Simon Goodwin, past champion player, now solid contributor. Still a decent player, but a shadow of his former. All of this true, but is he a good captain, I honestly don't believe he is, I think the only reason he was made captain was because we had no one else, and the reason he has continued to be captain after subsequent soft finals efforts is because he is the incumbent.

He does not lead by example, or actually perhaps he does because the whole team seems to just pick up cheap possessions on the Half back line lately. He doesn't put his body on the line, he falls over and puts in average chasing efforts.

He is nothing compared to Roo, in terms of being a captain, Goodwin isn't Roos skid marks.

I demand the instant installment of Patrick Dangerfield as captain of the Adelaide Football club, he is a true example of the selfless effort and determination that we are sorely lacking in the rest of the squad.

Danger is the epitomy of leadership. When he was FINALLY played in his NATURAL position in the MIDFIELD in the last term he fired the hell up and won a heap of contested ball. HAS to be played in the guts week in week out. He'll be a good pinch hitting FF but only if Tex is having a bad game. SIGH at this club this year. At least NBA Playoffs start this week >_>

Training track superstar, average on field leader who's crumbled in crunch moments of the last two finals we've played in. Craig stating that he was fast becoming our best ever captain was the daftest thing a representative of our club has ever publicly uttered. Closely followed by Mick Doughty's claim the other week that "finishing in the top four isn't a goal of ours. It's what we want to achieve, but it's not a goal as such".

Firstly, his performance on the field are far better than people give him credit for - though he wasn't great today. He was our only AA selection last year and would have won the Club Champion award yet again if he hadn't missed 3 games through injury. I have no doubt whatsoever that he will be leading our Club Champion voting after R4 this year as well.

Secondly, there is far more to being a leader than imposing yourself physically on the football field. Vince's development as a player is almost entirely due to Goodwin taking him under his wing. Vince isn't the only player in this category.

Sure he's no Ricciuto. He's never been built like a bull and he's never been renowned for running through players. That's not his style, never has been and never will be. He IS still our best player and one of the few players who puts in consistently every single week. He leads from the front in the best way he knows how.

Haha that is some funny jokes.

Vader, somehow the bolded section which you must have posted 3 years ago has made it into one of today's posts. You might want to get admin to look into that.

I have no doubt that Goodwin now <<< Goodwin of 2-3 years ago.

I also have no doubt at all that he'll be leading our Club Champion award this year, as the only player in our entire side who has played at a close to consistent level all season.

I'd love to say that Vince, Thompson, Porplyzia, Tippett, Dangermouse and Mackay have all gone past him - but they haven't. Porplyzia might have been named in the team for the last few weeks, but he's been MIA on the field. Tippett hasn't been much better. Vince has been ineffective at best, even if he's been racking up mountains of disposals the last couple of weeks. Dangermouse was brilliant against Sydney, but really hasn't had a lot of impact in any other game. Thompson is playing at about 60% of capacity.

Seriously, who has played better football than Goodwin this year on a consistent basis?

When I say he's our best player, he's giving us a 7.5-8 (out of 10) display every week. The others might hit a high of 9 one week, but the next week they're getting 2s and 3s. Porplyzia would be lucky to get a 2 in any of his games so far.

You're wrong here mate, when Roo was captain, Goody was a clear vc, with distance between him and anyone else. He didn't become Captain by default, he was, at the time, the next best leader after Roo.

As Vader says, he's not the on field leader that Roo was, but there's a lot more to captaincy than on-field leadership, and often the leadership on-field is done by someone other than the captain (See: West Coast under Judd '06, where Cousins was clearly the leader; and to some extent Bock nowadays at the AFC)

To understand Goodwins leadership capabilities, just ask Bernie Vince. It's pretty widely known that Goodwin was the one who gave him the rocket, and helped Vince become the player he is now.

EDIT: This is not to say that he would be the best choice for the Captaincy now, but Goodwin was hardly a slouch captain when he gained the mantle.

Goodwin. :p

How he's captain is beyond me. Great game he played today, truly damaging, always chasing, always staying on his feet, always selecting the best option. Ripping performance from the skip!

Goody as Captain is not so much the issue for me

Having Scott Stevens, Ben Rutten, Michael Doughty, Brett Burton and Tyson Edwards all in the leadership group is the real issue

I was always vocal over this issue and have been slammed pillar to post over it, but Craig has to stop investing everything into that group of 4-5 senior players. We dont even appear to be developing future leaders, junior development is one facet of the modern game that Neil Craig is struggling to grasp in relation to some of the other coaches in the AFL.

Goody should have given up the captaincy this year or at least be surrounded by a young leadership group rather than it being the usual old boys club mentality.

The club does invest a lot of resources in its leadership program and I have no doubt that our younger players such as VB, Symes, Danger, D-Mac and Tippett have all benefited from the program and subsequently are more advanced in their leadership skills than most other players in their age group

I'm not a true believer that you need to be in a leadership group to show leadership however in saying that I do believe that the diversity in our current group is somewhat lacking and we need an injection of youth

not only that, but the way he was gee'ing up the team was also fantastic...

As an outsider, could there be some resentment within the "2nd tier" playing ranks that the Goodwin/McLeod/Edwards triumverate have not been moved aside for the newer blood coming through, who have earned their stripes but not getting the rewards?

And now it's showing up in the efforts on game day?

PowerForGood - in general, I don't have a problem with McLeod, Edwards and Goodwin playing on. They still contribute each week, particularly McLeod and Goodwin this year. The problem is, they will never be as good as they were - which we expect - and the game is really catching up with them. When we're playing well, Edwards goes along with the ride*. But he's having a stinker so far and is a step off the pace.

*Not suggesting Edwards wasn't an absolute gun.

Yesterdays performance was quite pathetric from a senior player, nevermind a captain. It was a season ending, line in the sand game and he was hardly sighted. Not good enough.
