My 2 cents, FWIW...
I've been saying that the Brownlow is overrated for years. Largely just a bit of entertainment for people that follow the game.
Umpires are probably the last people who's opinions on the best players should be taken seriously. They are watching for infringements, and we've been told they are so deeply focussed on that that they don't even know what the score is or how much time is left.
Why then, do we give their opinion on who the best player was any significance?
It's just another award.
Having said that, so is the Norm Smith medal, so is the AA Team. They're both given by media hacks that we spend all our time whinging about during the year here on BigFooty!
But we give their opinions significance for some reason too.
These things are all just opinions.
I laugh how a player is better the morning after they win a Brownlow than they were the day before. It's just so dumb.
So I don't think the Brownlow needs to change. Everyone getting all worked up over it just need to change their perspective on it and enjoy it for what it is. Or don't enjoy it for it is, either way. It's an award based on the umpire's perspective on who the best player in each game is. That's it.
But... I do find it particularly odd that there are 4 umpires and they somehow form a consensus on who was 3-2-1.
That bothers me.
Each umpire should give their own 3-2-1. I'd even get the goal umpires to give theirs too. It'd still be an umpire's award, but you'd get a broader perspective.
