Roast The Brownlow has no credibility left

The problem is people have short memories. Almost half the Brownlow winners were never the best player that year. But because it’s been around for 100+ years, people just assume it’s prestigious with a few quirks. It’s not quirks, it’s the whole thing.
Yep. In the past we also didnt have tv coverage of every game and detailed stats to confirm our suspicions that a lot of votes are nonsense like we do now. Doesnt mean these problems werent just as big then though.

Yeah he was an excellent player. But he wasnt best player in the season category. Unless ofcourse you only look at ball pig clearances players. And thats the effing problem.

He won the Brownlow, the AFLCA MVP and came 3rd in the coaches votes.

I don't think he was an egregious winner.

Happy to delete him if you want. He aint the one im dying on a hill for. Note my original post wasnt responding to whether they were worthy winners like my latter posts on a different discussion point were. It was responding to a poster who claimed the winners are the best players in the game. As good as tom mitchell was i dont think he was ever in discussions of the best player going around.

I see the Brownlow as a measure of consistency. Not necessarily the best player but the most consistent over a long season (which is a skill of it's own).

Just so happens to be that inside mids are usually the most consistent - the ball is always going to be in the middle at some point. The same can't be said for defenders or forwards.

Bizarrely Atkins rarely even gets coaches votes love, which generally the less typical stars performing their role well will get. None for him on the weekend again.

I think he's just told Scott to give them to anybody else.
Really , he didn’t get any on the weekend ?
I thought he played brilliantly
BOG in my opinion

Brownlow medals problem is gambling. A fairer system is a combination of umpire, coach and supporter voting. This would provide a much more predictable result. Not good for making money.

I don't even care about the actual Brownlow medal night.

It's all about the hot young ladies with the skimpy outfits for me lol.

John Platten shared the Brownlow medal with Tony Lockett in 1987.

There was a game back in 1987, John Platten got 44 disposals ad somehow didn't get one Brownlow vote that game. I guess the umpires took him for granted.

HairyO , Strapping Young Lad , do you remember that game?
Why would you say skimpy dresses? Sounds a bit toxic male mate. Do better.

Tom Mitchell was bloody good before his broken leg.

I think his form after that horrific injury has tainted his legacy.

He was a fantastic ball pig, clearance beast who could burst out of stoppage and a two way running midfielder before his injury. After his leg break he really became a one paced plodder, didn't have the pace or power to get on the outside and relied on hack kicking the ball.
Mitchell won the MVP the year he won the brownlow and was 3rd in the coaches votes. Hardly and example of an undeserving brownlow win.

If you can only define the Brownlow medallist as being deserving based on results in other awards then the brownlow is meaningless. You're just rewarding the same player.

I like that the brownlow has a different perspective. I'm interested in how the umpires see the game given they're closer to the action than literally any of us.

People are forgetting that the Brownlow medal is the umpires award. Its always going to have , so called, anomalies. I don't have have a problem with them doing the votes, maybe they can review the games they officiate later in the week, minus commentary, and then lodge their votes for those games ( rather than doing them straight away after the game). That's the only adjustment I would make

What a joke of an award this year. Nick Daicos was BOG vs GWS and polled 0 votes despite having 35+ disposals.

The award is losing relevance each year.
This coming from the bloke who doesn't even know what a coincidence is...

I'll take the Brownlow thanks.

they were going to stop watching football if bailey smith won it, i think they’re a touch biased about their perspectives

That's what's so ridiculous about this current flap. Umps got it wrong - OMG who knew!!??? It's the 24/7 outrage machine that is exhausting and dumbing down all of us.

Either you accept the Brownlow, its methodology and the turgid annual event, or acknowledge that it's an arbitrary and flawed and any footy fan can come up with dozens of illustrations of this. Lachie Neale and Cripps are worth 2 medals, Dangerield 1, Bont 0? Buddy, one of the all-time greats, worth zero. etc etc

For the record, love Rowell and the way he plays his footy. He has a level head on his shoulders and is a worthy winner according to my feelings.

Still have NFI why people get upset over this.

The Brownlow is the umpire's award.

Not the coaches, players or media.

The umpires. It's who they thought was the best player for the season, not actually who was the best player.

It's been an inside midfielder's award for the past 18 years. It's why unless they're all shit one year, or Naicos develops a strong inside game, he'll be a perpetual bridesmaid.

He does have a strong inside game.
Averaged 10½ contested possessions as well as 6 clearances to go with it.

He's more valuable to his team playing in a number of different positions. Notably half back flank when they need much needed creativity.
