What happened to it and why doesn't every single Catters fan understand this simple fact?

The next time I see a "This season's premiership is in the bag, but will Tom Hawkins be playing?" or "Can we go through this season, and 2012, 2013 seasons undefeated?".... well, I might get a little bit crazy on whoever posts it

These people who start these ridiculous threads should be banned from the internets

Just sayin'

Surely no one honestly thinks the premiership's in the bag? We could not be assured of beating any of Collingwood, Carlton or Hawthorn in September - if we play our best then we certainly can win the flag but we've seen against them all that it takes a lot to ensure victory.

I can't speak for anyone else but for me there is no lid. As far as I'm concerned we are chasing Collingwood who are the red hot favourites. So anything we do this year is a bonus. I felt that last year too. I'd love to snatch a third flag in this era but I'm not holding my breath.

Banned from internets? Who gives you that right? Caesar? Nero? Hitler? Gaddafi?
If you don't like these threads, just ignore them. There are a lot of other threads worth discussing about.

OP must've been in a coma since mid 2010 and just woken up, could there any other plausible explanation for his flimsy accusations?

Yeah, it's a bit perplexing. I'll just enjoy the fact that we're odds on to finish top-2 on the ladder for the fifth consecutive year and enjoy the ride in September, however long and sweet it may be. This year most of us we're hoping for about 4-6 on the ladder and blooding plenty of the kids for the next era. We're playing with the house's money right now.

I don't think most Cats fans even remotely think the flag is in the bag. A few maybe, but the majority realise it's a marathon not a sprint and there's a heck of a long way to go and a lot we need to improve on.

I agree PO. I cant say I have seen anyone on our board post that we "have it in the bag".
Were not Pies supporters!!

Sure, there were threads about where our next loss will come from and if we can go through the season undefeated with our run home.
But why not? I think both Cats and Pies supporters are more than entitled to raise those threads.

Its not so much of an arrogance thing but more a reflection that the two teams on top of the ladder are ahead of the rest of the competition by a decent margin and I wouldnt begrudge any similar threads on the Pies board.

Still, Pies are the team to beat and we are definately a fair whack behind and I beleive that 99% of our supporters beleive that!!

P.S. I think "the Lid" rightfully disappeared after 07.

I certainly have no lid when it comes to being proud of the records we have achieved over the last 4 years. But in regards to this season, while Geelong is a contender for the flag it is by no means in the bag. There are several other teams that can win it and Collingwood is still the team to beat. So I am not sure why oldstyle thinks that people are being overconfident at this point.

Interesting timing with this thread, I would have thought the lid was firmly screwed on after Saturdays effort.

If you'd followed Geelong for more than 5 minutes, it should have been screwed on firmly by three quarter time of the 1992 Grand Final and not removed since. 2008 was a nice reminder of the wonderful capacity this club has of grasping failure from success.

Agree, and I'd go back to 67 for that.

What happened in 2008?

What, you rekon we had "the Lid" on going into the 08 finals series with only one loss to our name? Most of us, majority of media included, thought we were a sure thing!!

I dont think there needs to be any "Lid", sure apprehension, but why shouldnt we be able to be proud of how our team is travelling at the moment?!

Personally, I dont see the same arrogance on this board towards how we are going this year - go check out the Pies board if you want to see lack of "lids" - according to them they had this years flag in the bag 2 seconds after the final siren went on the replay.

To put our supporters in the same level of arrogance is beyond a joke to be honest.
I cant say I have seen anyone here say that we already have it in the bag - a lot are still in disbeleif and awe of how well we are travelling this season given the recent events!!

Most thinking football supporters know we are a looooong way off having the premiership in the bag, let alone making the grand final!!

The lid became superfluous after the GF win in 07. Regardless, with Pies raging favourites, whatCats supporter would be writing in 2011 that the premiership is ours?

Even if we wanted to take the lid off we can't, there is a big fat ugly magpie sitting on it at the moment.
Very true TurkeyTom. So proud of this Club but the reality is an awful lot will have to fall into place for it to happen this year. Get the feeling the Pies are idling at the moment and are capable of several rapid gear changes come finals time.

While it's fair to say the lid still exists and rightfully so, seeing as things can unexpectedly go sour so quickly (read 2008). I think it's also fair to expect results from this current era of players. We've all seen how well they can play and so there is the natural expectation from the fans, coaches and players alike to reach that same high level of performance on a regular basis. Once you know they can do it you want it more.

For example Travis Varcoe, we've all see him accumulate 20+ touches and a couple of goals a few times now, taking a game apart and being the player he was hyped to be, so both internal and external expectations of performance rise and the pressure mounts.

I am no longer ever fearful that the team will just give up and roll over. The culture of this club has been altered for good because of this generation of players, a belief is now instilled within each of them. You can't expect perfection all the time, the team is human as shown on last Saturday night, but the last 4 H&A seasons and this one so far have been as close to it as any of us could have imagined.

This team no longer needs to feel limited, if they play to their best and restrict the opposition they will win more often than lose. It's really that simple.

Given their recent historical record these players have earned the right to feel confident in their own ability.

That's why the existence of 'The Lid' these days is more questionable than before.

In saying all that however, Collingwood is the leader of the pack at the moment. Geelong won't mind being the hunter again this season as it has served us so well in the past. We are in a good position but by no means whatsoever is the flag in the bag.
