The Academies - 2016

Here is how this whole thing happens. Lets call it Riverinaism.

Recruitment Manager get a bollocking from the Club CEO who had previously got a bollocking from the Club President for his recruitment decisions and blames the expansion teams and their allowances for his failures.

Recruitment Manager approaches his media friend (for argument sake lets say Callum Twomey) and politely asks him to mention that club's are seething about allowances and specifically the Riverina.

Twomey then pens an article about the rich draft bounty in store for GWS from the Riverina and mildly points out how some clubs feel this gives them an unfair advantage.

Twomey then continues to mention this angst in his weekly draft podcasts which he has curiously brought forward this year whilst also promoting the talent from these rich regions.

Recruitment Manager then approaches his other slightly less credible media friends (for argument sake lets say Sam Landsberger and Jay Clark) and asks them to mention that clubs are seething about the Giants Riverina allowances.

Clark and Landsberger then ensure they pen an article, mention it on Twitter and in a Podcast.

At this point the big guns get involved.

Eddie contacts his mates Jon Ralph and Damian Barrett and ensures they take the opportunity to whip up some publicity about clubs being peeved about the Riverina and Poor Mans Eddie James Brayshaw talks of his angst on the Footy Show.

With the footy world stirred up and angry Big Bad courageous Eddie comes out on Triple MMM and arrogantly pronounces that enough is enough and it is going to stop.

The lemming footy public get upset...the AFL get scared....and the policy gets changed.

This happened last year with the Academy Bidding System and is following suit with the Riverina.

It highlights that Eddie McGuire is the real CEO of the AFL and drives policy in any way that benefits his self interest. Pity it doesn't correlate with results for his team.
Which in turn weakens the GWS Giants over time, on field success is few and far between, membership stalls, the AFL keep throwing tens of millions of dollars down the drain, and the lemming AFL fan wants us kicked out of the competition as we are nothing but a burden and a drain on resources.

Makes perfect sense for Eddie to push this agenda as it may just see his Collys fight out a respectable 13th place finish year on year as his love-in with Buckley keeps ruining their chances.

Those off cap payments are called AFL Ambassador payments when you're in a non-footy state.

Non-footy states?

Female footballers Sabrina Frederick-Traub and Darcy Vescio will be joined in promoting some of the many diverse backgrounds in Australia’s Game by Brisbane Lions Vice Captain Dayne Zorko, Geelong’s Tom Hawkins, Fremantle’s Tendai Mzundu, Gold Coast SUNS players Adam Saad and Tom Nicholls, Sydney Swan Aliir Aliir and Western Bulldogs player Jason Johannisen.

The new additions in 2016 join existing Australia Post AFL Multicultural Player Ambassadors David Zaharakis (Essendon), Stephen Coniglio (GWS GIANTS), Paul Puopolo (Hawthorn), Shem Tatupu (Hawthorn), Alipate Carlile (Port Adelaide), Jimmy Toumpas (Port Adelaide), Bachar Houli (Richmond), Nic Naitanui (West Coast) and Lin Jong (Western Bulldogs).

Someone really needs to get the AFL to fix up their targeting.

On Academies, the GWS one is a farce. The Academies should be used to target non-footy areas to bring young talent into the game they would other wise not play. Heeney is a good example. The Riverina area is a AFL heavy area with kids playing the game. No Academy should have any access to it. Take Matt Kennedy, His whole family going back generations played the game. He has 2 brothers currently playing which he played with instead of doing the under u18's champs. You wont hear people say thank god for the Academy or Kennedy would not be playing the game. GWS should focus more on West Sydney and grow the game there.

Funny example with Kennedy. In his post-draft interview he reckoned he wouldn't have been noticed and would've just played the local comp with his brother without GWS. Sure, he'd play aussie rules but he never would've played AFL by his own admission.

Kennedy doesn't know what he's talking about, obviously.

The Academies are a massive leg up much more than the salary cap was. you need to manage it properly to get full benefit but the academy clubs should dominate her then next 5-15 years. but football clubs being football clubs not all the northern clubs will get it right. but those that do will be powerhouses.

the bidding system is another advantage it can be worked to advantage.

The Academies will give their clubs the ability to access top talent regardless of ladder position.

the should just no longer call it a competition and giveth northern clubs 40 points head start every game at least it would be more honest.

So let's put all father / son possibilities on ice until the expansion clubs can have a level playing field and have our own.

Fair?

How many interstate ANZAC day games has your club played in since 2000? How many interstate 1st rounds have your club played since 2000? How many Friday night games has your club played since 2000? How many additional 1,000s or even 10,000s do you get to your home games from playing local clubs?

On our board we found the below image very amusing... do you know what it is lacking for an "AFL" image?
VFL Image.jpg

I don't think VFL teams realise how good/easy it is for them... The league should really still be called the VFL.

God forbid if non footy states could draft first round picks from their own state. That is luxury only footy states should have!

drain on resources.

Like you're currently draining Victorian resources by outsourcing coaching, schooling and development of these kids to Victorian schools and TAC cup sides?

Once the northern clubs get to parity (40-60%) of homegrown talent with other clubs the academies will stop allowing players straight on to club lists. That's a given. Most of the clubs are currently below 25%, and were even lower before the academies. You're attacking a strawman with the 80% figure.
Adelaide has only 13 SA players out of their 47 list.
Tell me again why we shouldnt have an academy?

We can't force the kids to go to a school of our choosing.

It is entirely up to them and their parents what school they go to.

We have a football academy, we run, a football academy. We're not the Pyonyang Interior Ministry.

There are two million people living in the Greater Western Sydney area. Thats nearly twice the popularion of Adelaide to develop talent in. Now tell me how many if their top acadmey kids have come from this area?
None.
Great development work GWS.

Yeah sure, and that's fine for someone like Matt Kennedy, who's played all his footy in NSW and is an example of the system genuinely working, but how do you justify priority access to Will Setterfield when he's been living in Victoria for more than 2 years already, done all his schooling at Caulfield Grammar and played all his football for Sandringham?

I think the last time this came up I pointed out Adelaide as the one traditional team who hasn't realised which side their bread is buttered, and indeed would almost be eligible for the old retention allowance aimed at Sydney and Brisbane. You'd think they'd figure it out after Gunston, Dangerfield, Davis, Tippett... more? Kids don't want to be drafted interstate, and Adelaide is a great counter-example to those claiming it's a non-footy state problem.

Now that's just trolling. Well done you. I'm sure turning two million people into AFL followers (underway), helping promote and set up school age comps (underway), convincing kids to take part in those comps (underway) and training up those school age kids to elite standards (underway) is entirely feasible to drive to completion within five years of debuting. I'm surprised the AFL hasn't started a team in LA and NY if it's just that simple.

Because his parents choose where they send him to school.

Not us.

Or do you want to open up the debate on where parents choose to send their kids to give them a head start in life?

I'm sure there's a public v private schools forum in the Lifestyle board if you want to join in?

That logic tho.

Double the population, same amount of heads.

See, I too can troll.

Big life decisions that have paid off.

This year, more will make similar moves. One of them, Albury native Will Setterfield, 18, relocated to Melbourne at the start of 2014 as a 15-year-old.

He decided to leave the family home to play football in the TAC Cup for the Dragons and attend Caulfield Grammar while living in a boarding house.

“It was my move, really,” Setterfield said. “My parents didn’t really initiate it; it was really up to me, and I was keen to come down to Melbourne and see what it was like.

“Footy’s much bigger down here than back home. That was the main reason, and then mum and dad thought it would’ve been a smart move for the education as well.

What can they do. Only 1 in 5 players come from SA. You can't just pick SA players if there is no local player near there pick.

Should adelaide get an academy as well.

So he wants to be immersed in the Melbourne way of footy.

He chose to go to Melbourne for schooling.

Nobody forced him to be a part of our academy. Joining our academy, like joining a Melbourne school is purely driven by the individual or the family. Not by us.

Again...We run a football academy. Not the Pyonyang Interior Ministry. We don't hold guns to the heads of kids in our zone and make them join our academy.

And if Setterfield wants to move to Melbourne so much...Mate he'll probably request a trade at the end of 2018 to a Melbourne club and we'd have done all the hard work for ya.

So...you're welcome.

Yeah fine, I've got no issue with him being involved with the setup from his point of view, but I don't think GWS should be reaping the rewards.

1. Compared to the other Northern 3 clubs (which do all their development in-house through their reserves sides) they're putting in way less work despite having the 'easiest' zone to work with.

2. Having these gun kids play NEAFL for GWS or senior football anywhere else in the state lifts the standard for everyone else, which is good for everyone.

Their reserves sides?

How many games did Schace or Mills play for their respective NEAFL teams?

I know Hopper played for the GIANTS NEAFL team last year.

Is he procluded from your example?
