All those lifestyle decisions are easier to make if you are playing in a losing team. You can play in a losing team anywhere so why not play in one at in your preferred city.

All of those lifestyle decisions are easier to put on hold for a season or two if you are going deep into September as you are now faced with possibility of a once-in-a-career chance to be a premiership player.

For instance, take B.Hill.
His partner says "Perth sucks, why are we even here?".
B.Hill: "Because I'm a pro footballer and this is where my job is."
Partner: "You can do your job in a better city and get paid more. You still haven't told me why were are _here_"
B.Hil: "[crickets]". Because there is no legitimate professional reason to devote your career to a losing franchise. If your lifestyle is better in Melbourne and your football isn't going anywhere in Perth, why stay?

According to one of the family members, Brad Hill almost doubled his salary going to the Saints. At the time of leaving he was on a similar salary to Walters, in his first season he was on more than Walters and Stephen combined. Brad and Stephen's mum was very upset when he got traded, she loved the boys playing together. There is absolutely no mystery as to why Brad was so adamant about being traded to the Saints

Watson averaged 4.5 games a season for us in his time here, playing half the season this year. Fair to say he wasn't first choice but good on him for getting to the top level for 14 games. I think he will be the sort of player Subiaco end up with who looks a class above their opponents playing at both ends of the ground. Big enough to be dangerous at WAFL level, a bit small at AFL to have the average kick he does. I don't doubt his effort at all.

He is the example of what we should expect from the players we take on the rookie list, and we should be satisfied with the return.

What’s with this Subiaco talk !!!!!, Black Duck through and through.

Had a bit of a chat to Brad and Stephen’s mum and sister while waiting to get in the train home after the derby win. Such lovely people. Can see why both boys seem very grounded and compassionate lads. Such a shame he had to go back to Melbourne and Stephen’s injuries caught up with him

Cornes is on the money here.

Maybe, Darcy doesn't have an issue running out games though. One of his strengths is the ability to impact the game in the 4th quarter, so yeah he probably could get fitter but its not a Max Gawn chugging down beer, pizza and smoking issue.

Comparing Gawn and Darcy's body's are like comparing chalk to cheese. Maybe Darcy can be more professional with his diet and training levels, I don't know, and I suspect neither does Cornes. It'd be the first I've heard of it if he is taking short cuts etc. I reckon he has to work much harder than the average player just to get to the condition that he's in now.

A bigger problem is his injuries. There are some doubts that have been cast on how well he handles pain and how resilient he is to his ailments.

Did you even see Darcy this year he played with more ailments and bandages than King Tut!
I think from last year he has definitely toughened up and was very inspirational among the top 5 carrying the team, hopefully this next preseason he can get over the injury's he started this year off with and dominate even more!

Have a look at the picture of Sean and contrast it to the greatest ruck man in the history of the entire universe - Nic Nat makes Sean look positively anorexic.
He looks more Nank and Mummy but with the ability to get round the ground more. It's not even close to the Gawn issue which was simply a guy not taking the game serious enough, can't fault Darcys want IMO.

I mean you kind of alluded to this at the end of your posts but, running out games and being as fit as you can be are two different things. I'm a good long distance runner. unless i was playing a wing role i was a better runner then my opponent even if i was unfit. But i rarely played that well when i was unfit. I played better when i was fit.

I think that is what he's saying. darcy has shown he can impact and run out games. but to take the next step he needs to get fitter again.

The comparison to Max Gawn has no basis though, most players could get fitter but most aren't smashing pizza, beer and smoking. His was entirely based on preparation where as I think Darcy just has a bigger frame than most.

Darcy has gotten fitter, leaner and better each year so it's not as if he is slacking or being unprofessional. He is finding out how dedicated players need to be to reach their potential.

He is well on the way to working out how hard he needs to work. So far he is showing every indication of having the work ethic to reach his potential imo.

The question is, were all the bandages and time on the bench necessary? I agree with you that he's working through it and improving in that area but I think there's still room to improve.

Darcy is a very different ruckman to Gawn. I don’t disagree with the comments about him getting fitter. He is at his best when he covers the ground to get into the backline. If his fitness improves again it will give him that edge to be the best in the game.

He was clearly hampered by knee issues which started in the preseason. If you remember Meek was our starting ruckman in 2021.

What I like about Darcy’s progression this year was his forward development. He is very handy in the forward line.

These heavily front ended deals have hurt Freo badly. If information is to be believed Neale and BHills end year contract salary left Freo vulnerable.

One of annoying parts of the article is that part mentioning he should hire a personal trainer. That’s exactly what he and a couple of others did in the off-season. It’s the “all opinion no research” that bothers me.

I think Hill was getting paid more than when he was at Hawthorn but St Kilda's offer was too big after years at the bottom and missing out on trade targets.

Lachie had improved so much his contract no longer represented his true value, apparently Freo refused to renegotiate so he got shitty chasing more money which he deserved.

Where do these cap management conjectures come from, we should be in excellent shape.

We lost Hogan, Cerra is now gone, we only have one contract north of a mil, nobody else is on big money
Lobb is on 700k

There should be no problem
