A great band and they still cut it live - one of my favourite gigs of last year.

my favorite album:Freedom Of Choice

favorite song:Big Mess

Philosophically they are a hugely interesting band ... were truelly decades before their time and amazingly profetic with views on "Devolution" ...

Has anyone really listened to the lyrics of "Freedom of Choice" ... ??? ... spine tingling how on the money it is .

side note ... was LMAO the other day when i was watching my 2 years olds favourite show on Nick jnr the other day called "Wow wow Wubbzy" when up bobbed Mark Mothersbaugh drawing pictures for the kiddies a la Mr Sqiggle ... nearly fell off the couch .

apparently they are very big in the kiddie market these days

Mark Mothersbaugh does a lot of work with children's TV - he did the music for Rugrats and some other shows.

Duty now for the future is a fairly good album. The New Traditionalists has some cool tunes, but I don't like how they used drum machines in some of the songs

His name appeared regularly in the music credits for many a disposable TV series back in the '80's and '90's.

What surprised me a lot about them is that they've had unofficial releases since 1974; I didn't know about this until I discovered a few comps sold at Gaslight Records about 10 years ago.

absolutely love devo for a multitude of reasons:

great songwriters
concepts of devolution so perfect
incredible stage shows (still today as old men)

as well as lots of music for tv shows, mark mothersbaugh does quite a lot of film work, including all the wes anderson films. i dont think it is merely coincidence that i love all wes anderson films (including the royal tenenbaums being my number one film of all time).

one of the things that i would love to do before my time is up is to work with mark mothersbaugh. either have him produce some tracks with the band im in, or work with him on some of his film scoring etc. would be awesome. except that he lives in LA, which is an absolute hole.

I love the live EP [81] and just read that the live CD [2003 rerelease] has the 6 tracks of the EP as its first 6 tracks, but I have looked at it in shops and the track order is different - may be the 99 release? The versions of Freedom of Choice and Whip It / Girl U Want on the EP are great!

EP track listing

"Freedom of Choice Theme Song" – 2:46
"Whip It" – 2:41
"Girl U Want" – 2:56
"Gates of Steel" – 3:17
"Be Stiff" – 2:50
"Planet Earth" – 2:32

DEVO were on Letterman the other night...gotta say I was impressed with the performance.

I didn't realise they just released a new album. Will definitely downl...err, buy it. Will be interesting to listen to what they've come up with after all these years.

Spreading more love for 'Doctor Detroit' Actually seen the end of that movie a few weeks ago. Another big hit from the mid 80's would be 'Here to go' (dunno why that song just shot into my head!!)

I was massively into these guys when I was 13-14 (around 2001-2002), but then went off them for a while (more getting into other stuff than suddenly not liking them anymore). I've been listening to them a little bit more lately though, and I'm going to go and buy their new album this afternoon. I've read good things about it so far (apparently it's their best work since New Traditionalists in 1981), so it should be good :D

It's a shame that a lot of people only know them for "Whip It", as they had a fair number of better songs than that.

Great band.:thumbsu:

Girl U Want and Beautiful World are my favorites.

I was actually starting to believe that everyone on this board had their taste buds in the arseh*le.
