Not comedys by any measure, but my two favorite Austalian films of recent times were 'The Interview' and 'The Boys'. I've gotta admit I laughed like hell at bits of 'Wogboy', especially the bit where they realise the car they've hit is a government car and the uncle grabs his neck and says "Government car-ohhhhh my neck, I need compensation".
Maybe the fact I am a life long western suburban, ex public servant makes me see the humour in that.

Chicago1 did you ever teach at Footscray High?

Loved both the Interview and The Boys ... also recommend The Custodian.

I've got that one, grouse movie! Split Enz on the soundtrack. Jad Capelja (the blonde girl) is the only of the two girls that I ever saw in another movie, a pretty bad one called 'Freedom', with her and Jon Blake.

Easily the worst Aussie film that I ever saw was called 'Houseboat Horror'. A mates dad did the catering on the shoot, so he had his own personal copy of it. God it was an awful movie. We'd only watch it when we really stoned.

There was also a film I remember called 'Pacific Banana' showing when I was at high school. It was a poorly disguised porno about a guy with a problem ummmmmmmm..."getting it up" and whenever they needed a metaphor for his problem they would cut to this huge balloon deflating-very classy movie! Anyone remember it?

I've found the Castle in a local video store; it's not that rare. Showed to my whole family while my Aussie woman was over here last time and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it.

Saw the Dish, while over there this last time; out in theatres here now and am recommending highly to the family again. Will probably go see it again with them.

Road to Nhill is a corker (Is that the road to Nhill or the Nhill road?). It's that absolute dry Aussie humour.

Love Serenade is another hilarious Aussie flick. The woman who made it has recently made another film set on the Gold Coast. It was in the cinemas for about 12 seconds so I didn't manage to get to see it. Hanging out for the video now. Can't remember what it's called either.

Oh yeah, seeing this thread is about the Castle - love it!

You should open a shop darl.

No, local. At Avondale Heights High from '75 - '78 then moved to St Leo's College in Box Hill ( both are now closed... hmmm... ) Then went to Aquinas College in Ringwood '86 --'88. Went out to Perth in '89 but didn't like it and returned to Melbourne the next year. Finished at Parade College in Bundoora in '99. That's 25 years in a nutshell!

Lived in Maribyrnong on The Esplanade while at Avondale. In fact I moved there the week Highpoint opened. Used to shop down in Footscray on Friday nights back then. The good old 82 tram!

Mobbenfuhrer :

Believe it or not, 'Muriel's Wedding' was shown on a local Chicago TV station this afternoon. Didn't get a chance to watch it. so taped it instead. Saw it a few years ago. Next, maybe 'Home and Away' will be shown here!!! I think NOT!

... 'Houseboat Horror' ...

hehe ... 'Come and check out the view up here ... you'll bar up!'

I've got a copy of Houseboat Horror, but would LOVE an original ex-rental or such. Cult movie in my book. Alan Dale and Des McKenna (Animal the drummer on Hey Hey Its Saturday). Yes, it took place at Lake Eildon. Very, very, oh so very, bad movie.

... 'Pacific Banana' ...

I have an ex-rental original of this! Graeme Blundell, basically another slant on the Alvin Purple stories. 'It won't go up, up, up, up. It always goes down, down, down, down'. Another shocker!

...

Speaking of very bad movies (which one can love as easily as good movies) ... does anyone know of Outback Vampires? Brett Climo, Lucky Grills, and Rampaging Roy Slaven (John Doyle) as the chief drac.

Actually John Doyle has been in a few very bad flicks, Contagion and Rock'n'Roll Cowboys being another couple. He was also one of the commentators in Babe, and Greg Pickhaver (HG Nelson) has been in couple, too, 'Undercover' and 'This won't hurt a bit'. I haven't seen the latter.

My sister lived on The Esplanade a few years ago... but well after Highpoint had opened!

Back to the movies and TV though...

I presume some of you would have seen "Dimboola" featuring Chad Morgan, and also a film about an election, made around 1969 or 1970 (The Party?).

Very surprising how these films don't get shown on TV, as they were pretty entertaining. People over 30 or 35 seem to have grown up with Australian TV and movies, but those of us who grew up overseas or are younger, have no idea about the wealth of good material that preceded us because it never EVER gets repeated.

Pugwall... now that was boring shyte TV. It was like an Aussie "Parker Lewis Can't Lose" only it was really crap. A true indication of how crap it was, is that it used to get shown in summer on the days that cricket wasn't on.

Kingswood Country... unfortunately, it looks like political correctness has stopped this getting a gig these days. I can't imagine any other reason - it's the piss funniest show ever made in this country, along with the D-Generation (although a lot of their early material in the 1980s on the ABC would also be offensive to many).

Got both of these, Dimboola (based on a stage play ... and now a stage play in Dimboola, Vic) is often canned, but its pretty funny.

Don's Party, what a lineup, Johnny Hargreaves, Ray Barrett, Harold Hopkins, Graham Kennedy ... nearly as star studded as the Odd Angry Shot!

'I'm gonna sue you. I'm a lawyer.'
'I'm gonna knock your bloody teeth out.'
'He's a dentist.'

Favorite lines;

Dimboola(MC)-Ladies and gentleman it gives me great pleasure...(lady in crowd)-Yeah me too love

Dons Party-Gawd, Talk about coitus interuptus

The Odd Angry Shot-Eat it, or I'll rub your face in it.
Gramem Kennedy was brilliant in the odd angry shot, and proved what a great actor he could have been.

Mob, if ever you get the chance to see 'The Games' do it. It was a comedy starring John Clarke and Bryan Dawe. It was about the logistical problems of setting up the Sydney Olympics. It was co-written by Ross Stevenson of 'lawyers guns and money' fame and Clarke. I think I have them all on video, and there very funny.

Talking of Chad Morgan( I dunno if I should mention this, but it was a long time ago) I was sitting outside the Prince Of Wales in St Kilda years ago tripping and hallucinating pretty badly, when my friend started screaming-and who should come running along Fitzroy street to comfort her-Chad Morgan(at least we're pretty sure it was Chad Morgan) :D

I'll keep an eye out for it!

I have a video of segments from the Gillies Report which is also a blinder.
