We didn't refuse to select Judd. We considered Hodge to be a safer bet than Judd (Judd's shoulders were a big concern to Hawthorn and St Kilda). Hodge is doing quite fine for himself, thanks for asking.

Lockett, Dunstall, Hudson, Wade et al were all great forwards, but I would rather see Ablett any day. Not only was he a great player, he was also the most entertaining player to watch. He consistantly did freaky things that made the crowd break out in fits of lauhgter. I have never seen any player get that reaction from the crowds due to his ability.
To watch Ablett's skills alone was well worth the price of entry,
At the 1:10 mark of the first video, where he drops the mark then chases it, palms off a player then goals, how much does that look like Gary jr. The resemblence is stunning

So you are suggesting letting Ablett go had something to do with winning five premierships?
Had goose bumps while watching those clips. Absolute freak. IMO best player to ever pull on the boots. I was sitting about 10m away from him at Footy Park when he kicked that goal over his head while standing on the point line for the Vics. Defied physics! Wish the clips showed some of the bumps he dished out. I think poor old Johnny Gastev is still looking for his ribs from one of them.
Hodge goes ok. He's a lot better than Luke Ball, and may end up more durable than Judd.
Footscray have made far worse top five picks in recent years.

I was hoping for an Alwyn Davey highlight reel.
Umpires are reactionary muppets who have favourites and only pay frees if a player is well known or the crowd yells ball.
That first mark against Carlton is a telling one, Ablett holds his ground against the taller Hanna who was a big boy and an SOO and AA defender with just one arm when he's backing back. Hard to believe the Hawks let Ablett go around the time they lost Matthews to retirement and Ablett is now the biggest challenger to his mantle as the game's greatest player.
A shame a champion team always beats a team of champions and Ablett never played in a flag.

The Hawthorn teams of the 80s / early 90s were based of discipline and teamwork. We would not have won any more premierships with Ablett. Sure, the name Ablett would look pretty good in the forward line alongside Dunstall, Brereton, Matthews, Buckenara & Jarman, but most hawks fans would be comfortable with our 5 flags duning those years.
And he was not let go from us after 1982 for a lack of talent. There were other issues.
