agree re Levi and his ability to play many roles is a great plus at this moment, but plenty of other players shouldn't be automatic selections, they're very much replaceable.
So we play Levi due to his ability to play multiple roles, even if he's playing those roles poorly?
The arguments I hear are: Who else gives Pitto a chop out in the ruck? It's for structure. We're short on talls, etc, etc.
Ruck isn't as an important role as it has been in the past. Collingwood lead the league in hitouts. Saints are 3rd. Bulldogs are last and Swans are 4th last. Pitto can ruck all day, or somebody can just jump and create a contest when he rests. For the amount of ruck contests that he attends, and the advantage that we get (or don't) from those contests, you could use a combo of Harry, Gov and Jones. They only need to attend 4-5 each.
The other week was a perfect chance to drop Levi against GC, but he was important for structure or second ruck or something, despite Curnow and Cripps having a go.
He's not offering much as a ruck. He's not offering much as a forward. He's not offering much around the ground.

Hate my not be the best word but surely you understand where I'm coming from. Any time we lose the first person a lot of CFC supporters blame is Lachie when he has had a solid year. This myth that he turns the ball over is the biggest lie going around - AFL stats have him as above average for disposal efficiency + hes elite for intercept marks. Has also increased his no of possessions from last year and become more attacking. I guess I'm just frustrated that he clearly tries his hardest yet gets abused every time we lose.
Currently he is leading our club on disposal efficiency at 84%.

What people often forget when referencing Plow is that he generally takes the Opposition's best small forward & beats them more often than not hence why the Coaches/Match Committee rate him highly.

Is BJ on the record in 2017 saying Allen should have gone top 2 or is he just being a hindsight recruiter? Even then it is easy to say take a speculative pick early when there are no consequences in being wrong.
No he actually said it before the draft after doing some work with draft prospects.

How do you remember players like Rhys-Jones, Leigh Mathews, Wayne Carey?Would you have liked the last two at the Blues when they were in their prime? Would you have liked Leigh Mathews as a coach or coaching mentor?

I have my own line, I didn’t want Degoey for that reason, but Cameron Smith doesn’t cross it and players who cross the line in physicality dont either.

Where is your line?
where do you think any progressive thinking person's line is?

Really? think thats a bit extreme for where we are which isnt playing well and the draw we have in the next month with a rising brisi and in form doggies and melb i think 2 wins of the next 4 is fine .
Makes us 4-5 and considering our form and availabilities at the end of that month we have a platform to launch from with a better lineup .
Its a long season plenty to play out yet .
Of course all depends how fair dinkum our players are in winning football games .
Personally im not confident but that view is from what ive seen to date this year not what we know they are capable of if invested week to week .
We shall see interesting times ahead .

Which two? Do you think Carlton are AHEAD of Brisbane, Melbourne or Doggies ? Basically you are saying we are top 2 or 3 in the comp....

Yep, Mark Maclure is spot on. We don't have an identity and are constantly embroiled in off-field politics which ruin this club. Our player development is atrocious. The next month will be make or break. 2 wins out of 4 will not cut it.

How about you name the teams Carlton should beat in the next month since 2 wins wont cut it.

Brisbane ? Doggies ? Melbourne ? Or just Essendon....

Not necessarily. Beating the Cats in Geelong last year didn't mean we made the GF.

We've got a pretty good recent history against the Dogs with our last 3 being a 52pt win, a 3 pt loss, and a 44 pt win for an average of 31pts in our favour.

Brisbane have hardly been firing on all cylinders so far this season and surely Melbourne has to have one of those 'classic Melbourne' games coming up soon...

You never know.

Yeah, think he was wrong to say it's not a coaching issue
you can't coach focused aggression, you can't coach love for the jumper, you can't coach win at all costs mentality, you can't coach never give up ruthlessness, all these things must be internally motivated and if they require continual external stimulation then I'm afraid the group we have is the wrong group

What a strange comment that is.

Every year we see unexpected results, where the clear underdog comes out on top. That doesn't mean the winner on the day is ahead of who they played.

We've seen a few this year already.

No not at all at this stage but theres such a thing as an upset victory and they do happen from time to time .
We would all be hoping we could win 1 of the 3 youve mentioned and the other Essendon .
I dont think that is a huge ask if we are serious about improving ?

NAILED it.

Coaching/development...

Edit; I think Teague can still make some inroads this season by making some moves with a group of players in different positions, this could be defining for both the team/club and the careers of some of our players...
Make a stand and drop senior players that aren’t capable of towing the line particularly who aren’t part of the future...
Assistant coaches are on the chopping block big time...

It would obviously be nice to win more than 1 but I think most people here would be pretty happy if we went 1-3 with sensible selection policies and red hot cracks at all the 4 teams we play against. The despair and doom will surface if we get pantsed or have lack of effort. The win loss currently is less important than seeing the effort and system which we all know will bring the results eventually, even if we miss out on a few in the next 4. Trepidation is stemming from the thought that the team systems might be failing.

Good summary certainly will be interesting to see what we produce over the next month of footy .

Looking forward to it 👍

I remember being present 2 years ago when Sellers said ‘pretty simple really, we would get tapped on the shoulder at training or after training and told, you’re not playing this week as your effort was piss weak and it’s not what this club stands for. Do something in the 2’s to fix it or you will be there until the end of the year. Or we would sort it ourselves during training with a bit of verbal, nothing worse than being called piss weak by your team mates’...

Sellers was a great leader.

Not in sport. If you don’t perform, you’re out...

You will still get paid, unlike other work places but at the end of the contract/year, bye bye...

And if you would like to complain to worksafe, that’s fine but at the end of the year, you can **** off...

There are serious problems right now at Carlton and they are Murphy, Betts getting games when they should not be, and players out of position - SPS is so ridiculous its not funny. Dow's game structure is a travesty as is LOB.

Wait so when SPS butchers the ball by foot it's not because of a deficiency in skills its because he's out of position?

He'll kick much better in another position?

Dow's game structure? What kind of a fanciful excuse is that?

The players you've named are limited in ability is the issue, that's why they aren't performing to higher standards.

Hello all, long time reader first time poster.

I made an account for all the people responding to this so that I could point out that they should bone up on what "egalite" means. They will probably realise this person is taking the piss with this post.

Um ... okay. Err ... thanks.

No SPS should be dropped - as the article above also states - and many others are stating, correctly.

Yes, Dow is being played entirely out of position, and then dropped - not to find form, but to sit on the bench ? Yes Obrien was also played out of position.

SPS should not be playing in the backline. He’s two best games which he polled Brownlow votes and we won were in the midfield. All players butcher the ball, look at Dangerfield he’s known for it, it just stands out so much more in defence.

I’ve never been a Murphy basher but he’s no value playing forward, SPS would do better.

The article is pretty spot on, if your young you’ll get dropped, if you’re older aka Newens, Betts and Murphy you won’t.
