The budget woes will hit this week, by the looks of it. Is it any wonder? Some of these teams have been spending $10,000 to $30,000 over budget each week and not winning much to show for it. Ridiculous.

Right? They never really focus on budgets until they want to - you get the budget at the start of the week, then a sub during reveals on how much they've spent. And they haven't focussed at all on the fact that all the couples have routinely been spending up to twice the budget in some weeks.

I think it often isn't picked up until later into the build, until the trade bills start rolling in, and there's no money to pay them. The amounts you see on the screen each week are added during the editing of each episode, and that doesn't happen until well after the rooms are completed too.

I wonder particularly about the appliances. You know when they're using sponsor products cos they promote the shit out of them - but the norm and the expectation is even where there aren't sponsor products, you use top of the range appliances. You look at the kitchen for example, by the time you have a top of the line fridge, oven, stovetop and dishwasher, that's your budget for kitchen week gone. I wonder if the budgets just aren't a bit small, or if there is a heap of extras they're getting that aren't well promoted. (For example, they mentioned Samsung appliances a couple of times tonight, maybe if all you've done is given a washer and a dryer to each house that's all the advertising you get.)

Hard to get excited by a hallway. It's just a functional space. The WCs, mudrooms and Laundries (the ones that finished) looked great.

D&J deserved a win.

For places this big, they really should be allowed to hire some painters.
Or be given two weeks.

I love how the sell these places with the bed and bed linen that these grubs have been sleeping in.

First thing I’d be doing would be dragging that s**t straight to the incinerator.

What about the pillows and throw rugs that get the judges votes? 🤣

If im buying a $2m+ house im probably furnishing it all myself anyway and would get rid of majority of the shit in the house (kitchen appliances etc id keep, seems all top notch)

I had a thought that maybe the room spends we see at reveals also include the cost of the free stuff like Freedom cabinets and kitchens and the stuff they've got through their block bucks. If that was the case, then, in reality, the contestants may be closer to their actual budgets than we think. It would be interesting to see a breakdown of that amount.

The Block is totally unrealistic as a reno/home building show because of all the free stuff they get.

"the BIGGEST. BLOCK. EVER.!" ....... "but we're not going to up your budget, even in a post COVID world." (correct me if I'm wrong, but the budgets don't look to be any better than years gone by)

It's amazing that after all the years that this show has been going, the people who apply year after year to get on and some do. Others are put there because of celebrity or what not (which I think is wrong in itself).. yet I don't think I've ever witnessed anyone come on the show that had somehow done some prior research in to how best to manage the budget, plan for it etc. Perhaps they're not allowed to look prepared, the whole 'work ahead thing'.

I think there'd be merit in having a season where they select 5 groups, tell them exactly which house they're doing, which rooms in each week and give them several months of planning to come in and go bang (within a budget.) and see who can execute the plan better. The end result would be a better quality anyhow and would most likely result in a higher auction price.

Are the boys really playing the race card? If you don't want to look dodgey stop cutting corners and fix things properly instead of hiding them. Dont go off on the on the people pointing out the issues and then continue to ignore their advice.

I can understand where they're coming from. The "dodgy" tag sticks a lot more readily to "wogs" than it does to "skips".

Clearly it wasn't Dan's intention, and obviously that racial connotation is outside of Dan's lived experience (yours too apparently Ice-Wolf), but that tag wasn't "awarded" to Tom & Sarah-Jane despite the massive hallway defect, and despite their plan to just angle the last floorboard to meet the level of the adjoining rooms floor - which is dodgy as ****.

Oh the dodginess of most of the contestants has been pretty bad. The solution always seems to be whats the quickest, dodgiest and/or laziest fix you can find and not tear it up and redo it properly.

I only caught the clip of Dan talking to the boys and frankly it meshed with some of the work we've seen in their rooms this season a lot of it looks good on the surface but when you look at the details it's left wanting.

I don't disagree with you. At all. But as you say, all of them are dodgy - the tag just sticks to some more readily than others I think.

It is bonkers how much people pay for these houses despite all the defects that you can see on tv.

Does anyone know what the rectification process is between the end of the show and auction? I watched the first couple of Jamie Durie seasons when it it was a completely different show, but this is only my 2nd season back with the Block, so I don't know what that process is, either in terms of what they say happens, nor in terms of what actually happens.

Apparently they get real painters to come in and repaint alot, if not, all of the rooms - i would presume all defects get fixed and the dodgy work that gets done originally.

You would have to get pro painters to come in and fix it. Watching some of them paint leaves alot to be desired. Some of them are cutting in with mini rollers for goodness sake

I think O&O have a point about how the word 'dodgy' has different connotations due to their race. We live in a racist country, and using that kind of language on TV should be better considered. I'm glad they spoke out about it. When you consider what these contestants and builders must do within a week, none of these houses are immune from shonky work. House 1 (often promoted as the best contestants) was caught out last night with shonky work in their hallways. All of these houses will need fixing before the auction.

The shit will hit the fan tonight about budgets, I suspect.

Being called dodgy is now racist. Now I’ve ****ing heard it all.

Yeah they get trades in to fix up the defects that are still there or the poor workmanship in the period between when the build is "finished" and the auction.
