The 2018 Superdraft revisited

I only saw a couple of his champs games and haven't seen many of his games at the gold coast but when he was drafted I thought he might struggle to adapt his game to AFL a bit.

Players who have great evasive skills at junior levels usually aren't able to do the same at AFL because there is so much more pressure and congestion.

I also thought his decision making wasn't great which is super important at AFL level. It seemed like he'd sometimes take players on instead of taking the easy option and all of his moves were so he could get onto his right foot. His hand passing and opposite foot seemed a bit below standard.

His obviously got great speed, agility and skill but I just think he needs to figure out how to apply that at AFL level.

That was the feeling I got from a couple of champs games so could be completely off track 😋
Drafted to the wrong club. Amazing talent but probably needs the right environment

Sounds like Richmond dodged a bullet there jesus that should be a shocking deal for his output

No need to worry about anyone coming for Walsh.

Everyone knows that Carlton will ensure the brown paper bags keep flowing to ensure their only high quality midfielder stays at Ikon Park

I have full faith in the brown bags mate dont you worry. Good thing the bags already got Cerra and Cripps to put pen to paper too, reckon theyll be alright this year and be fairly rewarded for the work at VISY

All that heavy lifting (both onfield and at Visy) might be asking too much of poor old Crippa's body though.

Well he wont have Jed Anderson beating him into a pulp every time he goes within 15 meters of the ball this year so i reckon he might be back

He'll have Hugh Greenwood instead.

And I'm sure JHF would fancy a big name scalp.

I guess you need to find a way to entice players to come/not leave a club who has no chance at success somehow

Yeah it happens at all the bottom feeder clubs. The Dees got Steven May over with the promise he could drink beers year round but once he got caught in public their attention suddenly went to chasing premierships. Funny how things turn out

Really, that is the best you could come up with?

We were already a finals team when he signed with us................

Jy played on Walsh because hes the only bloke on our list capable of doing anything from the middle
Haha there's definitely an element of truth to this even though Stephenson and Thomas had big games rotating through the middle too. Jy was unreal on Walsh that game too.

I imagine it’s a lot easier to entice players to clubs that are coming off prelim finals losses than clubs coming off seven consecutive finishes in the bottom six during 22 round seasons.

Its well known that most clubs schedule in the fourth year of a players career as the one for them to really settle in to their careers. A lot of ex AFL players have stated that the fourth Pre season is the one where you start to feel comfortable and mature in your AFL body and with your ability to meet the demands of the league.

This draft class is heading into their fourth season, and it has proven to be a ridiculously good class. Walsh in my opinion will be in the top 5 players in the league in the next few years. The King boys, Bailey Smith and others all look like stars. By the end of this season, we will have a real indication of where these players will be ranked in this draft. My thoughts on a top 10 rankings from this draft come end of season 2022 are:

1. Sam Walsh
2. Ben King
3. Bailey Smith
4. Max King
5. Tarryn Thomas
6. Jack Lukosius
7. Zak Butters
8. Connor Rozee
9. Isaac Quaynor
10. Nick Blakey

There is talent all the way through this draft, with a couple of premiership players already in there. Some serious pressure on others too such as Rankine, Chayce Jones and to a lesser extent Rozee, who plateaued throughout 2021.

Any other players that could break into this top 10?
Rankine top 10 & looks set for a huge year.

Reckon Butters will end up being the best of this group.

Not downplaying the quality in 2018, but the 2019 is looking like a real superdraft: in no specific order >

Green, Serong, Anderson, Rowell, Jackson, Young, Ash, Day, Pickett, SdK, Kiddy Coleman, Warner

2019 had more quality throughout. 2018 had a ridiculously good top 13, but not that many great players outside of that.

Collingwood have done alright out of 2018:
Isaac Quaynor
Bobby Hill
Lachie Schultz (hopefully next years gun)
