Matildas The Matildas Thread

Is a good headline using the word "gagged", but then they don't follow it up with any substantial quotes in the story. Perhaps Kerr just didn't want to speak publicly when she would have been as surprised about the news as much as anyone. Anyway Sam Kerr is liking posts by teammates on twitter, so she's not exactly gagging herself - and there's quite a few of them now - including one of the captains Claire Polkinghorne (her and Kellond-Knight are kind of the brains of the team), that are supportive of Stajcic's time coaching the Matildas - but its easily to convolute that into it being a rallying cry against the decision.

Van Egmond is an assistant coach, so I'm guessing he would likely be asked to leave along with Stajcic. Its a bit complicated anyhow with his daughter being one of the stars of the team. Lost me with Roger Kerr though. May as well ask all the parents what they think.

Correct on all counts, Roger coached Aussie Rules, IMHO relevant to the politics of holding down a coaching gig, player discontent, having the confidence of the board, & a member of the sacked coaches collective.
I understand he is friendly with Mr Van Egmond.

I've seen him watching from the stands at the previous world cup, along with the other relatives and friends of players. who I expect all have personal opinions influenced by being close to players in the team.

Stajcic has coached Sam Kerr for a long time in the young Matildas, when she was playing for Sydney FC and in the Matildas. He voted for Sam Kerr as Best Player in The World in the 2018 FIFA Female Football Player of the Year.

I was not suggesting Kerr to be other than asked to comment. Personally I'd be looking at FFA politics, not the players.

Roger Kerr's opinion would mean shit to the FFA. He played footy. So what.

Moya Dodd and others seems to be behind it. Something to do with 'The Lesbian Mafia'. THis is what happens when HR enters sport also.

Think there quite a few players across the w-League, some in the Matildas past and present who are in same sex relationships, so that report that says one or some of the coaching staff made a "homophobic" remark(s) would be taken seriously - if that's what took place.

Now its become like something that's the opposite of the "me too" thing, with so many players posting on twitter, it might have the effect on the ones that don't post anything on social media being blamed and victimize for having the coach sacked.

There was one public incident a few months ago when a young player was picked to be part of the squad for the recent games against Chile and her father withdrew her from the squad. Stajcic made some odd public remarks about the father leading an alternative lifestyle.

Roger Kerr was a suggestion for a comment before Sam came out - he would know her opinion, he & Van Egmond are mates ... what the FFA thinks/thought was not the point.

Wasnt aware of Ms Dodd:

Anyone with half a clue knows what this sort of PC stuff does to team morale, let alone ditching the coach - another home goal by soccer in Aus, fair dinkum unbelievable - hope the full story comes out after the World Cup.

What's the issue to come out of that article you posted? I don't read anything other than someone trying to promote the game for females to play.

As stated I wasnt aware of Ms Dodd, why she was mentioned by "Mr Bojangles" - clearly she has strong opinions on the game.
Beyond that I'm not in a position to know how she fits into the puzzle that is the why/timing of the sacking. If nothing else it adds background to posters like my good self.

Well Gallop's press conference today didn't add to anything about the reasons why, just repeated what he stated on Saturday. other than they're appointing an new coach within the next 2 weeks and it won't be Stajcic, even if some of the players still want him.

"it's not within the power of the players to appoint coach nor is it of course then within the power of the players to reinstate a coach – but that was not put to me."

That's something they should have said last time when the players got rid of the previous coach.

What a shambles this is turning into. On the eve of the biggest game of the year for the mens team and this is the only thing being discussed.

To be fair it's a bigger story than a Round of 16 game, particularly as it appears the players are completely with him.

On a brighter note, on Sunday, I trekked out to Fawkner to watch Melbourne City play the Jets. A comfortable 4-0 win to City. All the City players were happy to sign autographs for fans post-match, which meant I came home with two happy children.

Tracey Holmes doing the rounds of ABC programs supporting the FFA's decision & the group that did the work.

Given the responses from players to the sacking of Stajcic over the past few days, there seems to be a significant disconnect between what underpins the FFA's decision and what is being stated publicly by the players who played under him.

It gets murkier, but that's because of statements like "The ABC has spoken extensively to parties involved in this case and has seen the Matildas Wellbeing Audit" without going into any detail at all.

Personally, on the basis of what's been released, it's unsurprising that Stajcic is considering his legal options.

So much for the confidentiality that Gallop's been hiding behind

Check out this ABC peice:

One of the two key reports that contributed to the sacking of Matildas coach Alen Stajcic reveals a culture of fear and unacceptable levels of stress among the players.
A quarter of the players who responded reported feeling psychological distress and many were afraid to seek support, believing it would be held against them.

Q. Were the Matildas players views appraised collated as a group. NO would be my view of how such surveys are undertaken. Yes, I could be wrong.
The article says: The Our Watch survey was federation wide — players, coaches, and FFA staff. It is believed there were around 140 completed responses.

Hard to know without the details - the confidentiality card gets played so frequently, rarely to the benefit of the people who are impacted.

As this is a matter of leadership, Gallop has to go too. Like Sutherland at CA, the CEO is responsible for the culture created in an organization - no exceptions. No passing the buck down the line, you are accountable for the good and the bad. If it got out of hand it's on your watch. Do us all a favor and GAGF.

The FFA is starting to resemble the solid decision making of Soccer Australia. Such a shame this has happened a few months out of our best shot at a WC.
