The clubs make about $50 per jumper they sell, and $4 from every jumper every other retailer sells.I like the idea of names, but they should only do it if they make them bigger and get rid of back sponsors so the jumpers don't look overcrowded, and they could only do that if the increased revenue from named jumper sales would offset the loss in sponsorship revenue.
Sponsorship of jumpers is $3 Million a year at Essendon, probably less at Melbourne.
However, that's a truck load of jumpers to sell to make up even $1 Million in a sponsorship.
Just another grab for cash from the AFL that does nothing to add to the game, only to their pockets, so they can promote their own ability to run a business, when in actuality it is supposed to be a recreational past time enjoyed by the masses.
Actions like this really only move the game further from the reach of the average punter, who has a certain amount of money to spend each year.
What it means is mum and dad will buy a new jumper for little Johnny, every time his favorite player leaves on Free Agency, but they won't have money left over to go to games. Though they will probably get Foxtel, so the AFL won't care about that.
