I would have thought the outrage would be directed at Mr Fleming and his wife owning 52 million+ shares in the company, not how the company chooses to invest.
Mark Haysman states in the article Port Adelaide were advised and aware of Mr Fleming's shareholder status.

A NOTORIOUS businessman who has left a string of failed ventures in his wake has emerged as a key figure behind the company sponsoring AFL club Port Adelaide.
Former bankrupt Donald Brownlie Fleming - whose failed businesses have cost investors and banks more than $30 million over 15 years - and wife Dee Dee are major shareholders in the company behind the Power's My ATM sponsorship deal.

In a written statement outlining Mr Fleming's involvement with the company, Mr Scala said: "Don Fleming founded My ATM jointly with Ross Cameron and myself".
"My ATM employs 20 staff and up to 30 external consultants. It is a strong business, with robust growth forecasts that are supported by independent analysis," the statement said. "Mr Fleming is a significant shareholder in My ATM. He consults to a company that is advising My ATM on marketing.
"Mr Fleming is not and never has been a director of My ATM. He has absolutely no involvement in the management of My ATM or its business decisions. He is not an employee of My ATM.

In a move that has outraged investors who lost millions in Fleming's previous failed businesses, My ATM Holdings Ltd is understood to be paying more than $500,000 a year in a five-year, guaranteed and incentive-based deal as the Power's major sponsor.
