The Decagon should replace the Oval as the shape for an Aussie Rules ground.

What happens when another sport starts using the Dodecagon.

400px-

That's 12 sides...Twelve is 2 more than ten.

We'd all be ****ed then, man.

Now that's just over the top.

Surely these angular fields would only aide stadium design uniformity as well? Thus enhancing the spectators viewing experience...

what would the game be like if were played on a rectangular field the size of a gridiron field, probably would need smaller teams, say 11 v 11

Crap and too NFL and or Rugby like, the wings are definitely a natural requirement and asset of Aussie rules being a unique 360 degree game

The more I think about it the more there is an inherent beauty to the oval shape and how it forces the game to be ultimately played in front of goal. Almost confucious like...

Follow ones boundary & move forward, then you will end up at your goal

I've given the matter some thought, and I reckon the ground should be a big bowl-shaped depression. Means the ball will tend to stay in play instead of going out of bounds. Better viewing for the spectators.

I like this idea....and then you could flush the opposition away.

Might be bad news for Hawthorn though. :(

Was watching this...

And I happened to realize, at the start, when the Quidditch field is being shown in night view, that it resembles the MCG at night A LOT!

It really hit home at how unique and great our sport is. You know it's really unique when only a fantasy sport (which I believe is a rip-off of Aussie Football) is able to utilize it...

Also, the Essendon Quidditch team seems to make an appearance as well. :thumbsu::D

Nonetheless, I agree with the above posts in saying that an Australian Football game would be horrible without it's wings. It's a truly 360 degree sport with no offside rule. This quote summed it up beautifully...

Follow ones boundary & move forward, then you will end up at your goal

FWIW, I love going to AFL games and seeing the crowd go all around the field. It's an amazing sight especially at night. You just look side to side and it's a beautiful display of human togetherness, kind of like a dome or a Colosseum. I can only imagine what it's like for the football players (turn a head any which way and you'll have supporters cheering right back at you!). I wouldn't swap it for the world.

And yes, I do know the OP is a pisstake. But this thread made me appreciate the sport even more.

Oh, and look at what I stumbled upon (right click and open image in new tab)...

It seems to be concept art of an imaginary roman/cyborg gladiator mock-up game (multiplayer), based on today's commercial sports like football - which IMO reminded me a lot of our field.

Here's another photo of "two gladiators duking it out." which wouldn't be too out of place when placed alongside a photo of two AFL players running along the wing of an AFL field... :D

Here's an explanation from the creator himself,

IMMORTAL CIRCUIT is my game, and its pretty straight forward in principle. I took Roman Gladiators. Then I dressed them up like modern mainstream Racecars and Football players, plastered with sponsorship logos and bright colours. And then I crammed a wide variety of bionic limbs and power-tools onto their arms and legs. Stick a bunch of them in a huge stadium, and let them beat the snot out of each other in wild and inventive ways.

(funnily enough, the creator's username and signature is McGibs lol).

21 offers some uniquness, but it could create more problems than it solves. For instance, it is an odd number, which complicates the angles, and makes it harder for commenatators to work out quickly, where and how far out a player is without doing a quick calculation. 21 is also the sum of the first six natural numbers (1+2+3+4+5+6=21).

If you are going to go down this controversial route, why not just have it at 20?

20, is double 10, so it offers some consistency with the original decagon proposal.

But 20, also has some distinctly human qualities. All of the satellites and Voyager probes that have left Earth have been marked with symbols and so forth, in case they are one day found by an intelligent civilization. One of the things they are marked with is 20 markings. Why 20?

Well, the number of proteinogenic amino acids that are encoded by the standard genetic code is exactly 20. If there is intelligent life out there, it is likely they know the significance of this number as they too, would have have discovered that there are 20 amino acids used in cellular life.

20, is on some ways the most significant number in the Universe.

Now I'm not suggesting we use a 20-sided icosagon, but I think it should be considered. A 20-sided icosogan was also the shape used for the wheel on the Price is Right. So, unlike your 21-sided proposal, the 20 sided icosagon HAS been used before on TV and it works.

clearly the best post in the history of BF :thumbsu:

Kanga man's ability to think outside the oval is an asset to the site.

That's actually quite clever, in a juvenile sort of way...

a decahedron would be much better

you set up a 3D cage with an anti gravity machine meaning players float all around

You're not thinking fourth dimensionally!

Wormhole's are where it's at.
