News The AFL want names on jumpers

I like the idea of names, but they should only do it if they make them bigger and get rid of back sponsors so the jumpers don't look overcrowded, and they could only do that if the increased revenue from named jumper sales would offset the loss in sponsorship revenue.
The clubs make about $50 per jumper they sell, and $4 from every jumper every other retailer sells.
Sponsorship of jumpers is $3 Million a year at Essendon, probably less at Melbourne.
However, that's a truck load of jumpers to sell to make up even $1 Million in a sponsorship.

Just another grab for cash from the AFL that does nothing to add to the game, only to their pockets, so they can promote their own ability to run a business, when in actuality it is supposed to be a recreational past time enjoyed by the masses.
Actions like this really only move the game further from the reach of the average punter, who has a certain amount of money to spend each year.
What it means is mum and dad will buy a new jumper for little Johnny, every time his favorite player leaves on Free Agency, but they won't have money left over to go to games. Though they will probably get Foxtel, so the AFL won't care about that.

The reason names are on jumpers has nothing to do with the game.
It has to do with merchandise sales.

If I buy a New England Patriots jersey, with #75 on it, it comes with WILFORK on the back.
If Wilfork hadn't re-structured his contract and re-signed, he wouldn't play for the Patriots.
So I would have a jersey that has an ex-player's name on it.
Most fans don't want that, so they go buy another jersey with a current player's name on it.

The AFL are banking on the same thing happening in their merchandise sales.

Except you don't buy AFL replica guernseys with numbers on them, so adding the name won't change much for the retails.

I'm all for having names on the back but I think the execution was poor. Names seemed too small and the font a bit too bold.
I'd be interested to see how the designers on this forum would approach it.

Now that we've concluded it's all about the money, I gotta ask, why are you such a staunch defender of the idea El_Scorcho ? It's just more dosh for the AFL. Doesn't do anything for the fans.
Try telling that to the people who like the idea.

The asthetics just don't work the same in AFL as they do in the EPL or US sports.

There's so much more room for these things on a shirt, I could see it working if the AFL moved towards sleeved tops instead of guernseys, but it just doesn't fit, especially with the back sponsors and the big numbers.

Mero very very well said I agree 100%

As I've said all along if the afl wanted to distinguish players they would add numbers to the front.
I love the little numbers on the chest look in the TAC Cup.

I mainly get worked up about some of the more ridiculous arguments against it. IMO it's a good thing and Iike it and it's about time.

I'm much more likely to get a number on my guernsey now that I can get a name as well because I feel like I'm getting a "Westhoff" PAFC guernsey, not just number 39.

But I only post so passionately about it because I see ridiculous arguments like:

- It's American
- You can't read it on the field
- It's against tradition
- It stops our game from being unique
- You can just use a record/smartphone if you want a player's name

I read these arguments and I want to smash my head against a wall because they are so stupid, but instead I post on BigFooty.

Those reasons are a whole lot less stupid than the reasons people like yourself give for it being a positive.

These two are it for me. You can't read it - there's no advantage in it. If you want the players name - stop being a casual. Casuals can and will always forget and or not learn the names of players, and if the name isn't readable, it doesn't help them.

I just get the shits that it makes the guernsey look uglier and it will inevitably happen, for no good purpose to the supporter.

Obviously a money grab. Trying to boost jumper sales.

Personally it doesn't bother me either way

Dylan8 beat me by a little. Been meaning to post this for a few days.

Sponsors on sleeves. More money for clubs.
More room across broad of shoulder for names.

Would be skin tight guernseys like today's player issues.
World problems solved. AFL and clubs get there money and we have to accept the changes like we do with the bump being removed from the game..

Looks absolutely ridiculous.
Why the hell did they add a white outline to the name?

This is where they keep it as just yellow.

On the contrary, I can't stand the jumpers with an outline on the number and without it on the name. The inconsistency ruffles me.

Well that wouldn't have been a problem if they got rid of the white outline on the number in the first place!

You can't read it at all.

There were plenty of times during the telecast of the Lions Tigers game that I could clearly read the names. When I go to games and every kid is wearing a guernsey with a name on it, I'll be able to read the names.

By the same logic you can't read the sponsor logos. Yet companies pay millions of dollars to have them there.

"If casuals want to know player names they should stop being casuals"

Ridiculous and totally naive as to how much the average person follows the game. Not everyone watching spends all their day on bigfooty and has a broad knowledge of the game like people on here.

Not everyone cares enough to buy a record or look someone up on their smartphone, but if they catch the players name on their back they'll have more awareness about the game and it's players, which eventually = revenue.

People who don't know the names of their own team's players will never care that much. They will know the stars, and they can buy the star's jumpers already. Knowing the names of the less flashy members of the team won't compel people to buy jumpers with their names on them. You have this facination with the thought that people knowing players names = suddenly wanting to buy all of their merch.

No one is defending sponsors on the back of jumpers either, I'm sure no fan wants them there.

As an aside, do you think Miami would sell as many jerseys if the jerseys didn't have James or Wade written on them?

Also, the idea that anything that changes about the game is a tragedy is really silly. By that logic we should go back to wearing caps and long shorts, remove the 50m line, reintroduce the flick pass and the drop kick and use canvas or wool guernseys.

The only time you could read the names was when there was an extreme close-up that showed the players back, 90% (probably more) of the game you couldn't even read them and that still doesn't help put a name to a face. The commentators do a much better job at telling you the names (even though they **** up often).

You've been able to put names on jumpers for years and I see probably as little as 1% of people actually doing it, it currently costs $19-25 extra for names and numbers (kids) or $21-29 (adults) at the WC store, I don't see many people paying that much extra for crappy plastic names pressed on.

Sponsor logos aren't meant to be read during games, they're there for media coverage (photo-shoots, pressers, etc.) while on the other hand names are supposedly meant to be read during the game.
