G'day you bloody echidnas! Australia is a proper outdoor loving country, and that makes sense when you consider how rich our fertile soils are with beautiful and diverse flora and fauna, and we have an abundance of beautiful natural scenery. So this is the thread to share your great outdoors stories or tips or advice or photos. Enjoy!

Yours in good faith,
Perthblue

where did you numbats go for your school camping trips?
we went down to dunsborough in year 7. i injured my elbow quite badly on an obstacle course and they made me finish the obstacle course before i could go to the nurse. and by nurse I mean one of the teachers who was not qualified to deal with my ailment.

built character though.

Did it a lot as kid, my old man took us across the Simpson Desert, and all around Bourke, and Wills country. I'm glad I saw it because it's a pretty incredible part of the world. Wouldn't want to do it again though.

Simpson desert would be unreal. did you barbecue up some frill necked lizards?

I can remember the names of the camps I went to Grade 5/6- Camp Coolamatong and Camp Cooriemungle (spelling might be out of whack)- I think they were down past Bairnsdale/ 90 Mile Beach? Absolutely loved them (accom was in cabins)- did horse riding, archery, canoeing, etc.

High School camps sucked ****ing ass cannot even remember where we went they were that shit. Just went bushwalking or low ropes crap.

The camps I've been on thru work have been ok- ranging from down 12 Apostles way, Mt Eliza and even the city.

For our Year 8 camp we went up to Sorrento which is just a northern beach suburb of Perth, worst camp ever.

high school camps were pretty bad. we went to point peron in rockingham. wasnt great. but i went again in year 11 as one of the peer leaders to the year 8s and it was way better. didn't have to participate in the activities and just got to bum around for a few days.

In Year 11 and Year 12 our school organised ski trips to the Victorian ski resorts but only the rich kids could afford to go and I wasn't one of them.:(

I bought all the stuff for camping but haven't had an opportunity to go in the last couple of years. I don't mind it every now and then if the company is good.

As for school camps we went down to Albany in primary school. Cant remember the place we went in high school. Somewhere near Byford way I think

Any good books/sites for fishing for absolute beginners?

Used to do fish (even sometimes successfully) on holidays when I was a kid, and it seems meditative and fish is delicious.

Forgotten everything about it though.

Just seems so complicated with all different lures/baits/set-ups etc etc

Last camp was a site that involved a 1.5km walk.

Too much for a man with an esky, blow up mattress, tent, blanket and a bag full of food, and clothes etc.

Organised by chicks who live off muesli bars and just sleep on the tent floor bare with no blankets.

Never doing that again.

Probably easier to google stuff. Just look up the areas you are interested in and see what can be caught and go from there.

Sounds relaxing.

Reading the conversation in the other thread that - I assume - led to the creation of this one was one of those moments where I'm reminded that bf is predominantly made up of city folk. I ****ing love camping/fishing, and it would be considered strange among my friendship group if I didn't. We'd generally organize at least a couple of trips away each year, and in summer take the tinny out in the local river most weeks.

My wife had never been fishing in her life before she met me, but she loves it as well now. Not for everyone obviously, and each to their own, but I'm never happier than when I'm sitting round a fire by a lake or river, rods in the water, drinking piss etc, talking shit... Love it.

Ern Halliday Recreation Camp. At least back then it was on the edge(ish) of the metro area, now it's just in the middle of the northern suburbs. About five minutes from my place in fact.

I'm going to the excitement of Woodman Point in a couple of weeks to help out on one of my kids camps.

Went to Nanga on the weekend just gone, good fun canoeing and rafting even though the weather was crap.
