I know a lot in this thread think it’s massively disrespectful, but it’s time to move Walters on. Great servant of the club, but his last 2 years…take what you can get.
I think with Cerra going he'll be an important bridge for 2 years in the midfield while we train up his replacement. He still looked good when he was in the midfield, he clearly does not enjoy playing almost purely forward though

That and the fact that he was very underdone coming into this year.

I hope so and on paper it should work.
But his disposal time has been getting worse , if he can’t improve that he can’t play mid .

I didn't like it, but I heard one of the commentators earlier in the year on TAB Radio say that Fremantle should trade Walters at the end of this year - so I guess theres some talk about it going around.

Some vision from when he was fit in the pre-season intraclub match.

It definitely goes deeper than a hampered pre season for Walters, a player with as many preseasons under the belt as he has wouldn't let that affect his whole year the way it did. you would only trade him if we was open to it and you got something pretty decent in return tho

Ballard —> North —> Valente

The best players to have never played according to BF (except Ballard on a technicality).

There were Vic media reports earlier this year that said we were pretty much full re salary cap.

But that we should have more room in coming years. Which sounds like we have been front loading our biggest contracts.

Which also might suggest one reason why we are so loath to trade Lobb -- we may have already paid him most of his money and now we want him to earn it rather than skip out
The 6PR knobs kept saying we had salary cap issues and the Vic media didn’t fact prove it.

We had an issue last year. Hence the salary dump of Hogan and re-signing Mundy extremely late in the piece.

This year Mundy re-signed before the season is out and Cerra offered $750,000 for four years.

Lobb I think is more a case of being open to trade if the right deal presents because his partner has job with Racing Vic but can continue with Freo. The fact that Cerra is gone opens up $750,000. Conca also gone and Wilson will be on a smaller contract.

No salary cap issues for Freo in 2022.

I call bs that 2020 we had salary cap issues.

Since 2016 we have cut a lot of senior players and played a lot of young players. Therefore started to build a war chest.

2019 we lost B Hill and Langdon. Plus we offered Kelly a huge contact.

2018 we lost Neale. Got Hogan, Conca and Lobb and contracts were front loaded.

In 2018 we offered a $5m plus contact to Jeremy McGovern

In 2017 we offered a $4m plus contract to Yeo

2017 we lost Weller and got Wilson.

When was the last time we were on the positive side of the ledger with this one?

Hate whinging about umpiring but when some teams are always toward the top and others down the bottom there is clearly a problem.

I'd be very confident in guessing that we never have.

You're right, the same teams over the last 10 - 15 years get the "rub of the green", and the vice versa. I think one of the biggest factors in the results over this period is that it's generational and linked to who the umpires support(ed) growing up. Hopefully we'll get an improved result over time due to our "success" 2012 - 2015.

We're minus 11 this year.

Is the AFL sacking Margetts enough for to be positive next year?

While there will always be an element of luck, it's not a reasonable proposition to start with that an even free kick count is 'fair'.
Teams play differently so even over a season I wouldn't expect a count to be equal.
Footy fans are inherently biased, and regardless of the outcome rarely think they actually got the 'rub of the green'.

The lack of consistency within games is what rubs the most, but equally it'd be pretty damn hard to be an umpire making split second decisions with a differing quality of view of each contest.
The answer needs to be in simplification of the rules.

I'd personally like to see more of a crackdown on staging, there's been a few more fines but many have been overturned.
Holding the ball actually improved this year too in my opinion (controversial). The incorrect disposal rule was changed, which is what people often complain about based on the previous position, although the trend for letting the ball 'slip' out needs to be managed.
It'd also be nice to understand the post game independent review, but I don't think fans are mature enough for that, they'll just use it to pot individual umpires.

It would be foolish to think that clubs can both see a material advantage from free kicks but choose to ignore modelling their game style to draw more of them.

That I agree with, but equally the 2017-2020 Richmond teams are a good example of a style that may not be conducive to a positive free kick count but are still very effective..

Interesting how the Cats react when about to be tackled.

They either use techniques to make tackle go over the shoulders or they just drop the ball when tackled straight away or they don't take possession.

Our players apart from Walters who ducks, try to take possession and then get rid of it. This leads to more holding the ball calls and less free kicks for high tackles and tackles without the ball.

Also, our defenders don't take the lessons from McPharlin to disrupt forwards. They tend to hold up to the player too long. McPharlin held the player for less than a second, and then bump on side which disrupt the balance of the forward. Then he would body check the forward and get him under the ball.

Offering huge contracts to McGovern and Yeo, forcing Eagles to match, is some gold class shithousery :tearsofjoy:
