Look, I understand why the AFL gives the previous year's bottom clubs an easier draw (sort of), but the crows finished just outside the 8 in 2014. In fact, had Sydney beaten Richmond and Gold Coast beaten West Coast in round 23 they'd have finished in the 8. Going by the fixture handed to them this year you'd think they'd collected the last 4 wooden spoons.
One trip to Perth against the weaker of the two Perth teams, Hawks and Freo at home, and they don't play Sydney until Round 18 (At which point we've already played them twice).

This surprises you why ? They have had draws rated easy by the media analysts the last few years.
On the draw, what a joke that even though the AFL was asked by broadcasters for more Friday night Port games that they still couldn't achieve it - apparently due to difficulties in the draw - I assume the difficulty was telling Carlton and Collingwood they would get less.

St Kilda v Collingwood tomorrow night. Has there ever been a less appetising Friday night game? Ever?

May have been the only game that worked in the schedule (given their excuse) ..... what a joke.

The AFL knows how bad they are and how badly they need a good season to counter any momentum we have generated over the past two years

Can't disagree with any of that. Carlton have 7 Friday night games and a Thursday night game. Its notionally a commerical draw but does not even achieve that.

When the commercial stations are requesting more of us and we still don't get it, it shows its more a "Victorian Commerical" draw.
I think I heard last night (the year may be wrong), that you need to go back to about 2005 to find a friday night game not featuring a Vic club.

Has their ever been a year like this before where so many top 8 fancied teams have been written off after 2 rounds and on the flipside non finalists from the previous year are now on everyones top 8 list. It's probably been going on for years where media analysts overreact to early season form but i'm definitely noticing it more this year.

Basically the majority of the media were pumping Port's tyres up, way over the top most of it was. The logic was Port missed a Grand final by 3 points in 2014 and now they have Ryder so Premiership it is. We all know it's a lot harder than that. Now these same experts that had picked Port for the flag are saying we are probably going to be toast if we lose this weekend. Bones McDermott for instance, was adamant all pre season this was Port's year but now is saying if we don't play Lobbe this weekend we will lose and if we lose that is probably season over. Geelong and Gold Coast were in most people's top 8's at the start of the year but many have already ruled them out.

Last weeks wasn't much better West Coast Versus Carlton.

Yeah, I haven't bothered staying home to watch any of them yet. It appears to me that Foxtel are being handed the better games of each round. Although Sunday's Bombers v Hawks game was by far the best game of the year thus far. That should've been the Friday game.

Last week, the Saturday night containing the biggest Victorian Club of them all, Collingwood Vs Brisbane rated 242k in Melbourne for Channel 7. On Saturday night the Ch 7 game between the 2 non Vic teams of Port and Sydney rated 231k in Melbourne. Just shows how disproportionately advantaged the Victorian teams (particularly the bigger ones) are and that neutrals simply want a good game. Good games will rate regardless who is playing.

And we have the can't miss blockbuster Friday night game next week. Richmond vs Melbourne.

There's also a few interesting things with regards to the venues for games. For instance (and I'm sure there's others), in round 21, Hawthorn v Port is at Etihad on the Friday night, while on the Sunday, Carlton v Melbourne is at the MCG. Given the status of both games, I would have thought the venues could have been swapped.

Given the history of both the Melbourne weather and how Hawks supporters dont turn up when we play their team, its not a surprising draw.

Richmond are actually ok entertainment. Collingwoid, Carlton, St Kilda are all garbage viewing pretty much no matter who they play. Hawthorn and Essendon are worth a look. For some reason I really enjoy a Footscray game on the tele.

Last time we played the Roos, Ben Jacobs kicked the only goal he would kick for the entirety of 2014 and Monfries pinged a hammy 7 metres from an open goal.

Weird shit happens.
Well this week, let's hope it happens to them for once!!!!!!!!

Dal Santo already out, Thompson on the TV in a moon boot yesterday, maybe a bit of luck going our way this time. But we need more than that, Hammer needs to come back into form, we need to nullify the rucks, or at least play to Goldstein's expected dominance. Schulz has to have a day out as he usually does against North. I don't have any problems with the defence but when the rucks, turnovers and clearances go against us as much as they have then they're going to be under incredible pressure and something has to crack.

Even when Carlton were halfway decent they were fairly horrendous to watch - hence their brainless galoot becoming a cult hero, he was literally the only person on the list that was discernible from everyone else.

I guess watching Chaplin spudding up in prime time is pretty good entertainment.

If they play well they're pretty entertaining, and if they play shit and lose badly you'll at least see their fans spit on the players or something. Oh, and then there's Chaplin.

footscray are very appealing. it feels like being dismissed as one of the poor/weak/small club in Melbourne has given them the "we'll show you what a small club can do!!!" mentality.
