I know many are becoming tired of the various pronunciation threads that have been around lately, so I've decided we should press onto more hard hitting issues. The evening meal is an often hotly debated topic, it's time we end the debate for good - tea, dinner or supper?

Haha, I was having this discussion with someone just yesterday. If I'm going out to eat then it's dinner, if I'm eating at home then it's tea. If anyone I knew ever referred to it as supper then I'd punch them.

Pretty accurate. It used to always be tea for me. Now it's whatever comes to mind apart from supper.

For me dinner is the main meal of the day, so if I have my main meal at noon then that's dinner and if I have something light at night that's tea. If I have my main meal at night then I have lunch at noon and dinner at night.

Tea in cricket is at 3:10 in the afternoon - more like afternoon tea, a short snack between lunch and tea/dinner.
Like other posters on here, I call it tea if I'm at home and dinner if I'm going out.

Dinner sounds more formal.

What if you have a formal dinner at home, and then the next night you don't?

You're at the same table, doing the same thing yet it is called something different ;)

Have dinner at home, go out for dinner. It's just dinner :thumbsu:

Whenever somebody calls it tea I think of that scene from Grease:
"My parents want to know if you want to come over for tea tonight?"
"I don't like tea."
"You don't have to drink tea!"
"Well I don't like parents."
