I'm delighted for Pink to be getting another go, and I hope he has a red hot crack and does well. But how long ago did we delist him? Could we have afforded to wait for him to get to the level of being a rookie? He may still never play an AFL game.

He came to us as a tall forward, not a defender. Pick 54 Rookie Draft from Glenelg, 193cm and quite skinny. A Hail Mary pick that didn't work out. Lovely young man by all accounts.

I see Tom Mitchell is now complaining about his treatment at Hawthorn. I wonder how long before things turn sour at Collingwood.
Obviously it's hard to know from the outside looking in, but it reads like Mitchell has an overinflated idea of himself as a player.

He complains about Hawthorn's rating system because he was the worst rated player on two occasions (alert the church elders!) Never mind that that means there are 20 other weeks where someone else would've been rated the worst. If his beef was with the rating system itself - the idea of singling a player out for their performance in a negative light - then fair enough. But his beef isn't with the system, it's that the system dared to single HIM out.

His justification for feeling slighted on those two occasions is that he received Brownlow votes in those so must've played well. While I understand players don't live with their head in the sand when it comes to Brownlow votes and hype, I can't imagine that champions like JPK or Pendlebury care that they received Brownlow votes if they had a performance that wasn't up to standard in the eyes of their coach. They'd be self-reflective and self-critical enough to focus on how they could be better. Doesn't appear to be the case with Mitchell.

It just checks out with his history. You won't get on with everyone in footy and not every club is the right fit for individual players but no one should have this much difficulty meshing with the club they're at over a ten year period. If it's happening over and over, maybe the call is coming from inside the house.

I thought the same thing. Just smacks of a player thinking that they shouldn't be held to the same standards as everyone else because they have talent.

Hard to know without knowing the exact details of the Hawthorn rating system, but lets say for example the ratings are based on things like 2nd efforts, pressure acts, team first things then there could be a very good reason for the discrepancy between how the coaches rated his game vs how the umpires did.

In his early days at the Swans it was obvious he had mountains of talent but the coaching staff were challenging him to get 100% out of himself by holding him to the same standards the other players were held to. He didn't like it, so he moved on. Surprise surprise the same thing happens at the next club he goes to.

Maybe. But he'll still retire with a Brownlow and at least one premiership. And he's given value to the teams he's played for and made them better.
Absolutely. He's a gun, and a bit of a twat. I think both can be true at once.

The apple did not fall far from the tree.

I’m not across all the details where posters have painted him in a dim light, but I didn’t mind Titch. What I most rated about him was when he was busting his guts in the ressies racking up 40-50 touches week after week (without getting back in the 1’s), that said a lot about his character to me.

He’s since won a Brownlow and a premiership medal (and was close to BOG in the granny)… looks like he’s happy at the Pies… good luck to him.

The problem is that's all he was doing. He was asked to work on other aspects of his game in the reserves.

2 min mark at this link has Tom on the podcast:
As others have noted, it seems Tom Mitchell was as unpopular with Sam Mitchel at Hawthorn as he was with Horse at Sydney.

Tom speaks to the coaches rating him the lowest in team in two consecutive games despite winning Brownlow points in those games. In another game review, the coaches played five clips of poor play, and they were all Tom. Ouch…

My sense is that Tom has always been about Tom, and he genuinely struggles to understand why coaches don’t like him. I think he fails to do a lot of the team things, which are the things that drive coaches mad.

I remember vision of Horse with Tom at half time showing him how to defensively position (role playing Tom as the opposition mid), and Horse was quite aggressive and frustrated with Tom. I remember thinking that Horse was going too far, it wasn’t a great look.

It’s a shame, as Tom was exactly who we have needed the past five years. If he could have developed a team first mindset or if Horse could have found a way to reach him, things could have been different.

Fly might be the kind of coach who can manage Tom, though I am also keen to see how Fly goes when the pressure mounts and things don’t go his way. Some of Tom’s coach killer characteristics may also drive him crazy. We are all human.

The thing about Tom Mitchell is that he's a good player but he values himself more highly than coaches do. Hawthorn are paying a part of his contract aren't they? So the Pies have him at a discounted rate. Swans wanted to keep him, but he wanted top dollar and we didn't value him at that price. Hawthorn snapped him up to fill a void and had the money to accommodate him.

I dont think any club with a decent midfield would pay top dollar for a Tom Mitchell.

He admitted that he changed his attitude a lot at the end of his first year there. Made all the difference. Good luck to him but he's a different player to the one who left us.
Him and Horse were no good , but in every team , no matter what sport not everyone gets on and good luck to him

Continuous pattern here.
As long as the club is happy then TomME can do what he likes.
It wears thin after a while obviously but on this occasion everything worked out fine for both parties.
Perhaps a major reason as to why Taylor Adams wanted out after being relegated behind Tom.
