Googled how many partners Dave Warner has had as a Test Opener...up to 10 now with Bancroft.

Rogers, Cowan, Burns and Renshaw are the only ones with more than 15 digs as his opening partner. Rogers easily the most, followed by Cowan.

Shaun Marsh has paired up with him 9 times, the late Phil Hughes 4 times and then it’s 1 innings wonders from Watson, Khawaja and Maxwell (!).

Any chance that the fact that most of these guys are cast in a role to accommodate Warner’s attacking style has hindered their own chances on making big runs and solidifying their position?

Mate have a look at the position Bancroft has got himself into while getting bowled by an ordinary ball on off stump on page 86 of today's Herald Sun. The only thing hindering Bancroft right now is his hideous technique mainly how he's moving at the ball and where he's trying to hit it.

And far as Warner is concerned he is someone who began as a limited T20 slogger yet by working on his game became a match winning test class opening bat.

No doubt mate - I didn’t so much mean Bancroft in that context - just moreso that it has been hard for a new guy to establish himself alongside Warner, who’s held his place for 6 years now.

Rogers is the only one to cement his spot, age 38 (?), and well and truly comfortable with his own game and abilities.

It's not like Bancroft has been consistently getting knocked over for single digits.

He hasn't made a big ton, but he's made a lot of starts and been involved in a few good partnerships.

I'd keep him for SA. If he's clearly found out over there, well then we can be sure that he's not the answer. Otherwise, he gets put back into the "maybe, maybe not" recycling centre along with Burns and Renshaw.....

Renshaw hasn't done enough to demand a recall, Burns isn't a long term opener, Cowan is no longer preferred at NSW and I don't think it's sensible to debut a third opener (would Harris be next inline?) so soon after Renshaw/Bancroft.

That means the selectors either stick with Bancroft or reshuffle the batting order. If it's the latter I'd rather move Khawaja up instead of Marsh who looks settled in the middle order.

It's funny enough but the most in form players in the shield are mostly openers. Marcus Harris & Jake Weatherald in particular.

Let's see...so far we have:

Bancroft: Dubious form, gap between bat and pad ala Greg Blewett, pokes and prods outside offstump

Renshaw: Tends to poke outside offstump

Burns: Plays too much behind point, plonks his front pad out, dubious against spin

Renshaw hasn't really picked up form and apparently Burns still has some technical issues.

What are Harris and Weatherald like technically? Could they survive testing examinations of their technique?

Burns I'd pick as a reserve batsman because he has Test experience and good FC form, but as for the opener I'm far from certain.

Do we just simply make Khawaja opener? It seemed to work the last time we played SA, but who then will be the #3? I'm reluctant to place Smith there because if he does have a weakness, it's against a seaming/swinging new ball.

I'd like to see them drop Khawaja, shift Bancroft to 3 and Renshaw to open.

Unfortunately nobody's form merits that, so I'd probably do a straight swap - Burns in, Bancroft out. Not a fan of Joe but what are you going to do? It's a shame Cowan hasn't been able to replicate his form of last season.

Moving Shaun Marsh to the top of the order is a numpty idea. Maybe if we had a middle order batsman beating down the door, but that's definitely not the case.

But then he will get on with everyone. And be 1 of the boyyyzzz. And get on with everyone. And probably be selected.

Or maybe Smith/Lehman like Clarke, Ponting and Waugh before can just pick the best side. Not hard.

Smith and Lehmann did.

Not surprised Bancroft has failed mostly. The guy barely scored a run in second division county cricket until his last match.

He's super inconsistent at Shield level too. Has 2-3 big innings a year, which boost his average and run tally, and con people into thinking he's scored a mountain of runs all season.

Alternative is to just stick with Bancroft.

5 and 82*
10 (doesn't count as Warner ran him out) and 4 (chasing quick runs when the side was 200+ up and should've enforced follow on)
25
26 and 27
0

What counts against him is since the Melbourne test he looked absolutely shocking. Take the Adelaide run out out and it doesn't look horrible. With no one whacking the door down they could keep him.

His big innings boost his average? I think you're wrong. I think his low scores bring his average down....

Need to avoid shuffling the order around, our batting doesn't have the depth or consistency too

I'm glad they picked Bancroft his form deserved to be while Renshaws didn't
But there is no way he is a long term viable option with a technique flaw the whole world knows about
He has had 5 tests , been ok but that's it.

Burns has the 'form' but again I think we just get much the same as he also has huge technique issues . We will get the odd good knock amongst frustrating similar dismissals.

Renshaw is the best equipped and best long term option . Fast forward to 2017 we need him opening back in England for us
Whether we go back to him now on really no form I'm not sure, but sticking with Bancroft or picking Burns in SA is just a stop gap

Dropping Khawaja and having an unsettled top order would be horrendous for us. With question marks over Renshaw's and Bancroft's form it would give SA an early advantage.

Burns has to be top of mind surely to replace Bancroft as opener, in great form at shield level. He's had his problems before but isn't the mantra of picking blokes in form?

Unless you want to blood another young bloke (Weatherald) in SA, then you take Burns, Maxwell and one of Bancroft/Handscomb as the backup keeper. It gives you flexibility around the lineup, but it depends on how many blokes you tour with though.
