with their inexperienced ruck pair.

I think the Williams matchup will be the best on the field, because you blokes have a number of players that could do the job, and it also shows us if Willo has improved more..

Id also like Rutton to stay the hell away from Franklin and Roughy so they can get their confidence up for the season.

I think Gilham will have to be called up. I think Adelaide will try exploit our lack of height through out the field, and I wouldnt be suprised seeing Thompson, Hentchel, Mcgregor and Perrie being rotated in their forward line, even seeing 3 of them up forward at once.

Biglands and Clark (more likely it will be Maric) should play in the ruck

Johncock or Ben Hart (if he plays) should line up on Mark Williams with Bock and Rutten taking Franklin and Roughead

Ben Hart, Jason Torney and Mark Ricciuto have trained all week and look likely to play:thumbsu: .

Well considering they are key forwards, it is a very strong possibility.

Andrew McLeod and Brett Burton in the forward 6 rather than Scott Thompson

i agree cshreuders, i hope bailey and birchall get a run. not too fussed about the team we put out other than that as i don't see us being a big threat to adelaide at the moment.
for me, like nightwolf, i'd like to see williams against a decent opponent this week and also see how our game plan and efficiency stacks up against a more fancied outfit. big jobs for roughie and franklin to step up against two of the better defenders in the league. will be a big test for both of them, keeping in mind they're only kids.

i'm tipping the crows by 4-5 goals but i hope we can get over the top of them if everything comes together well.

oh, and NO INJURIES.

^I highly doubt Ellis will play, his still way to light. I think Barker is eligible, but I wouldnt be suprised if they didnt risk him, Boyle did a great job last week so I think we should leave him out of the team until the H & A season begins.

Out: Spider
In: Murphy

Clarkson seems determined to win, so I doubt he'll play Birchall or Bailey yet.

and so he should be...of the 8 teams remaining the NAB Cups means the most to US. Not only because of youth and the implementation of a winning culture back into the club, but a good showing in the NAB cup (final/premiership) would go very close to securing Clarkson an extention to his contract; barring a total disaster in the normal season of course.

True, but with a 6 man bench, and only taylor in the ruck, could bring Bailey in for cover. Might not have to use him but reckon wouldn't hurt having him on the bench

Well we will have to anyway. Going into the game with Taylor and Campbell as the two sole ruckmen doesn't install confidence in me. Especially considering our midfield's heavy reliance on a quality ruckman to feed them the ball.

We got by the other day with only Taylor and Robbie against much more experienced opponents. Bring in a Murphy to allow Roughead to go down back and Robbie in the ruck or bring in a Gilham to fill in down back and move Robbie into the ruck.

I rated Bailey's Intraclub alot, but I wouldn't expose him yet.

HAWKS HUNT CROWS
By MICHELANGELO RUCCI
01mar06

HAWTHORN coach Alastair Clarkson is about to do his Adelaide counterpart Neil Craig a big favour, even if it is not his intent.

By priming his young Hawks to play to win in Saturday's NAB Cup quarter-final in Launceston, Clarkson will give Craig his first sense of whether his Crows have kept their defining hubris from last season.
Admirable in Adelaide's mindset as it grafted out the minor premiership was it followed blow-out wins with tough victories four out of seven times.

Now having basked in the homespun glory of a 72-point thrashing of Port Adelaide in the NAB Cup, the Crows this week get a new test of avoiding hubris amid being touted as the new Cup favourite.

Clarkson has promised his young, developing Hawks will be as serious as they possibly can against Adelaide at Aurora Stadium on Saturday evening. There is no safe fall-back position from Clarkson that his 14th-ranked Hawks are still experimenting, developing or rebuilding - all of AFL football's cop-out terms. They are playing to win. For Craig, it could not be better. He will quickly learn the mindset of his players against a team being wound up to win, even if it is "just" the AFL pre-season.

Clarkson, now in his second year at Hawthorn after leaving the Power's coaching unit, says he is not intending to waste the NAB Cup series which can serve as the ultimate lead-in to the premiership season for the unfancied Hawks.

"Our best preparation for round one (against Fremantle at Aurora Stadium) is to be up and going as soon as we can - and that means having as strong a showing as we possibly can in the NAB Cup," Clarkson said.

This, to Clarkson, means winning to create a new mentality at Hawthorn.

"It's important for the young players that they develop a winning culture," said Clarkson, who has emphasised the importance - and merit - in singing the club song in victory.

"It's fantastic practice for our players to learn to win again," added Clarkson, whose Hawks advanced to the quarter-final against the Crows by beating Richmond by 10 points at Telstra Dome last weekend.

"We really keen to indoctrinate that winning culture as soon as we can.

"We only sang the club song five times for the whole of last year and now we're one from one. We'll just keep trying to progress as far through the NAB Cup as we possibly can."

This must be music to the ears of Craig.

His Crows are getting a valuable early guide to their travel routine, another look at Aurora Stadium, where Hawthorn pushed Adelaide last season, and, most importantly, a genuine opponent.

Not that Clarkson is missing out. His desire to develop a new, potent attack with less reliance of undersize full forward Mark Williams is tested against the AFL's best-rated defence.

Clarkson yesterday maintained the moment for recent draftees Lance Franklin and Jarryd Roughead to step up is still premature.

"We hit a bump last pre-season when Nathan Thompson, who was a pivotal part of our attack, was traded to the Kangaroos and we put Roughead and Franklin in key positions prematurely," Clarkson said.

"It is still too soon for those guys to assum the mantle of key forwards, so we need Ben Dixon, John Barker, Simon Taylor and Peter Everitt to take the heat off these younger blokes."

it would be good to see Brennan get a gig but i havent heard how he's been travelling lately.
Has he been injured?

he didnt do all that bad in the latter part of last year, but if he gets a fair go and gets game time, im hoping he will show something, hes got talent and needs to show everyone just why we selected him so high in 02.

I'd almost guarantee all 3 will play out of the forward line at the same time all game. From a few years back where we were struggling to field a decent spine we now have the makings of a spine for the next 5 years with an extra KPP as well. Something that really excites us given we still hav gun midfielders and a crop of youngsters putting their hand up.

If you guys are lacking height could be an interesting game of long kicking by the crows and running the lines by you guys. Be interesting to see Rutten play on a smaller player actually....

Hawthorn will enter Ssaturday's NAB Cup quarter-final against the Crows at Aurora Stadium in Launceston without 2005 All-Australian Peter Everitt, who has been forced out of the side due to hamstring problem.

Defender/midfielder Michael Osborne is also out of the squad, but Campbell Brown, who played for the Box Hill Hawks last Friday night after injuring his shoulder during the pre-season is back in the squad.

Everitt suffered hamstring tightness during Hawthorn's 10-point win against Richmond last Saturday at Telstra Dome.
Hawthorn team for Saturdays match against the Cows.

Joining Brown as inclusions are three potential debutants - Grant Birchall and Max Bailey while Ben Kane, Zac Dawson and Tom Murphy have also been added the squad.

Former Hawthorn captain Shane Crawford and veteran forward John Barker continue to be rested by the Hawks.

Adelaide has added new 2006 leadership group member Jason Torney to its provisional squad.

Torney missed Adelaide's thrashing of Port Adelaide last Sunday for the birth of his second child last Friday while also recovering from a virus.

Comeback Crow Jason Porplyzia, who shone against the Power, is out of the squad with a quadriceps strain.
Porplyzia finished with 19 touches in his first match with the club since being listed as a rookie with the Crows in 2003.

Adelaide has added youngsters John Meesen, Richard Douglas and Bernie Vince to its 28-man squad.

The Crows will still be without several key players including skipper Mark Ricciuto (groin), Nathan Bassett (shoulder), Ben Hudson (knee), Scott Welsh (leg stress fracture), Michael Doughty (knee) Matthew Clarke (leg soreness).

Hawthorn squad: Jarryd Roughead, Jordan Lewis, Rick Ladson, Sam Mitchell, Mark Williams, Danny Jacobs, Chance Bateman, Joel Smith, Brad Sewell, Simon Taylor, Harry Miller, Luke Hodge, Nick Ries, Brent Guerra, Ben Dixon, Tim Boyle, Richard Vandenberg (C), Ben Kane, Lance Franklin, Trent Croad, Tim Clarke, Tom Murphy, Campbell Brown, Grant Birchall, Max Bailey, Robert Campbell, Zac Dawson, Clinton Young.

Adelaide squad: John Meesen, Kris Massie, Scott Thompson, Nathan Van Berlo, Tyson Edwards, Matthew Bode, Robert Shirley, Hayden Skipworth, Jason Torney, Ken McGregor, Graham Johncock, Ivan Maric, Chris Knights, Ian Perrie, Andrew McLeod, Brett Burton, Ben Rutten, Richard Douglas, Bernie Vince, Luke Jericho, Brent Reilly, Ben Hart, Rhett Biglands, Simon Goodwin, Trent Hentschel, John Hinge, Martin Mattner, Nathan Bock.

Field umpires: Brett Allen, Chris Kamolins, Martin Ellis, Shaun Ryan.
