I'd like to see a back 6 that looks something like this:

FB: Hayden - McPharlin - Grover
HB: Broughton - Tarrant - Suban / Ibbo (swapping up to the wing)

Others to go back at times (ie when McPharlin is getting a run up forward for a bit) - Duffield, Mundy, Johnson. Dodd if we are desperate.

Grover should not move further forward than the centre circle, Hayden and Brughton can play swapsies between BP and HBF, as can Ibbo and Suban between HBF and wing. We really should fit Drum back there somewhere as well.

Taz looks to be a real keeper as a defender - was terrific tonight. :thumbsu:

Players who should stay the f*** away: Head, Thornton, Murphy (not a defender... but certainly not a midfielder either...)

Then I think we would have a chance at actually defending rather than have a bunch of blokes running around like blue-arsed flies...

What would others like to see in each part of the ground??

I'd also like to see Pav played up forward... why take a fricken awesome forward and turn him into an average midfielder? Other coaches and teams must be laughing their arses off at the thought of Pav getting it 17-18 times and kicking 1 goal... Get it to him 15 times up forward and he'll kick 5 goals...

Peake can stay in the forward half - HF/FP until Mayne and Ballantyne are ready to go. Johnson looks better up forward than he does down back these days... Solly off the HFF, Des off the other one when he comes back... And what about Drum? He'd have to be a better option than Murphy, surely...

Who else / where else?

id like to see mcpharlin in the forward line along with pav that gives us to very strong targets, murphy and campbell will never cut it as much as i would like them to.

my back 6 for next week would be:

hayden tarrant broughton

duffield grover suban/drum if there is a third tall

Pav playing in the middle makes baby Jesus cry. Such a waste.

But hey, who needs a 70 goal a year forward right?

Personally, I'd like to see them man up.

I think they need to do some sessions at the court though... to learn how to pick up a man and to back each other up.

I'd prefer to see Duffield running off that HBF instead of Broughton but other than that agree completely with IP.

Oh and yes, Mark Harvey, put Pavlich in the f***ing forward line.

FB: Hayden Drum Grover
HB: Duffield Tarrant Suban/Ibbo

That would leave McPharlin to play forward with Tarrant filling in the gap. He looked pretty good today and if he continues like this McPharlin/Tarrant swap will make us better overall. We all know that McPharlin can take a mark and taking the mark inside forward 50m is much more valuable than taking it in defensive 50m where usually a spoil will do and Tarrant looked pretty good at it today. Duffield was also really good today and above HB line would be really quick indeed with all players capable of providing the run off HB.

I would really consider playing Dodd as the defensive midfielder/tagger. He is one of our fittest players and I believe he would be well suited for that role.

Thornton and Head should be used as a last resort. We have to start moving forward.

I agree with the first post;

FB: Hayden - McPharlin - Grover
HB: Broughton - Tarrant - Suban / Ibbo

but the forward line should look like this;

HF: Des - Pav - Peake
FF: Balla - Murph - Drum / Johnson

Drum swapping out with johnson. Murph on his final chance playing FF for the first half of the season - he's the only leading forward we've got apart from Pav. Head should've been sent to the team bus after the first quarter - he is an absolute crab! - off to Souths for the rest of the season.

This might work. Though Sandilands would need to drop back after each centre bounce.

I like your lineup prattsta. You have more players playing at their natural positions than we had yesterday.

HB: Duffield Tarrant Suban/Ibbo

Spot one. Exactly my thoughts on the backline. Maybe Grover takes the gorilla over Drum though.

b: Hayden - McPharlin - Grover
hb: Broughton - Tarrant - Suban

The other players to rotate through the back 6 would be Dodd, Duffield and Hill. McPharlin has to play at full back. He is clearly our best tall defender, nobody else comes close. What is the point in severely weakening our back line for a slightly improving our forward line?

hf: Peake - Johnson - Solomon
f: Drum - Pavlich - Walters

We need to have an actual structure up forward, and for that to work Pavlich really has to be at FF. Johnson would play as a lead up centre half forward, while Drum would stay in the forward 50 to take the pressure of Pavlich. Solomon provides a lot of defensive pressure, while Peake and Walters would give us crumbing options.

When Ballantyne, Headland and Campbell are fit, they would all head into that forward line. When we have those guys, we can afford to experiment with Pavlich in the middle. But until then he has to stay up forward.

Duffield is a better midfielder than defender IMO. That's why I didn't include him in my OP as a "Back 6" player... although he is serviceable and can do the job if required.

I think you nailed it in the opening post IP, that's pretty much what I'd hope our backline looks like for most of the season.
I'd prefer Drum as a foward rather than a backman.

100% agree on all points. I would also like to see Johson play a fair bit in the forward line because he is a good mark and kick for goal (poor kick under real/perceived pressure in the backline). Also like to see drum play an extended run in the forward line.

I'd prefer Drum as a foward rather than a backman.
I am still not convinced Marcus is going to make it, forward or back. As discussed on a previous post 2009 has to be his year and last night showed he is still a long way off.

Wasn't sure where to post this, but here seems to do.

Did I hear right on the news that Tarrant wasn't likely to play beyond the end of this year?
