Ablett is probably the best but is he the most valuable?

Geelong would still be contenders if he went down.

Judd in my mind is clearly the most valuable. Carlton would struggle to win a game without him.

Roo is clearly important to St Kilda but I reckon Hayes is equally if not more important.

And they struggle to win with him

From a St Kilda point of view, I reckon we would be 6-3 without Riewoldt because he is so important to the way we play, and having seen Kosi play over his careeer, I think he would struggle to be the main focal point.

We cant replace Riewoldt the way Geelong can replace Ablett - they have so many good players who can fill his role.

Was having a few beers watching the footy with some blokes last Friday, and I threw it out there that Riewoldt would have to be in the 3 most valuable players in the league at present right next to Ablett and Judd.

Nearly got laughed out of the place and 90% of the blokes that were there reckon he wouldn't sneak into the top 5. Am i deluded, and the only non saints fan who reckons this bloke is unbelievably under rated?

He is just as impossible to stop as Ablett is and I think people underrate how consistent he has actually been for a few years now. I think those tears that time stop people from naming him the champion he is. If he had been in warnambool pub brawls since he was 15, and spoke like he lived in the outback, i think people's opinion might be different.

FWIW i reckon at this point in time the pecking order is:

Ablett
Judd
Riewoldt

Buddy
Cox
Brown

Nick Riewoldtt has been underated for 5 years any Saints fan knows how good he is. There may be players who are more brilliant but he is so consistent and is actually impossible to completely stop because he works so hard.

If I had my choice of grabbing any three players for my team, they would be Ablett, Judd and Riewoldt, no question. That just about sums it up.

Ablett is a hard one, probably the best midfielder in the game at present but how valuable is he to Geelong? They have been going pretty damn well without him due to the overall quality of the team.

Take Judd out of Carlton and it sends shivers up my spine. Look what happened on the weekend when Adelaide superbly shut him out of the game. We looked terrible.

I know that with Hille and Laycock down with injury so far in '09, Paddy Ryder has been super important to Essendon. Doubt we'd be sitting 4th without him!

Amazed, for instance, that noone has mentioned the likes of Kerr, the Cornes boys, O'Loughlin, Rioli, etc.

Agree. The term 'elite' can mean whatever fans want it to believe.

For me an elite player is one that I hate to see playing for the opposition but would love to see playing for my team. They're enduring, consistently feared, they worry opposition coaches, they take several opponents and beat them all. They present a real match up headache, they can turn the match on their own boot, they never give up, they are fearless, passionate, skilled and capable of leaving fans of other clubs in awe. When they retire they become legends.

James Hird, Gary Ablett (Snr), Wayne Carey, Steve Silvagni and Tony Lockett are just some examples of this type of player. These are the sort of players we should be using as a yardstick.
