just wanna get the overall opinion on how we went in the PSD and the Rookie draft

im stoked we picked pfiffer back up and am sure johnson will be a good pick up to

any opinions

Given our picks in the national draft we did very well.
Preseason Draft, well we got our man even if he wasn't my man but still the way he played the second half of the season has me pretty optimistic of making a decent contribution.
Rookie Draft, Gartlett seems to be good pick up, stanton a bit of , bentley a bit of meh in there for more depth, and the rest we already know of.

We've done well.

Not sure why we went for Bentley, Pfeiffer, Jacobs and Hill - have been in the system long enough for us to know they're not up to the required level.

Would have preferred we had given players like Klemke and Gaertner a go.

New Players (not incl Pfeiffer, Hill, Jacobs)

Chris Johnson - I was telling a mate before he left Melbourne that he had impressed me and been a shining light in what was a dark season for the MFC. A dashing HB flanker who is a nice smooth kick and has pretty good hands for his height. Needs to be a little tougher at the ball though and learn to be a little cleaner with the ball under pressure.
Overall though, I am rapt that he is now a blue seeing as he is only 22 years of age and after a breakthrough 2008 season in which he still only played 10 games but still impressed, he could cement his spot in or starting 22. Had a 35 disposal game in Melbourne's win against the lions which really impressed me.
Grigg and Jonno will give us that much needed run off the back half and help free up Scotland down the wing.

Jeffrey Garlett - You only have to watch he's swan district highlight reel on youtube to see how evasive and agile he is and how sleak he is with the ball. A very nice kick at goal and has plenty of tricks in the bag that will excite the navy blue faithful. Ratts and Hughes did a great job because we were seriously lacking pace and genuine skill through our forward line, so with Yarran and Garlett added to the mix to go with Eddie, we can expect some very exciting times ahead. Don't be surpised when your hearing JEFREEEEEEEY every time he's near the ball :p :thumbsu:

Greg Bentley - Really couldn't make the Port side in 2008 but did show some positive glimpses including 2 21 disposal games in his 5 games.
From what I saw though, he was always very hard at the ball and liked a bump or two which is what we need. Bentley could be used as a tagging option as he is reasonably quick and has the build to hold the bigger bodies in the AFL, like a Goodes. I'd be surprised if Bentley got a game for us next year but if he puts his head down and really develops his game, he could prove a good find for us.

No one expected Jameson to be the player that he is today after being upgraded from the rookie list. I expect these 3 boys to be really trying to push for selection and all 3 are capable. Regardless if they get a game or not, we are looking very strong for next year!! Can't Wait!! :thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

Don't mind that Big Sauce Jacobs is back or Lachie. I do mind that Pfeiffer was picked again. Poor disposal and not right for us.:thumbsd:

Mate in my opinion i can have one, like it or not to other Carlton supporters these guys will be playing in the Bullants more then for the blues.

I hope Hadley,Warnock will be more on the ground then on off it,early signs haven't been great so far.

Time will tell on Austin,Hampson, and Edwards to name just a few to add with Kennedy,Benjamin and Raso already gone.

Hartlett needs to stand up this season also.

I say we better have picked 4 good ones at least with The National Draft, they all sound good, but will see.

I see Yarran took the number 13,it's been a great number for us in the 50 years, hopefully it won't curse him.

I get the feeling Karma will come back with the Eagles one day.

It wouldn't surprise me also if Gibbs and Russell goes home especially Russell. I guess his no lost, most people seem to hate him on bf even thou he is o.k + Ohailipin.

Oh yeah it wouldn't surprise me if we get beaten by Richmond in Round 1

Bah,Humbug to all.

But of a mixed lot I reckon. We'd committed to Johnson, fair enough though I am not convinced, the coaches saw him first hand at Melbourne, he seemed to be coming on towards the end of last season and he is an elite kick which we could do with. So fair call there. Likewise Sauce Jacobs who is a good size, developed, well known to the club and gives it his all. And Lachie Hill the club has had a good look at and is well positioned to make a call on. Darren Pfieffer I'd rather have passed on, but a promise is a promise and he showed something last year. I just think his limitations are pretty obvious, and we have a couple of others on the list with the same sort of profile but, to my mind, better options (Hadley who I'd have in the team and Bentick who I'd have in the team before Pfieffer). But what I really don't get is why when we have Hadley, Bentick and Pfieffer on the list we went and picked up Bentley. He lacks pace and skill, and reputedly has a big ego and nightmare "stage dad". While he can get the ball, I just don't see why we would add him to the list when we could have looked at others with more up-side such as Tom Allwright, Clancee Pearce or Kade Kelmke to develop in the longer term. And as far as Stanton is concerned, there were surely better options around given his skill issues. If we wanted to go with a tall defender with run why not try Steve Gaertner who has worked very hard to improve his kicking with some effect and has real KP height or Michael Gugliotta (real surpise he didn't get picked up) who also has real KPD height or Ben Birthisel who has the pros of Stanton but better kicking and didn't get a gig at all? Or if not particulerly looking for that type how about Allwright, Pearce or Kelmke, or Taylor Gilchrist, Bryn Weadon, Hamish Shepheard all of whom were picked up later or some of those that didn't get picked up at all - eg Jamie Sheahan (unbelieveble he didn't get picked up), Jay Shannon, Alex Stopp, Ian Richardson, Levi Casboult/Joel Smouha (though not as ruckmen - a bit small), or if we thought a ruck worth taking Andrew Renton or Broc McCauley who are both genuine ruck height and show some promise. As for Gartlett, not who I would have grabbed that early, but exciting as all hell and able to do the freakish, question I have is will his body bulk up - he doesn't seem to have been able to bulk up at all over the last couple of years. And whilst I appreciate the value of a good small forward, I don't know that it was our biggest need to try and cover. Maybe a mid with pace and skill, a taller defender or key forward (although decent ones were in short supply I'll admit) would have been a priority. Just my thoughts. Had I been drafting for the Blues with the way it panned out I think I'd have gone as follows:

PSD Johnson (we commited)
RDRnd1 Jamie Sheahan (inside or outside mid decent pace and skill and kicks goals)
RDRnd2 Clancee Pearce (some question his pace, but he's not slow, has a beautiful kick although sometimes inconsistent disposal)
To my mind these were the best 2 kids in the PSD - Pearce slipped and Sheahan missed altogether.
Steven Gaertner - given we were prepared to wear Stanton's footskills we should have bitten at this guy instead, or if his footskills deemed too bad (and I don't see how if Stanton's were acceptable) then Michael Gugliotta
PSD Rnd 4 Joel Smouha - good height, can pinch hit in ruck but would look at him as a KP utility project. Unless we committed to Bentley, which I would hope we didn't.
PSD Rnd 5-7 we committed to Pfieffer and Jacobs, so have to honour that. We may have also committed to Lachie Hill and if so then again should honour it. But if any of these were not pre-committed I'd have loved to have had a nibble at a kid called Patrick Heenan - small utility player with real pace and skill who has already relocated from the NT to study and loves Melbourne. But he isn't on anyone else's radar it would appear, so I'm probably missing something. Still that's how I'd have gone -

Johnson/Sheahan/Pearce/Gaertner/Smouha/Heenan

(defender-mid/ goalkicking mid/BF-mid/KD-running defender-mid/KP util-short ruck/ small utility)

Unfortunately, once Sibosado went there wasn't a key forward worth taking at our first 2 picks and Hamish Shepheard went just before our third and there wasn't another key forward I rated enough to grab despite that being an area we need to try and recruit for.

These are two names which made me think the Dockers scored in the Rookie draft, along with De Boer.

Hamish Shepheard, I think he a bright future, would have been a good fit the for Blues.

*also ianh, please try and break up your posts, it is very hard to read when it is written in one big block.

Every player is different but Lachie Hall's last month was 1000% better than the rest of his first year. As someone passed over at all of the drafts but showing tremendous athletic ability, it was a risk worth taking, and he started to show alot more. he's also one of the youngsters to have impressed in the off-season. Give him another year to see if he can keep the improvement up.
