News The AFL want names on jumpers

People don't put names on jumpers now because the players don't, and people want to wear what the players wear.

It's why people buy a guernsey for $110 from the club shop and not $50 from kmart.

Names are just as much for media coverage or to be seen on a supporter guernsey as sponsors. It's a marketing exercise. It's no different to any other sport that has names on shirts.

As an aside, do you think Miami would sell as many jerseys if the jerseys didn't have James or Wade written on them?

Also, the idea that anything that changes about the game is a tragedy is really silly. By that logic we should go back to wearing caps and long shorts, remove the 50m line, reintroduce the flick pass and the drop kick and use canvas or wool guernseys.

Its Painful to read your posts in this thread.

Unless there is an extreme close-up

Even then it was extremely difficult, even in HD. For one, the white outline around the letters on the Brisbane jumper made them illegible from any practical distance, and two, you can't see the name properly in any lettering from any angle if the player has a GPS tracker in his jumper.

I don't even see many numbers pressed on backs either, the vast majority have a plain jumper.

Adults maybe, kids don't care one way or the other. The difference in quality is noticeable also.

This is debatable, I see a sickening number of kmart jumpers at games.

I don't understand you reasoning that because all other sports have it, we should. I'm no traditionalist, and i'm up for it if it looks good, but it simply doesn't. The rest of the world doing it is no reason for us to.

We already have one shitty 'marketing exercise' on the back of jumpers, which no supporter actually likes, why are you campaigning for a second one?

People who don't know the names of their own team's players will never care that much. They will know the stars, and they can buy the star's jumpers already. Knowing the names of the less flashy members of the team won't compel people to buy jumpers with their names on them. You have this facination with the thought that people knowing players names = suddenly wanting to buy all of their merch.

For the same reason that people raise "awareness" for a charity.

Marketing 101 is to get people talking about you. In the age of free agency, players want people to be talking about them.

It's not complicated.

Melbourne storm 1999-2002 had names on jumpers. Why did they remove it?! Because they realised fans didn't like it.

No they didn't. Storm wanted to keep the names, the league only permitted NOB for a certain period so the fans could acclimatize to the players. Once the period that was initially agreed upon expired, off they came.

Personally, they didn't help me in player identification one bit, and wasn't that fussed to see them disappear.

I always figured the rugby codes didn't have names because a number refers to a position, doesn't it?

So players don't have set numbers?

That is true.

The game is already huge in this country. Names on the back won't get people talking about the game more. Names on the back won't increase a free agent's pay packet (not that any supporter should give a damn).

Yeah I'm sure David Beckham's ability to generate shirt sales had absolutely nothing to do with his enormous LA galaxy contract.

The same principle can be applied here. A star player who will generate interest and merchandise sales will be worth more than a great player without the marketability.

It's why Buddy will always be earning more than Roughy. It's why Dangerfield will always be earning more than Sloane.

Might have sold a few jerseys and made the Galaxy a bit of coin while he was there, but it hasn't really improved the standing of the game in the US.

I also wonder how many people in this country who had Beckham Galaxy jerseys still give a rats arse about the MLS now he's well and truly moved on.

It most certainly raised the profile of the club and sold bucketloads of shirts all over the world for a club most people had never heard of beforehand.

It was pretty interesting to go into a sports store in Adelaide and see 5 teams shirts for sale. Man U, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and LA Galaxy.

It was a huge marketing success. A success that just wouldn't have existed without the ability for the Galaxy to put Beckham's name on their shirts.

Does that sports store still sell Galaxy shirts? I bet not.

I'm not sure what your point is.

All I'm providing is clear evidence that a name on a shirt generated a crapload of merchandise revenue and worldwide awareness for a sporting club.

Yep, and as soon as he left they have sunk back into obscurity.

At least what we're establishing here is that people who like the idea of NOB in this country are happily supporting what is nothing more than a blatant cash grab.

Well yes there's that, and also the fact that I like the idea of having my favourite player's name on my guernsey.

I mean I also pay $110 for an official ISC guernsey with sponsors from the club shop. I could have gone and bought a $50 one from kmart but I want to buy the real thing and put some money into my club.

You can also buy a player issue jumper from the club during the course of the year, often for less than a retail. That's exactly what the players wear on the field.
